Better than the first "Hunger Games" movie

"Catching Fire" is to "the Hunger Games" what "the Empire Strikes Back" was to "Star Wars" — in other words, the sequel that's even better than the blockbuster original. Anchored by the awesomely talented Jennifer Lawrence and featuring a wonderful ensemble cast including Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz and Donald Sutherland, the movie features wonderful acting, spectacular sets, a well-paced story, and a cliffhanger ending (faithful to the book). My only gripe is that the high definition film sometimes reveals the tricks of the special effects department (particularly obvious is the scene at the President's Party, where's it obvious that the stars were digitally "dropped in" to the scene filmed with all the extras. But to me it's a minor gripe, the movie still deserves a full five stars. The steel box packaging is very nice but not in itself particularly essential.

My wife is a huge fan of this book series and I must say I have been thoroughly pleased with both the first and now second of the films. Usually when Hollywood adapts a book to the big screen they butcher it in order to make a fast buck, however, my wife has stated numerous times how the films have been faithful to the books as best as she has ever seen. Having not read the books I can say from a film only perspective that the plot and setting of the films truly grip you from the beginning. One can relate to the plight of the districts while being amazed at the carnage of the games themselves as portrayed by the cast and the filmmakers eye. Subtle musical cues and extravagant color schemes bring this tale to life and if HD is your thing, this film will not disappoint. I find, from a movie aspect, very little to be negative on other than the fact that when the film is over, you long for more.

So many of this type of movie focus on youth. However, this particular movie/story is able to bring in not only youth, but older "veterans" into the story line as the Hunger Games brings in previous "winners" to combat each other rather than selecting new faces from each of the districts. As a result, some of the combatants realize the un-justness of this particular Hunger Game and are quickly teaming up, not necessarily to win, but to provide a better chance for Katniss to come out on top as she is the first one to really show compassion to others and how terrible these games really are, thus providing fuel to the rebellion that is slowly gaining momentum in the districts. There are many good supporting actors in the story line. I am eager to see the future movies...Hey! I might even decide to read the books!

I've been waiting for this to come out on Blu-ray for a while. So once it came out it was to no surprise that I picked it up on the first day. I found myself debating over the best buy exclusive casing or the blu-ray and dvd combo pack. I ultimately decided on the best buy exclusive casing being that DVDs are starting to become obsolete and plus the casing just look cool. Why not have something in a good case that going to be limited? If you haven't seen the movie yet its pretty good. I recommend seeing the first one before viewing this one in order to gain a better sense of what is going on; that is unless you read the book. The video quality is what you expect from a blu-ray and the extras are well... the extras. I'm not the one who typically get into the extras too much. So what are you waiting, make the plunge and take it home.

I did not read the books The Hunger Games series is based on, but I did watch the first film and was interested enough to buy the Steelbook edition from Best Buy of the second film in the series, Catching Fire. Like many "middle" films (Empire Strikes Back, notably), there is a darker tone from the outset which is well-represented in the lighting. The effects are really awesome, especially on my plasma. Anyway, if you are a fan of the series, this is certainly a worthwhile continuation. I can't speak to how it works as an adaptation, but I'm enjoying what the cast and crew have produced thus far. Jennifer Lawrence does a great job making you feel her desperation at times. And as for the item itself, the Steelbook edition, all I can say is the Steelbooks are pretty cool and I hope there will be more in the future.

The Hunger Games is one of my favorite book series and Catching Fire is my favorite book in the series. This film lived up to my very high expectations. Jennifer Lawrence is a powerhouse as Katniss, and Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson both stand out as Peeta and Haymitch, respectively. Everyone in the cast has wonderful chemistry; the plot was exciting and heartwrenching and made for a movie can be watched multiple times. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and the ending will have you wishing the next one was in theaters already! The blu-ray had an exclusive making of documentary that was very cool to watch, and also had deleted scenes which I am always glad to see included. This version includes a blu-ray, dvd and digital copy, and it was well worth the price I paid!

In this world, there was an uprising by the 13 Districts of Panem, a totalitarian nation which exists in place of North American nations. Why that is, I don't know. After District 13 was wiped out, the Capitol forced a surrender, and the Hunger Games were created to punish the Districts, who were then forced to offer up one male and female between ages 12-18 to fight to the death until only one was left. For the first time, there were two winners: Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), and Peeta has major feelings for Katniss, whose heart may or may not belong to him. She has become a symbol of hope and rebellion in Panem, causing big problems for the Capitol. President Snow (Donald Sutherland) knows he can't simply kill her, so he announces the Quarter Quell, in which only past victors can be sent into the Games. The biggest problem I had with the first movie is the soundtrack. It's about teenagers trying to kill each other. You'd think that it would sound more exciting, but it wasn't. Still, Jennifer Lawrence is enough of a reason to watch. The story is told in a more bold fashion this time.

As a family, we read this book series (3 of them) and enjoyed it for the action, but it is really about so much more. It is another way (entertainment venue) to show people all over the world that human beings will never put up with tyranny and will always strive to break free of it, as if history is not enough proof..it is always really good when a movie so well made like the Hunger Games series comes to life to "speak" to those who are suffering under a tyrannical government entity. Lord of the Rings is another great movie that speaks to so many issues of when darkness and evil rise to power but how it can always be defeated! It's a good lesson to young people to perservere and always be determined to be free!

