John Carpenter's The Thing - 4K Steelbook

Although this edition doesn't include all the goodies (including the TV broadcast cut) that Scream's 3 disc Limited Edition Steelbook (from a 4K scan), nor Scream's 2K Collector's Edition (sans TV version), finally getting "The Thing" in 4K steelbook is well worth the money. No complaints with the picture quality, in fact the film has never looked better, and the DTS 5.1 audio is clean and crisp.
Extras include the Carpenter and Russell commentary, the documentary "John Carpenter's The Thing: Terror Takes Shape, outtakes and theatrical trailer, which are on previous releases, as well as a 4K digital copy.
I've been noticing that steelbooks are offered up as preorders for only a few days and then go to "Coming Soon" status only then to become "Unavailable." I got lucky and found a store that had one copy after it's initial release date and was able to snatch it up as I forgot to preorder a copy within the short window that it was offered.

This is it. My favorite movie of all time, finally on 4K. I've owned it on practically every format. A movie that had me hooked from the first time I saw it as a teenager back in 1982 when it was first released. To me, it is John Carpenter's best film.
The 4K transfer is astounding. This truly is the best I have ever this film look. Even after seeing this movie so many times I immediately started seeing detail that I have never noticed before. The vivid colors, clothing, and landscape. Everything just pops. The sound is excellent too. There is a noticeably improved bass response and fairly active surrounds. My only gripe. If you are able to, you have to adjust the left and right front channels to maximum output on your receiver to even notice the separation. Once you do that, everything is beautiful. I've said enough here. Just go get it

This is the rare of example of a remake that blows its predecessor out of the water (or the ice, in this case).

The Thing Collector's Edition had been available on Blu-ray online, but I was having difficulty finding it in any retail stores. Then I checked with my local Best Buy and they had it. I was very excited. It's great that Best Buy is carrying stock of the Shout! Factory titles because they are truly excellent releases, and The Thing is no exception. It includes a beautiful slipcover with reversible art of the original Drew Struzan artwork. There are two Blu-ray discs in this package, one of which is strictly for the bonus features. This release is loaded with extras. There are new interviews and retrospectives. There is a 30-minute interview with John Carpenter, discussing the making of the film. Then there is an hour-long feature on the men of the outpost in the film. They each discuss their characters and the real-life experience of filming the movie in the cold. Kurt Russel is absent, but practically everyone else is here, including Wilford Brimley. Plus, there are more. And you get several commentaries. I do believe the old Universal commentary is on here as well. Thanks to BB for carrying it and having it at a great price; it was less than Amazon.

John Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi/horror classic makes its long-awaited debut in 4K UltraHD with this solid release from Universal Home Video. The picture looks fantastic and the sound is decent (it seems to be missing a bit of the "oomph" present on recent blu-ray releases from Shout Factory).
The extras, however, are a bit on the lacking side. There is a great audio commentary track with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell and the 84-minute documentary "The Thing: Terror Takes Shape" is also included along with a trailer and a few outtakes.
What is lacking, and this is probably because Universal didn't have the rights for them- are a ton of extras that were included in the blu-ray editions from Shout Factory. If you're a hardcore fan of the film, you probably already have a Shout edition of the blu on your shelf that makes a nice companion piece to the new Universal UHD. But if this is your one and only edition, at the very least you have the best transfer of the film on the market and two solid supplements.
Overall, this is a solid release and comes highly recommended.

The Thing (also known as John Carpenter's The Thing) is a 1982 American science-fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter, written by Bill Lancaster, and starring Kurt Russell. The film's title refers to its primary antagonist: a parasitic extraterrestrial lifeform that assimilates other organisms and in turn imitates them. The Thing infiltrates an Antarctic research station, taking the appearance of the researchers that it absorbs, and paranoia develops within the group.
The film is based on John W. Campbell, Jr.'s novella Who Goes There?, which was more loosely adapted by Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby as the 1951 film The Thing from Another World. Carpenter considers The Thing to be the first part of his Apocalypse Trilogy, followed by Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness. Although the films are narratively unrelated, each features a potentially apocalyptic scenario; should "The Thing" ever reach civilization, it would be only a matter of time before it consumes all life on Earth. Carpenter acknowledged that the work of H.P. Lovecraft also inspired the film.
