It's a bit restricted in its use as it needs to have a music source nearby. A better version would be something you can connect directly with to stream music to.

If you are going to spend a bunch of money on the Twinkly lights, you might as well buy this to have some extra fun. We hooked this up to our television and put on some holiday songs to watch the lights "dance". One day, my wife came in yelling at me for something, and she stopped once she saw the smart dongle was picking up her voice and busted up laughing.. it then picked up her laughing and the lights were mimicking the soundwaves . so, do you need this??? probably not.. but it's fun..

Easy to set up and use though

Music has to be loud for it to work properly. Comes with no wall power source only USB cord. Not all Music will play with lights, and you have to keep the app open for it to work continuously. Thinking of returning it. To many cons and not enough pros.

The Twinkly Music is a small microphone and its special technology allows it to connect to your wi-fi network (just as you connect your strings), capture the sound around it and sync it with your Twinkly lights.
It is a small USB stick, which you will have to power using the mode you prefer and which best suits your installation needs.
You say that it doesn't work when the app is closed, which makes us think there's some small problem to be solved, because if properly connected to your wi-fi network, it will work perfectly even when the Twinkly App is closed.
