Season 1 was fascinating and suspenseful, back when the main characters were not exactly sure about what was happening to the world around them. There was some mystery involved. Much of the impending horror of what could happen next was left to the viewers' own imagination, which is what made it worthwhile.
Unfortunately as time passed, the writers decided to ramp up this good vampire-bad vampire undercurrent/ backstory that is not necessary, and plays as silly as a Saturday Night Live skit.
