Customers are saying
Customers praise the VIA 1515M 5" GPS for its ease of use, accurate GPS navigation, and lifetime map updates. Many appreciate the screen size and find the device to be a good value for the price. While some users noted that the battery life could be improved and the volume could be higher, the positive feedback on navigation and features outweighs these minor drawbacks.

Great Product
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was using a Garmin Nuvi 42Lm. But I would get turned around so much in Minneapolis or Chicago when you need clearly spoken directions and map directions which were so confusing and all I would see is the red arrow changing when I missed the lane or ramp. I got the Garmin because I was told by a couple friends they loved them, and we forgot to bring our GPS when my stepsons flight was canceled because of bad weather in Green Bay. So we drove him to Chicago, so I had an excuse to buy a Garmin. Well my first ever was a Magellan but no life time maps so I bought a TomTom on sale but also noticed the price even though cheap was still no life time maps. As the years went on life time maps were getting common, and cheaper. Well we loved the Magellan so I got one with lifetime maps. Nice but was unable to update maps and one thing Magellan offered in these two models that I owned was a freeway only travel. Which at night in northern Wisconsin is so dangerous in the fall with deer running around that I just won't travel state hi-ways at night even if it takes longer to use the freeway. Well lets get to my new VIA 1515M. I have never seen a GPS that made me feel more at ease. I don't see a lot of screen clutter like I did with the Garmin and the night screen is not bright like the Magellan. But what makes this GPS so less stressful is that in hectic heavy and fast traffic. This screen has the little bit of clutter on the bottom not on the sides narrowing the vision like on the Garmin. So I see clearly and don't half to strain. TomTom uses a huge yellow arrow over your red route road (not pink like Garmin) to let you know this is your turn and two miles out it will tell you that your turn is coming. When the voice begins to tell you you need to turn you better be turning because you have lots of traffic merging into your ramp also. This GPS is like a breath of fresh air compared to the other two brands the screen is so much better than both. The spoken instructions are also much clearer. The night vision is also much better than the other two also. Only one thing that would make this even better is if they had a freeway only option. Other than that the wife say's no more GPS'ssss. But she admits this is the best we ever had. Since I know and my wife the way home we just shut the machine down. But we do travel to the big cities a couple times per year and I always hated using the Garmin now I fell much better no more sweaty palms. We both laughed when we pulled off for gas and it would show a huge yellow arrow that we should turn around. All I can say is that of the three major brands I own is that I can highly recommend the TomTom VIA 1515M. Oh by the way I got it as cheap as on Amazon at Best Buy plus no shipping. $99.00 Great Xmas present if your puzzled what to get someone.

Used to be a good GPS!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'd heard that stand-alone GPS manufacturers were losing money to things like GoogleMaps, and certainly from my experience that appears to be true... The firmware does not appear to have been updated for about 5 years - 5 years ago, the UI was impressive... but compared with today's mobile devices [which include things like multi-touch and highly-responsive screens - something TomTom does NOT have], the TomTom's UI now just seems clunky, slow and annoying! Granted, the lifetime maps and spoken street name are nice, but again things like that are pretty standard these days. Probably worth the money if you could get it for less than $50!

Not A Bad GPS, But Not My Favorite
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this Tom Tom VIA 1515M to replace my Garmin Nuvi that got fried when my multi-outlet device shorted. I went through two of these before I figured out that this device is sensitive to the spots in the ignition where you go from off to actually starting the engine. The device would only turn on about 2% of the time in auto power detect mode. I contacted Tom Tom and their only recommendation was to reset the device to it's factory defaults. My Garmins never had this issue, nor did the Sharp GPS that I had a few years back. It was with the second device that I noticed that it came on every time that I turned the key to the first stop (where the dash lights come on, but you don't proceed to the next step immediately). So, this is a bit frustrating when in a hurry to crank up the car, but it is also great because it gives pause when starting up the car. As for the operation, the audio is fine, except that the stop light camera warnings are a lot louder than the voice guidance. I love the split screen and the advance warnings it provides are much better at helping prevent me from missing a turn more than my previous devices. It has a nice screen size and provides most of the information that I am looking for. I have, however, not seen it give me any traffic warnings, even though it is programmed to do that. Not bad for the price. Purchased at another store.

Posted .Hi! The device does not turn on automatically if it doesn't receive enough power from the cable but you can always turn it on manually. Your device does not come with traffic updates but it is programmed to create your route based on historic traffic information, this means in your map share updates there's information of peak hours and recurrent traffic jams on major roads. We are really happy you are enjoying your device and that you like the screen size. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have further questions, we'll be happy to help. Cheers! -Sophia @ TomTom

Lifetime updates
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pay attention to those updates. Most of them force you to use a computer to update the device 1 every3 months or you lose the updates if you lapse. If you don't have a Windows PC, ie Linux, your screwed.

Posted .Hi and thank you for your feedback! Just wanted to clear up some misconceptions - We do require a computer (Mac or Windows PC - we don't support Linux) with an internet connection to update your VIA 1515M to the latest maps and software. You get up to 4 free map updates a year for the life of the product and there is no forced upgrade (choose to update or not!)
Hope that helps!

Website wrong description
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The website says this has traffic and weather updates and I cannot find that anywhere on this. If anybody knows where to find us please let me know. I also find interesting they never posted my first rating that I did after I bought this. Best buy has really had terrible customer service lately .

Love My TomTom
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm usually very good at directions, but when I got terribly lost, I decided it was time to get a GPS. The TomTom, that I bought at Best Buy is wonderful. I like how it operates just fine.

BEST GPS ever! Better than Garmin
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the best GPS ever, extremely simple and comfortable layout/display and its routes are best. I also have Garmin and its routes are not as accurate as Tomtom.

bad product, bad customer service
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.i can't believe this company is still in busines. i replaced my old garmin nuvi 750 with the tomtom VIA 1515M because it has lifetime maps. i took it out for a test drive and deliberately took 2 wrong turns. there is no message of "recalculating" when that happens and you can drive a half mile before another instruction is heard which gives no feedback that you are now off of your original route. the audio volume was also low, and i later found out that it was set to 70%; when i reset it to 100%, the audio was louder but in a noisy situation , say like windows open or downtown or radio on, it probably would have been too low. Tomtom's customer service reps all had foreign accents (I talked to 3) and 2 gave deceptive information and were hard to understand. the last one hung up on me when i told him i could not understand him and would he PLEASE repeat his last sentence. They were not well schooled on the products that they represent. I had to incur shipping charges to send it back. BTW, the display is not as bright and crisp as the old Garmin either.

Disappointing on key aspects - do not recommend
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Tried installing on Win8.1 Pro but not recognized. Tried several things to fix didn't work so checked their web site. Troubleshooting and registration pages on T/T site do not recognize device, VIA 1515M, based on s/n or model. Contacted support but first email response was incorrectly sent to me (wrong name and problem). How much else can go wrong?! If I was allowed to give '0' stars, I would.

Great GPS without traffic updates
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I originally purchased the Via 1515tm before this model was part of the deal of the day. This model does not have the live traffic update, which is fine with me. We purchased this GPS for our road trips. We do not use it everyday. Perhaps someone that uses it everyday may prefer the free traffic update option.

Impossible to connect to My tomtom
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had a Tomtom XL before and was fine with it. Now I bought this article yesterday. And is terrible because I can not connect to my computer, my computer is Windows 8. The Via 1515 GPS never appears connected to my Tomtom. It is a disaster. It took 24 hours trying and I can not connect to my tomtom. I will return it to the store today
