    Shock & Awe...

Huge (ok, gigantic) VH fan since '78 and have seen them multiple times, but was very leery of this live offering - would rather new material, and let's be honest, Dave's voice is struggling. All that said, wow, this is a killer performance and captures the "live" feel incredibly well. Great song selection, and the band sounds simply, sonically incredible! Ed is THE master, but kudos go to everyone. Haven't cared about a live album since Springsteen's last, but this is just a blast! Enjoy the pounding party and overlook Dave's vocal shortcomings.

I love this cd and I love this band. I caught my first VH concert in 79 and saw every show in ever version except VH3, even followed Roth's solo stuff. The musicality of this disc is outstanding, it's just like the shows I heard and it's great to hear some songs they rarely played at the shows I saw - Romeo delight and hear about it later. I agree some of the lyrical issues are just Dave being Dave but I just don't remember it ever being this bad. It seems like he has forgotten all the lyrics or more likely just doesn't care but it really is mostly just Dave talking his way through it. In typical frontman "look what I can do fashion," he likes to show off that he has learned some Japanese for the show and thanks his instructor on three separate instances. It gets a little distracting but hey it was a show in Japan ! I think when you look at this recording and what was shown on jimmy kimmel you can see that any singing ability is just gone.

I had been a fan since Women and Children First, which mean I am in the over 50 demographic. This is real fun and rocking Van Halen. People complain about DLR voice. Hey, he is getting old and can't jump and sing like in 1978 without catching a breath, but he is doing a really good job for his age. And most of all, it looks like he is having fun and the best time of his life with the boys.... well sans Mad Anthony. It looks like it is family business now and DLR is an adopted VH. Next time they need to record with a headset mic instead of having DLR running up and down with the mic. Personally, I love it!

Essentially a Roth-era greatest hits live album... I applaud Edward Van Halen for deciding to not re-touch/enhance the overall performance, but it's in Roth's vocals where the tragedy lies. Roth's best days are far behind him, and it shows; forgotten lyrics and a voice in decline are all you can expect. This upcoming concert tour will be a carbon copy of the 2010 & 2012 tours; I will not be going...

this is a tricky one to review. I think you have to cut VH a little bit of slack because they're (obviously) past their peak here but if you know anything about LIVE VH (regardless of time period) you know that they are raw and improvisational when they play live, especially DLR's vocals. Casual fans will think this album sounds crummy but lifers know better. If you want to hear the songs as originally intended, listen to the original recordings. But if you can appreciate the high wire act that is VH LIVE, then you're in for a treat.

    Van Halen Live Worth It!

The powerful band that is VH displays great musicianship on this live collection of the best known David Lee Roth era selections! Eddie's guitar work is still as stellar as ever (check-out Eruption!) and Wolfgang's bass work shows how much he studied the material to seamlessly step into the role vacated by Michael Anthony. David's vocals are understandably different (more mature perhaps?) than they sound on the originals from years ago, but that being said, this is a great set and his interaction with the audience shows how he still can own a room! Those of us who have admired VH's work since that first LP (look it up, kids!) will appreciate this live recording for quite some time! A good recording insofar as sound and mix, and a great snapshot of what they sound like live.

This double live album is the first one with David Lee Roth. The first live one was with Hagar was very good. Live in Tokyo Dome is good. Roth is still a great showman and sings all the songs I wanted to hear. The band plays well and Eddie Van Halen delivers all the riffs and has not lost a step. I suggest that any fan should buy this CD to fill out their collection.

The first Live Van Halen record with David Lee Roth. I wish they had released a Live album with Diamond Dave nearer to the beginning of their career. Time has taken it's toll on Dave's voice. The reason why I'm giving this record 4 stars, is Edward Van Halen. The guitar playing is outstanding, as one would expect. This recording is well worth it just to hear Eddie.

What you want from a live CD

This is what you want from a live release, warts and all. Does DLR sound great? Not necessarily, but it's not as bad as you may have heard. He's never been a great live singer, and quite frankly a live release from the band thirty years ago would likely sound like this. All in all, the music is solid and worth cranking up. A must buy if you're a VH fan.

Live albums usually have the same appeal as greatest hits records, being they highlight a bands most popular songs. However, unlike greatest hits records that are meant for people that just want the songs they've heard on the radio this record will only appeal to people who LOVE Van Halen. After listening to this record it becomes clear why the band never released a live album with David Lee Roth until now - simply put - he sounds horrible live. So why give it 3 stars if DLR is that band ? Eddie !!!. Eddie saves this record from being a laughable mess. So for the guitar lovers out there, you're gonna tune DLR out and you'll enjoy this record. For the people that love the VH songs they hear on the radio - steer clear.

Wow! Better than I expected! The first two concerts that I saw were the Fair Warning and Diver Down tours. In a word - amazing! Was psyched when I found out that Van Halen (not Van Hagar) was finally releasing a live CD. Was hoping that it was going to be OK as these were not the same young hooligans that I saw in the early '80's. When I saw the set list for the CD, I was excited......... when I heard the CD, I was blown away! Was so shocked in regards to how good it was! the music was powerful and Roth's voice was not as bad as I thought that it was going to be. Would have loved something recorded live in the late '70's / early '80's, but this is what I wanted in my collection for so long!

The playing and sound of this live album is amazing. Great set list, which includes some lesser known rippers like "Romeo Delight". The only song I skipped was "Me & You [Drum Solo]". Alex is a great drummer, but he's playing along to backing music that, at times, overshadows the drum solo. Overall, highly recommended.

Great concert, 2cds worth of all David Lee Roth era songs warts and all. There are no overdubs supposedly and I can certainly detect some mistakes but thats what adds to the charm of this cd. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Was nice to hear a live album from VH. Roth's vocals were not as bad as many reviews said. Nice to hear the rare tracks that you don't normally hear in concert. Overall, a good addition to my VH library.

I just had to pick this up to add to my collection. While it is not perfect. It is not terrible. If you get over the negativity of the changes and such it is just an addition to a great group of records.

I bought this CD because I am a big Van Halen fan, especially of the DLR era. I am also going to see them live this summer and this is the album they are touring under. The mixing for this live recording is really good as well as the playing. The only downside is some of the vocals are kind of rough; but the truth is David Lee Roth hasn't ever sounded just like the studio albums live. Probably because he is always running around being the entertainer that he is.

Yes, it's live and yes, this is how Dave sounds in the live setting now. That does not bug me. The band sounds tight for the most part. I could do without some of Eddie's extra noodling in many of the songs, but that's probably just my disgust with him not wanting Mikey in the band getting in the way. This live album proves that in 07/08, they used Mikey's background vocals in the live setting. Here? You can tell it's Ed and Wolf trying to sing background. Key word is trying. I'll rate it average, but honestly, I prefer some of the bootleg shows I have from either '81 or '83.

Van Halen's first live cd with David Lee Roth! 25 songs spanning all of Diamond Dave's recordings with the band. No overdubs and the band is on fire! Hopefully the band can get back in the studio soon.

Good sounding cd. Van Halen fan for a long time. No overdubs of the live performance. DLR can't hit the high notes like he once could but overall a fun and enjoyable listen. Set list is fantastic!

This is a great CD if you can mix out the vocals. Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang are on point but Dave is just not Dave. Perhaps age has caught up with Roth but his vocals just don't cut it anymore.
