I thoroughly enjoyed part 1 of Mockingjay. It gives a little more insight into how Katniss thinks and why she does the things she does.

I really enjoy the series, and this is a nice movie. Too bad that it is only part 1 instead of "finishing." But I would recommend.

My final thoughts are more reserved for when the series ends. My wife has read the books and says this stays mostly true while hitting the high notes. At first I thought extending the trilogy to 4 movies was a money grab, but indeed my wife assured me that there is a lot going on in the 3rd book and the pacing is appropriate. At some point I felt as though the movie was settling into almost a TV show style cliffhangers - but who can blame Hollywood for copying TV these days (at least TV is doing it right lately). Jennifer Lawrence does a good job of playing the everyman - and does a convincing job of the insincerity we all might experience during the commercial shoot. I felt that was the most humanizing part of the movie for me. Outside that she goes back to her super hero feel though. Also - anyone really ever try to shoot an arrow at an aircraft? At the speeds and altitude involved I found that unbelievable. At this point, the plotlines start to become a bit more predictable, and the twist at the end of the movie was spoiled for me by my wife's synopsis given to be back when the first movie was released (spoilers don't bother me). The films quality is outstanding. Audio is great as well. I would expect both to be from a recent Blu-ray release though. The packaging is amazing, and blends well with the steelbooks of previous releases. Now hurry up and get the last movie out!

As an inadvertent fan of this series (I've never read the books and got hooked by the polish and pizazz of Gary Ross's first installment), I find myself both impressed and annoyed by this very competent Part One of the finale. Impressed because the acting, the effects, the production design and direction (by Francis Lawrence, who's handled all the sequels in the series) are first rate. The cast, headed by Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson, et al, bring a credible humanity to what is otherwise a pretty preposterous scenario. What annoys me is the the fact that this is a "Part One." This is just a naked grab at more box office, in the same way that the concluding chapter of "Harry Potter" was a grab. The material here doesn't warrant "Epic" handling. This should have been a trilogy, over and done with in three parts, not four. Still, I will fork over my money to see Part Two when it appears in theaters and add the Blu ray to my collection when it is released. I just will do it begrudgingly--kind of like Katniss who didn't like being used by the powers-that-be.

Hollywood in its corporate wisdom(??) decided to split Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy into a quartet. Okay, understandable since it worked for Twilight--why not?? But, one fatal miscalculation the assumption that all viewers either have seen the previous films or read the novels.Without such be advised that Mockingjay simply begins minus any prologue to update for those who came late to the party. That said Jennifer Lawrence & Company are in fine form continuing this tale of uprising. Returning are Philip Seymour Hoffman( sadly reminding what a loss of talent ),Woody Harrleson ,Elizabeth Banks & Donald Sutherland as President Snow--who as most politicians who allow power to delude them overplay their hand.Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss having survived two series of the games is reluctant to serve as the rebel symbol the Mockingjay. But Snow's public abuse of her friend ,Peeta leave her no option. Joining the cast as President Coin, who may have her own agenda, is Oscar winner Juilianne Moore. On to Mockingjay--Part Two!!!

This is the 3rd movie in a series of 4 "Hunger Games" films. Like many (most?) movie series based on Book Trilogies, the studio has turned the final book into 2 Movies - the better to fill the story out. And, of course, to provide greater earnings.... Better half has read the books, and thoroughly enjoys the movies. As an "outsider" (not having read the books), I have also found the movies enjoyable, although in a Big Loud Dumb Popcorn Flick way. But then, am NOT a member of the "Target Audience," for either the books OR the films. As a Blu-ray, this makes a pleasant viewing experience, with sufficient action to show off a Home Theater. The DVD and UV formats provide flexibility, and there seems to be a nice selection of Extras. Fans of the series should be pleased. Others may want to wait until it shows up on Your Favorite Streaming outlet. (Ticking "Yes" on "Recommend" as the Technical Quality of the Blu-ray seems fine. But don't really know any friends who follow the series - although wife might!)
