    A great family TV movie!

Take this taped live without a studio audience tv movie for what it is. A well done adaptation of a world famous classic movie. In all reality it copies the Broadway version rather than the film. Done with some veterans but also many young actors who did a very nice job for the most part. My granddaughter, who lives with me, asks me every evening when I get home from work, 'can we watch The Sound of Music?" We've watched it at least 20 times. Of course, being a huge fan of Carrie Underwood, I have a hard time finding fault with her role. I think everything she attempts, she succeeds. If you are a purist, perhaps you should watch the original film version. But, if you want a nice, entertaining, fun, enjoyable family movie then this will do just fine.

Far Superior to Peter Pan Live

I didn't absolutely love The Sound of Music Live, but I definitely wanted to support NBC's attempts at family friendly programming and add this DVD to my collection. And I think hindsight shows that, though there were some mistakes, The Sound of Music Live was far superior to the overly long, somewhat campy, unfamiliar, and just downright bizarre (in some spots) Peter Pan Live. Regardless of differing tastes for under $5 everybody should have this in their collection--it was definitely worth the price; I wish the soundtrack was included because I would have definitely been willing to pay more. I knocked it down a star because the case is a bit flimsy, there's no slip cover, and the cover art isn't very descriptive. For example, you wouldn't know it until you popped in the disc, but this DVD version of The Sound of Music Live does feature the 45 minute making of documentary.

A good version of the stageplay

A lot of people compared this to the 1965 film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. This is not that film. If that were released today it would be a top of the line production values and release in IMAX and filmed on location. This was filmed in a studio in New York State and the production crew did an excellent job. Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer were excellent in the lead roles and I was very impressed by Audra MacDonald as the Mother Abbess. The scenes with Maria and the Children are engaging. I loved all the musical numbers they were in. And what can I say about Audra MacDonald's Climb Ev'ry Mountain? Whereas in the film Robert Wise filmed the scene with space and with light. The producers of the TV event filmed it as a (my words) 'Come to Jesus, I have seen the light event' All in all, I am impressed. I can't wait until the next stageplay release by NBC/Universial.

If you go into this LOVING the original and already upset they've made a remake, you're not going to like it. I enjoyed watching it just to see what they did and how the could present it live. I thought it was done very cleverly. The acting isn't very good, but it is an interesting presentation and I don't feel I wasted my time in watching it.

Sound of Music Live is a wonderful musical rendition of the beloved musical The Sound of Music. Carrie Underwood does a fantastic job with the musical numbers, though her acting is a bit underwhelming. The rest of the cast is first rate and the singing by the children is very good.

Yes, Carrie Underwood is not a great actress, but she can sing well as can the rest of the cast. A great companion piece to the Julie Andrews movie version. Fascinating to compare and contrast the two versions. And the fact that it was performed "live" is quite remarkable.

The staging and songs were great but the recordings seemed less full than the movie version. They were still very good, but no doubt the difference from a 30 piece stage orchestra and a 1,000 piece (I exaggerate) movie soundtrack can be heard.

My wife's birthday is less than two weeks before Christmas, so she gets a lot of presents during the last month of the year. And the Carrie Underwood "Sound of Music" was one of her birthday gifts this year. I got a great price for it at Best Buy on Black Friday. My sweetie is a Carrie Underwood fan and a Sound of Music fan,and it turned out to be a great gift for her. The live version of the Sound of Music was an entertaining presentation of a good musical.

For a live tv production this is a good version of the classic. Carey Underwood is very good. Julie Andrews is well, Julie Andrews. Hard to compare the two stars. We enjoyed it

Although the original with Julie Andrews is still the best, Carrie Underwood and the rest of the cast do a nice job on the re-make. I enjoyed the movie.

I was a big fan of the Julie Andrews version but this does a great job at coming close in a more up to date fashion. Carrie underwood was great.

Yes, the performances are a little wooden, but it does not take away from the lovely music that is the experience of the Sound of Music.

I loved watching this on NBC and I can't wait to watch it again! I thought Carrie Underwood did a wonderful job playing Maria. I love the Sound of Music and this is a good version with modern artists. NBC has started a new holiday tradition I can't wait to see continue.
