Extra scenes and such that I never saw originally. I know these movies are edited, but something like this, though maybe not as important in telling the story, keeping the flow, and moving it along, they have to do, but for the ones that want similarity with the books, some things should be in movies, one way or another for guys like me that compare the books to movie version. I know it's hard enough to do these with the critics out there, and no one will ever be satisfied.

Great trilogy for fans of this genre. Worth a look.

the perfect lead in to the Lord of the Ring trilogy

Be pleased to know you will not be disappointed to purchase the extended edtions of the Hobbit Trilogy. Even if you already own the originals you will enjoy these versions. The original Hobbit movie releases are long compared to most theatrical releases and were kept at these lengths for the average movie going market. These types of extended versions are rarely released for theaters and it is great for the fans who can watch them in the comfort of their homes. Fans will enjoy the extra character interaction and development. Since you can always stop and watch at any time, you will not need to take up an afternoon or evening to watch these versions. If you wish to take up the time you can still go for it anyway! Of course, the Blu-ray versions are wonderful to view as well.

The Hobbit Extended Trilogy is a must buy for any fan of The Lord Of The Rings series. I love longer cuts of movies some films it helps with plot issues others it makes longer films even longer. I never read The Hobbit or The Lord Of The Rings novels but from the comparison videos I saw on YouTube it’s says the movies more or less follow the novels more or less. I enjoyed The Hobbit Trilogy the only complaint I have is the cgi wasn’t as good as L.O.T.R’s trilogy and some fan favorite characters died.

I'm a big fan of the Peter Jackson Middle Earth adaptations but the original releases of the Hobbit movies felt flat to me which was really disappointing as the actual book is one of my favorite adventure stories of all time. I felt the "extra" took away from the experience. That being said, the extra "extra" in the directors editions seems to have added some cohesion and made it more fulfilling rather than the awkwardness I felt with the shorter versions. It's still kind of goofy compared to the serious nature of LOTR but that's natural to the story itself. Picture and sound is fantastic and I love Martin Freeman as Bilbo! Great casting.

Having enjoyed Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Edition on DVD, the quality of the Hobbit Extended on Blu Ray is spectacular. The films themselves are enjoyable, action-packed, and are successful, despite some new material generated to enhance the plot for a film (does differ from the excellent Hobbit children's book from my youth, but still worth watching). However, the last film did have a lot of violence and gore that was unnecessary (even detracting from the film), which was never necessary in the original films. The extended scenes were very good additions to the films though, watching those extra minutes in a full-length marathon. Now onto the director's commentary version!

I'll make this quick as most people either have seen these movies or can watch better reviews. The extended additions of these movies are not a super drastic change but it does flesh out some stories and character arcs to the point that the added scenes made a noticeable difference. It's the same movies you either loved or hated but it is better than the theatrical cuts for sure. If your going to buy these movies, this is the version to get.

Product wise, this is a fantastic price point for all three extended editions of the Hobbit movies. If you already know you enjoy them, definitely pick this up. The quality of the Blu-Rays are amazing. As for the movies themselves, I'm torn. They raise a lot more questions than they answer with how they adjusted the story to include the Silmarillion. But the most glaring flaw is how much is constantly happening, even in the extended editions. Unlike the original trilogy of movies, which the action held weight and the extended edition was very slowly paced, the Hobbit movies are ALL info-dump and action ALL the time. There are no breaks in-between important scenes, which in my personal opinion made me care hardly at all about anything important that happened because I never had a chance to let anything set in for the 4 hour runtime per movie. Overall, I would recommend watching them, but I don't know if I would recommend the extended editions. I am curious what they could have possibly cut out of the theatrical version since the entire trilogy is endless "high-stakes". If you want the extended editions, definitely get this pack. If you want to just see the movies to say you saw them, I have to say go with the theatrical versions.