I bought the BluRay/ DVD/Digital download of this movie, and when I tried to download the digital copy it kept giving me an error message. So, I contacted the service dept that it directed me to and they sent me an email saying that they would look into it and that it may take 1-2 days to resolve. Well, at day 3, after hearing nothing back from them I emailed them asking if they were able to rectify the problem. They responded that they were working on it and they would let me know when it is resolved. It's going on a week now and I still did not hear anything from them! What are the odds that they rectify this and I actually get what I paid for...a digital download of this movie? Probably Nil :(((((((((

The Hunger Games was a great first movie in this planned 4 movie series. In keeping with the tradition established by The Empire Strikes Back, this second film in the series goes well above and beyond the first. Everything about this movie is bigger and better than its predecessor. Its clear the the budget was upped for this chapter after the success of the first movie. As far as the plot, Catching Fire stays fairly close to the book, though purists will note lines of dialog that were spoken by one character in the book said by someone else in the movie, plot omissions, etc. Just like any book to film adaptation. Otherwise, an amazing film. Here's hoping movies three and four hold up as well!

I saw the original movie for the heck of it and thought it was all right. If anything, the success of the movie called for a continuation of the adaptations. And it also put Jennifer Lawrence on the map as she did this around the time of another surprise hit: X-Men First Class. Ever since then, she's gotten a bigger list of performances, but had a chance to return to this. The plot brings some new twists along, expands the characters a bit, and shows more of the machinations that occur in such a society. In short, the movie is setting us up for Mockingjay which will be the climax of the series and show us what happens when rules get changed or broken and people get pushed too far.

I really really enjoyed the Hunger Games Trilogy. I have read all the books at least 5 times. When the first movie came out, I was disappointed in how much stuff I felt was important didn't get translated from book to movie. This time I feel they did a much better job of getting in the stuff that mattered the most. The only thing that does continue to annoy me are missing characters. There are characters in the book that may not be big characters, but they made you see the importance of the main characters. Regardless, for Catching Fire, I was very happy with the direction the new director took and look forward to the next two movies representing the third book.

Just As Good As the First One

An entertaining, meatier sequel detailing the lives of Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and how the lives they are promised to have after surviving the "Hunger Games" quickly turns dour after the Capitol goes back on their word and instead focuses on taking over their lives and not leaving them be. This includes having them potentially involved somehow in the upcoming "Hunger Games". The beginning of the film is a flat-out nasty slice of satire on reality TV and how enamored the public is with the medium of television, especially when it involves a love story. The film is a little long for my liking, but the direction it takes in its final ten minutes is exciting and not expected at all given the situation these characters are thrown into. The acting is top-notch (especially Phillip Seymour Hoffman in one of his final roles), the art direction is simply amazing, and the story remains interesting and avoids being repetitive based on how it concludes. Overall, very watchable, and perhaps better than the first film.

I *love* this movie! I've read all the books in the Hunger Games trilogy and Catching Fire was always my favorite. And the movie absolutely delivered! Everything about it was so great. It was a wonderful continuation of the story. The only thing I was a little disappointed about was the bonus features. There were a couple of deleted scenes, which were interesting. But ultimately I felt like it was lacking. The Hunger Games had much better bonus features what with the interviews with the cast and everything. That was something I was looking forward to with it, and to get a behind-the-scenes look at how it was made. But such a small gripe for a fantastic movie.

I read the first book, and thought, this is pretty good, I think it's great that the movies have really tried to capture the book visually in such a memorable way. They've really sold this franchise, I don't think people will easily forget about these movies. I don't want to give away the plot in the review for those who haven't seen it, and also I'm sure tons of reviewers already have. I like how so many have rated this and the stars are still so full. I got my copy on black friday, so I got it for a decent price. It's packaged well, pretty appealing and has a decent amount of special features. I can't wait for the next installments.

i may be biased because i enjoy anthology-type/fantasy-type stories, but i thoroughly enjoyed this film. jennifer lawrence is, of course, amazing at anything she does, and hutcherson and hemsworth are two of the most beautiful boys ever (again, i'm biased). i thought i was going to end up hating jena malone because she was such a little brat in stepmom, but i appreciate her more now after seeing this. the sets and cinematography are as beautiful as the first...in my opinion really capturing the essence of a supposed post-apocolyptic, futuristic world. anyone who enjoys these types of stories would be satisfied with this purchase.

We need to talk about two things: the movie itself, and the presentation. The movie is awesome, even if you are not a fan of the Hunger Games series. It deals with very hot issues, and it is an excellent derivative of the dystopian sci-fi genre that peaked on the 1970s. The use of CGI perfectly applies to this movie, and the depiction of the future world is very nice. All in all, acting, directing and photography are well balanced and yield a really cool result. Regarding the home-video presentation, the steelbook makes it stand from regular movies, and the presentation is well elaborate and nicely presented.
