As many of you all know the first True Detective was a masterpiece guided by great casting and brilliant performances not to mention the talented Cary Joji Fukunaga at the helm. Season two left a lot to be desired and many wondered if series creator Nic Pizzolatto was turning out to be a one hit wonder for HBO. Season 3 takes us on a journey more familiar to the structure of season 1 but they are telling a much different story. Again the cast is wonderful, Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff make interesting partners and I enjoyed the chemistry between both actors. Carmen Ejogo is a revelation and ads a tremendous depth to the series in following a pattern of great women surrounded by less than kind men. The last shot of the series will always be on my mind as I think about True Detective Season 3.

Great second season of a great series. Glad it got back to more of its roots after season 2

You can tell a lot of love and care was put into this Season of the True Detective anthology series, especially after the divisive response the second season received. This time around, characters get a lot more time to breathe and the narrative plays out closer to how the first season approaches things with it's broken timeline approach. That said, there are two big flaws to this. One is that at times it seems to echo Season 1's writing a tad too much at times and the other is that the way the story wraps up was underwhelming to me personally even though the first seven (of eight) episodes in this season were all great. The conclusion makes sense, don't get me wrong, but by the time it plays out you might be left thinking "is that it?" like I was. Still, up until that point True Detective Season 3 is well worth the price of admission. Recommended if you were thrown off by Season 2 and want something more akin to the first.

Better than S2 almost as good as S1. If you like this show I would pick it up
