Large touch screen, stand alone video recording

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Lifelong photographer since 1970's, dabbled in video from VHS camcorders to 8mm tape to hard drive based recording. Though I have bought gimbals for my Nikon DLSR's and Samsung smartphones, I do not always need the quality of DLSR video, and I do not like using the smartphone on a gimbal at events since it is hard to answer texts and make calls unless I remove it from the gimbal which requires rebalancing when putting back into the gimbal, and of course runs down the smartphone battery when shooting video. . I bought the Thinkware Snap-G to record simple family events like birthdays, holidays, a day at the pool or beach, where extreme zooming is not required (can use my 4K camcorder for grandkids sports, etc.) yet have steady video in a compact form-factor. I purchased a cold-shoe "arm" which screws into the bottom of the Snap-G which allows me to attach small rechargeable lights as well as shoe mounted mics, and I bought a 3.5mm external mic. As with photography where filters and lighting accessories make photos stand apart from those taken by most people, I have learned that videography also requires accessories. . Pros: -Separate stand alone video recording (phone APP NOT required), no need to run smartphone down shooting video. -Removeable batteries allows carrying spares. -Protective cover for SD card and charging port (other brands leave these exposed). -Large 2 inch touch screen. -The zoom works in regular and selfie mode (helps eliminate the fisheye distortion in both modes). . Cons: -A bit too wide-angle with distortion, must slightly zoom in to 1.0 or edit in post processing (would be nice if 1.0 could be saved as default starting zoom). -3.5mm audio jack is a bit too close to the base of the screen, affecting mic selection choices. There are many YouTube videos explaining functions of the Snap-G as well as covering gimbal techniques. 25JAN2023
