Jackie Gleason and Paul Newman in this pool hall classic

As I expected, I enjoyed this movie, which I'd heard about ... but never seen ... for more than fifty years. The growth of Newman's character as the film progresses elevates the spirit of the viewer. There is one particular scene wherein Newman's and Piper Laurie's characters talk about the feeling that a person can get from doing those things that they love and that challenge them to do their best. The cast is just great, with George C. Scott and the amazing Jackie Gleason equalling Newman's performance. Those who enjoy Gleason's work should make a point of seeing "Soldier in the Rain" with Gleason, Steve McQueen, and Tuesday Weld.

Bolstered by a quartet of simply amazing performances (Newman, Laurie, Gleason, Scott), this is an acting tour de force the likes of which must have amazed 1961 audiences. The film's achievement is so shattering that the depth, nuance and power of those performances seems hardly diminished by the intervening years. Though The Hustler is undeniably seedy, it's a gritty, grimy look at desperate characters trying to carve out a piece of their own twisted version of the American Dream. It's sad, it's compelling and it is completely and utterly unforgettable. This Blu-ray package contains an excellent video presentation and special features. The audio presentation is very good but not quite perfect but probably the best it's ever going to be.

It's hard to beat classic films. It really is. Paul Newman shines in this wonderful movie. He was and will always be one of the best to ever do it. His cool, charisma spills effortlessly off of the screen, making this film effortlessly watchable.

The Hustler with Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason was really enjoyable to watch after all these years. The quality and sound of the DVD was excellent. It was in black and white and what a treat to see it the way it was originally filmed. There were so many other actors in the movie that went on to do other notable works.

This is supposed to be a classic movie. The pool games were interesting but the rest of the movie was rather boring. As usual Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason were great.

Paul Newman. Not much more is needed :) This is one of his earlier roles quickly showing his starring capacity. The film is closely based on the book and keeps the viewer's attention throughout telling the loosely quite possibly based on true events. Apparently the real Fats was known in various cities by that city's name and his surname "Fats"; however the author never really indicated this was a true story...cleverly avoiding royalty fees. :) Also features a top-notch performance by George C. Scott. Jackie Gleason also rock solid.

I have not had a chance to watch yet, another notch filled in for my personal collection. Looking forward to watching along with hundreds of other dvds I bought as I liked to movie and the price was too good to pass up.

We've been picking up bargain Blu-Rays waiting for 4K content and find that Best Buy has a great inventory, well organized and absolutely priced. Seriously, a classic like the Hustler for what we paid was a great deal-we're not finding inventory and in stock position like this anywhere else.

Robert Rossen carefully directs this film with as much care one can muster. There's not a boring moment within the picture involving the characters but the pacing is occasional difficult for my ADD tendencies. The cast is incredible, as to be expected with these names: Newman, Scott, Gleason and so forth.

Paul Newman illustrates the art of the hustle in this movie. Personally, I enjoyed the sequel The Color of Money better.

I liked very much this movie because it look very realistic with nice acting of the 60s. Some people found it boring but I think was much better than a lot of contemporary movies which get their credits from visual effects.

Classic vintage era bad boy movie! Phenomenal cinematography and locations. Over the top acting and posturing. You will not leave your seat! If you do make sure you pause the movie because you don't want to miss a moment!

If you love film, you have to own this movie! Newman and Gleason are electric and will have you glued to your screen as you watch this amazing story unfold. Don't forget to pick up the sequel, The Color of Money, as well. Another excellent movie.

I love old movies so thought this would be a good one to try out for $5 and add to my Old Hollywood collection. It felt just long, until the end. Decent movie. I'd recommend to certain friends, not all.

One of Newman's finest performances as Fast Eddie and an all star supporting cast with Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats, George C. Scott and Piper Laurie. It's a gritty, sophisticated and thoroughly gripping film about shooting Pool.

This is a older movie that I had previously seen, but my wife had not and I was delighted when I was able to purchase it from BestBuy at a good price so my wife and I can watch it anytime we want.

This movie has always been a classic..I also enjoy Paul Newman & Jackie Gleason. Now it can be seen so one can really enjoy it more with crisper sound and sharper picture! Thank Goodness for Blu-Ray & Movie Preservationists!
