In a sea (my big book of puns was handy) of bad shark movies, this one works. This sort of plot you understand even before buying the DVD, if not... Just off-shore, a great white shark strands a girl on a rock. Simple. Most horror films are simple. What makes or breaks them is execution and this one is well executed. The setting and filmography are first rate - this is a beautifully shot film. The special effects are terrific and the shark looks very real. The acting is solid as Blake Lively convinces as the film's hero. The villain (shark), again looks real, and is presented as the lurking terror that would scare anyone. The pace is steady and effective as the stakes continue to rise throughout. This is a Hollywood monster movie so yes, the shark does a few things that are skeptically farfetched: knocks a whale twenty feet, catches on fire, bites through metal, and pursues a lone surfer like a vengeful stalker in a Lifetime movie. Most of those things I could also attribute to Jaws - so let's take it easy, lighten up, and not forget that we're watching a monster movie. While this is not Jaws, this film contains enough to deliver what it should. A decent grab-the-popcorn, let's-take-scary-ride-and-be-entertained, what-if story.

    4K UHD Blu-Ray review

This review is for the UHD (Ultra HD) Blu-Ray version of The Shallows - Review was done on a 2016 LG OLED 4K TV using an Oppo UDP-203 Ultra HD player I won't go much into the movie details but will say that the movie itself was very enjoyable. With limited Ultra HD titles available, I've found myself buying some great looking movies.. even if the movie isn't that good. This movie was a great mix. The movie comes in a 2-disc set: Disc 1 is the 4K version of the movie (requires an Ultra HD Blu-Ray player), disc 2 is the 1080p Blu-Ray version of the movie with the extras. The movie is in 2.39:1 ratio (black bars on the top/bottom) and has Dolby Atmos audio for those with an Atmos receiver. The movie itself looked great. Being a mix of shot in 4K and 2K, with the effects mastered in 2K.. I was surprised with how great it looked. Being an outdoor movie, it really shows off the great location they shot it in. Grain/noise was relatively low throughout while the HDR really made the beach/water pop. Definitely a "demo disc" to show off the 4K quality while also being a very enjoyable movie. One of the top 10 titles I've viewed so far, right up there with The Revenant and some others. Highly recommended for anyone with a 4KTV and 4K UHD Blu Ray Player!

Solid Entry into the Survival Genre

The current trend in films toward the single actor survival genre as produced many great films. Gravity, the Revenant, The Martian, all focus largely on a single actor as they struggle with an overwhelming situation. The Shallows is another entry into this genre and is also very well done by in large. These types of films give an actor a great deal of screen time, and thus a great deal of time to well, act. Blake Lively does a fine job demonstrating the agony of not only her physical wounds but also of being so close to salvation. The shark as a villain as opposed to a force of nature is interesting. Although I think the studio anthropomorphized the shark a little bit for effect. While a shark may attempt to defend a whale carcass from competition, it does spend an inordinate time pursuing the humans. A dead whale would draw sharks from far and wide, and the shark would likely have to return to the carcass to defend it from other predators. That wouldn't make for much of a movie however, so the shark pursues the humans with something akin to a human grudge. While perhaps not an accurate representation of shark behavior, it does make for a thrilling movie! One that perhaps isn't as good as the very best in this genre, but a solid entry non the less.

Well, I bought this film when it finally reached my $9.99 or below benchmark for films that I have reached the, "I have no idea why it was made" category. A girl stuck on a rock (or Buoy) with a rabid shark circling.......... Hmm, how on earth could this even remotely be interesting and relevant in today's reality? So I did what I said and waited until Bestbuy dropped it to $9.99 or less (and it was only for a week I think?) regardless. Bought it. Got home and went into the 165" home Theater! Surprisingly I wasn't bored and enjoyed the film. It felt grounded. Loved some of the shots and there are great scenes. They didn't go crazy with the intensity build ups. Nothing of the sort. From beginning to end I expected an over the top Jaws experience, yet walked away with a solid feeling that I had watch an interesting story about surviving a tuff situation. I liked it!

After Credits you are met with spectacular cinematography of waves slurping against a pleasant isolated beach with wind-blown palms in the background, serine pan shots of waves and the water’s-action - all accompanied by a sound-track that is nothing short of brilliant and superbly filmed shots of spectacular surfboarding that’s out of this world. The film had a very wide range of visual and special effects along with heavily choreographed scenes – it can be easily said that there was a steady flow action or some kind of visual movement throughout the entire film. Blake was stupendous as solo, and she carried the show to an exceptionally high entertainment level – she is a remarkable actress.

If you are looking for a movie with GREAT ocean HDR which really pops, look no further. The scenes in this movie, especially the aerial shots are like WOW! Unfortunately the really isn't much of a story. If you took away the director trying to give all the great aerial shots this story could be told in a much shorter time. Unlike those books you read that are reduced to a point people generally complain too much is left out, in my opinion this movie was intentionally was dragged out. So its not for everyone. Now with that being said, I going to recommend this version because if you are reading this as a 4K review and you are looking for visually stunning 4K HDR then you will love this movie.

