A great game for the educated gamer.

When I first heard about a Ghost Recon game on the 3DS, I was sold. When I found out that it was a turn-based strategy game, I was slightly less sold. In truth, this is hardly a Ghost Recon game. Although it features a Tom Clancy-esque political plot, the dialog, cutscenes and political fallout are all undermined by some ridiculous notion that this game should be "dumbed down" for younger audiences. Frankly, the game suffers from this. After a little while, I stopped paying attention to the boring, watered-down plot. What did keep me going was the gameplay. There's absolutely nothing exciting about it. Once you acquire all of the characters (something like 5 missions in), the upgrades you acquire are mostly combat modifiers and hardly change the gameplay. Often times, the game is far too easy, even on the Elite difficulty setting. Other times, the game is simply unfair. I'm absolutely fine with losing because I made a stupid move (thankfully the game's obscure save feature helps deal with those instances), however, sometimes the game adds a third faction of characters that you need to rescue from an attack but they are not under your control and seem to have some sort of death wish. If you save often enough (but not too often), you'll be spared the frustration of having to restart the mission over and over again. The game does make some unfair objectives at some points that, unless you had foreknowledge of them, you likely wouldn't have split your squad up at an opportune time. Still, once you get the hang of the gameplay mechanics, I found the strategy to be fairly engaging and there are some fist-pumping victory moments to be had and they totally reward you for the frustration. It's important to note that this is in no way an action game and hardcore Tom Clancy fans will likely find nothing but disappointment here, not that the more recent Clancy games haven't been fairly watered-down. If you're looking for a fun turned-based strategy game that's easy to pick up and put away like a good portable game should be.

Has crashing issues, would avoid first batch

I'm sure most people have heard of some of the crashing issues involving the 3DS, but I think there's a specific issue with this game and not the system. Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver and all the other built in apps work fine for me. This one, however, crashes for me on a regular basis. It seems to be related to going in or out of range of a wireless router that I'm connected to. If wireless is turned off, it seems like it's fine, but this is obviously not an ideal solution. Your mileage may vary. I was convinced there was something wrong with my system, but after some extended time with other games and not running into any issues I'm positive it's the game itself. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that an Ubisoft game isn't working properly---this has served to be a valuable reminder to me as to why I stopped supporting them in the first place. I'm also not surprised that people are buying this under the assumption that it's an action game---Ubisoft was purposely vague with the description on the box. The screenshots imply that it's an RPG of some sort, but I wasn't sure if it was real-time or turn-based or what---there's no details whatsoever. For what it's worth, when the game works it's pretty awesome. It's kind of like Advance Wars mixed with X-COM, Fallout Tactics, or Jagged Alliance. My only gripe is that the story is just awful and the character portraits are pretty bad too. It's a launch title and it shows. I'm not really sure why this is branded as a Tom Clancy game either, it's completely unrealistic (from a gear/story perspective) and the story seems like it's from an old GI Joe cartoon. TL;DR version: wait 4-5 months and grab a later manufacturing run at what'll probably be half the price too.

    A true hidden gem.

A true hidden gem. This game has addicting game play. The game's missions are all fun and very challenging. Though the story is very generic and only form of multiplayer is 1-on-1 pass n' play, the game play and amount of content make up for its shortcomings. Even after you complete the main campaign there are still many skirmish challenges waiting for you.

    Great strategy game

If you're a fan of the turn-based strategy genre, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is definitely worth your consideration. It's great to have this kind of experience, which is easy to play with lots of depth, on a portable system (especially my XL). Each one of your characters is unique and has an impact on your overall strategy. Gameplay wise, the game is solid. My only complaints are its throwaway story and sloppy writing. There is 3D in the game, but its not utilized very well, but that's not really a deal breaker.

If you are a Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, or especially an XCOM fan give this one a look. Very long and can get repetitive after awhile but is very deep and engaging.

    Crashes randomly

Greetings. Pass this one right by. I was lured in by the Clancy name and previous successful titles, but this one is a mistake. It crashes randomly, which is unacceptable, especially when each mission can take an hour.

    Turn-Based Shooter...

I was skeptical buying this game on release day for the 3DS, but the GameStop associate talked me into it. Bad idea. Within 5 minutes of gameplay I was bored with it. The game consists (based on the part I played, which I'm assuming is how the game runs throughout) of a grid of squares in which you select a character, select a square to move him/her to, and then select an enemy to hit. Sure, there are weapons to choose from, but it only changes the amount of damage, not the gameplay. The game goes completely against how the Tom Clancy series was meant to be played and turns it into a tedious, and boring turn based game.
