The movie is slow paced. So be prepared. Don't let the title fool you. This isn't an action flick by any means. The acting and the cinematography are top notch.

There Will Be Blood is the most gripping, risky, and thoroughly enthralling film I've seen in years. YEARS. It has renewed my faith in the true spirit of American cinema--the experimental, artistic magic of film making. No matter who you are or what your tastes may be, if you are willing to lose yourself in a fantastic story of bold characters and conflicting ideologies, then you will not be disappointed. PLOT: At first glance, a century-old tale of a ruthless oil baron doing whatever he can to make his millions might not seem like a rousing film. However, the conflicts are so intense and deeply rooted, escalating and escalating until the shocking conclusion, that the film transcends casual viewing--it becomes an experience. CHARACTERS: It's well-known by now..Daniel Day-Lewis is mesmerizing as the greedy and powerful Daniel Plainview. He commands your attention in each and every scene, creating the most memorable portrait of a tragic protagonist since Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson. People have criticized him with overacting in this role, but that term is thrown around so casually that it has lost its meaning. There is a difference between playing a bold and imposing character and overacting. Overacting is going overboard when the situation does not require it. Not once did I see Day-Lewis going overboard and losing hold of the character. Daniel Plainview was always there, in all his intricate nuance. Paul Dano broke through any preconceptions I ever held over him as the equally forceful and ambitious Eli Sunday. Given Dano's history of supporting roles, I never would have thought he would be able to stand up to the acting caliber of Day-Lewis (especially in this role) but he went blow-for-blow through the entire film. EXTRAS: There are a few deleted scenes and a nice making-of featurette. There is also a great silent film on the history of the oil business through the 1920s. Part of me would have loved to have a commentary track, but knowing Paul Thomas Anderson's hatred for doing commentaries, I was not expecting it. Plus, I think the movie should speak for itself in this case. So, if you like your movies with deep subtext and curious ambiguity, playing out like a classic novel on film, then this is definitely for you. It is a film that you can actually discuss with your friends and interpret in your own way, instead of having an "it was cool when..." conversation. Not to mention that the score from Jonny Greenwood is fantastically eerie yet directly on target. I will never forget seeing this film in theaters and sitting with my mouth open through the credit sequence. I could not shake this film's effect on me for days after viewing it, and hopefully it will do the same thing to everyone else. I could never recommend it enough. Enjoy the experience.

P.T. Anderson is destined to be the next Stanley Kubrick. He has a way with film, even if it is inspired by some of the greatest directors of all time, he still has it. Every great artist found inspiration from another great artist, it's the cycle of humanity. This is an absolute masterpiece, what a magical film this is. The score makes you feel uneasy throughout. I loved it. It looks fabulous on Blu-ray and sounds just as good and let's face it, the dvd packaging is an automatic DVD shredder. Get the blu ray if you've got the equiptment. I liked the idea of the DVD packaging but my DVD is scratched within two views after taking it out of the cardboard case, it is a really tight squeeze; pulling it automatically scratches it.

**** of **** This movie is simply outstanding in ever respect.Ranging from the performances to the direction to the story etc... The movie is basically a character study of Daniel Plainview ( played to perfection by Daniel Day-Lewis), a devilishly competitive oil man solely in the business for himself. Once settled in the town he encounters a local preacher named Eli Sunday played terrifically by Paul Dano. Plainview detects a furtiveness lurking in Sunday which induces only hate in Plainview. This movie is not for the weak and weary because it pushes you around, it throws you from scene to scene. It is a dark film and rightly so. You will no get bored by it's length which is only 2:38 min. Most of all it is a compelling, stimulating, and mesmerizing piece of art. If you embrace this film I promise you will not be dissapointed.ENJOY In a review I prefer not to disect every aspect or detail in a movie but merely enough to give the reader a feel of the texture of the film. Often revealing too much can damage one's viewing of the film.