I was sold on this movie based on the plot. I've heard people complain that the plot was bit thin and boring based on the fact that the setting pretty much stays the same throughout the entire movie. As a fan of Open Water and its sequel, I thought that a movie could be thrilling without all the tricks. Unfortunately, I was wrong. The acting was slightly below the average, the plot was incredibly thin, and the special effects were laughable. I was very disappointed. Luckily, I got this movie on sale. Now I know why.

Nancy comes empty-handed, except for her surfboard and smartphone. The latter serves two purposes: to deliver bare-bones exposition and to cross-promote parent company Sony’s latest high-tech gizmo — a reminder that most modern-day horror movies can be “solved” simply by calling the police. The Shallows" is a one-woman show that puts Lively on a jagged rocky pedestal and worships her. She wears a bikini so radiantly orange that seems to refract moonlight during the night scenes,

We ordered the blu-ray disk online and it arrived but did not work on our blu=ray player. We took it to the Palmdale Store. We went to customer service and they happily exchanged our disk for another, which we took home and found it also did not work. We used a disk cleaner and blue out any dust and tried again. It worked. Final verdict. Ordering online was easy. It arrived promptly. The store was cooperative with us exchanging it. We are satisfied with the purchase. Also, the movie is good but not for the squeamish. :D

While no "Jaws," this movie about a battle of survival between a stranded female surfer and a voracious great white shark is entertaining and suspenseful at key moments. The movie is less about realism and more for suspense and entertainment. It accomplishes that and holds its own as a movie worth seeing... for the right price. The blu ray has a few "making of " special features that are interesting and not overly long. If you enjoy the ocean, surfing, or sharks, give this one a try... you might be pleasantly surprised for 90 minutes.

I initially saw this in theaters after reading positive reviews. That this was as much about the character and her survival as it was about the actual attack. It's not particularly realistic, but it did make me believe it. And once that happened, the tension it creates was very entertaining. This is not the goofy sharknado, or megashark. Nor is it Jaws, really. While it is about a shark attack, it takes a less adventury, more gritty, survival story tone. It felt like The Grey, to me. So if you enjoyed that movie, you'll likely enjoy the Shallows, as well.

The graphics for this movie are amazing in 4k! I was honestly extremely hesitant to buy this movie because I thought it would probably just be another shark movie that is halfway decent but I was nicely surprised on how good this movie is. Blake Lively was hot and did well acting. The reason why I didn't rate the movie 5 stars is because I thought that there could have been some more interesting twists or turns that occurred to keep me glued to the TV but overall I give it 4 stars.

This is a really great movie! When it was in theatres, I saw it twice--once with my date and once with my family. Bought the DVD pretty much the day it came out. Not a lot of unnecessary "fluff" getting to the main plot, and the cast is minimal, which I think is a good thing. The movie gets right into the action of things and in my opinion, is pretty reasonable with the normal shark--not uber intelligent or meat hungry like "Deep Blue Sea" and "Jaws (both good movies as well).

Jaws made more of an impact to me than The Shallows. I don't like going into the ocean to this day. I even tried to jump out the back of the tram at Universal Studios when Jaws and I came face to face on the ride when I was 7 years old. The Shallows was recommended to me to watch. If you want to watch shark movies, I'd recommend Jaws and the Jaws series of movies (Jaws 1-4). However, Jaws 4 reminds me of Orca. I prefer Orca versus Jaws 4 (The Revenge); though.

When buying this I had the usual expectations of Shark flicks...So, it sat on my shelf for a bit. However, after seeing the reviews, it caught my interest and I decided to try it out with my better half. Basically, hold onto your seat, or leg...because, this one is going to be a tense ride. For sure this will sit on the top of my recomend list. That said, this is a reminder for me again about ocean waters and how I will not feel comfortable again for some time......

I got this movie at a discount, around $22. It was definitely worth the price. It looks amazing on 4k. Up there with the best of the movies released so far on 4k, as far as the video and audio quality are concerned. As for the movie itself, pretty solid. Wouldn't make my top ten list of the year if the video and audio improvements of UHD weren't a factor, but for people buying 4k movies I would put it in the top 10 of the releases available on 4K right now.

This is one of the best looking 4k movies I own. It was originally shot in 3k and finished in 2k. But the uhd does show improvement over the bluray, which already looks great. The majority of the movie takes places in daylight and will be one of the brighter looking movies you'll own. Lots of beautiful shots on the beach and a great suspense movie overall. As a jaws fan I wasn't expecting much when I saw this movie but I gave it a chance and I liked it a lot.

This movie is great for fans of horror movies or shark movies. Blake Lively does a great acting job and she is not hard on the eyes either. Yes there are moments where the CGI shark looks like CGI, but that is limited. Yes there are parts where you scratch your head and say that sharks don't act that way, but you know that going into the movie. That's what makes it exilerating. In Jaws, you know the shark stalks the people. The same is true in this movie.

to get back in the water. Oh, sorry, that's the other one. How many more good Shark movies can they make? Answer... at least one more. Always loved JAWS, this one managed to come up with several new ideas which worked. The story itself was helped along by the beautiful scenery and the even more beautiful Blake Lively. If you dig this kind of flick, you won't be disappointed. Blu-ray technical details are strong and should please everyone.
