Won't make cheap wine taste less cheap

What I liked: - Unique aerator - Device fits nicely into the mouth of my wine glass - Easy to store - Easy to clean What I don’t like: - The slow poor required to fill a single glass of wine - The taste of my wine The Üllo Wine Purifier is a rather unique product. It proports to aerate my wine, filter out those nasty, hangover heavy, sulfites that foul my wine. And restore my wine to its natural taste. I generally drink the cheap wine that you find at places like Walmart, Sam’s club, and my local supermarket. For this challenge, I chose Member’s Mark’s Black Point red wine blend. An obviously superior wine from Le Chateau Sams Club. The $10 vintage. The blend is good as far as cheap wine goes. I opened the bottle, took out four wine glasses, and started my taste tests. The first glass was my control glass. The wine was simply poured without filters or aerators. The second glass I used just the aerator portion of the Üllo. The aerator didn’t hinder the dispensing of the wine and it was fun watching the wine swirl through the aerator’s channels. The third glass I used one of the three special Sulfites filter provided in the box. The filter has an appearance like round ravioli which is right sized for the aerator. The outside layers appear to be material similar to a coffee filter. The inner core of the filter appears to be filled with a crystal-like substance. The pour this time was sleepy slow as the wine needed time to penetrate the filter. For the fourth glass, I chose to use a combination, generic aerator with a super market cheap coffee filter. And why not? The first glass tasted as expected; cheap but consistent in taste in line with prior experiences. The second glass had a slight more acidic taste to it. Not uncomfortable but noticeable. The third glass with the filter and aerator combination tasted just awful. And the fourth glass with the generic aerator and cheap coffee filter was…. Let’s just say there was no value to this combination. Now, to be fair, this product does proport to return a wine to its natural state. This includes freshly opened bottles and wine that has been exposed to the air for a while. In this case, it is entirely possible that my choice in wine was so bad that the natural state of the wine is worse than whatever Member’s Mark’s vineyard added to their blend to make it palatable. Now, to be completely fair, my experience is limited to a single bottle. Maybe it does work with more expensive wines that naturally taste better than the swill that has overtaken the American budget. Regardless, I do have two issues with this product. First, is there is no disclosure to the substance inside the filter that is supposedly the magic juju of this product. Second, the filters are not re-usable. Meaning, you must use a new filter after every 750ml bottle or four hours after first use; whichever comes first. This can add up quickly for a product that didn’t offer me much in return. I do like the aerator. Other aerators require me to hold them in mid-air over my glass. This one sits nicely in the glass allowing me to poor with greater control with both hands. I did have to wash out the aerator on my first use due to some foreign objects in the different aerator tunnels. This may be a quality control issue that needs to be addressed. Either way, be sure to rinse your aerator out before first use. The device does come with a holder so I don’t have to lay it on my counter. It also comes with a nice storage bag. The presentation of the product is nice as well. The box the product comes in looks fantastic. Just be careful when you remove the band holding the two sides of the box together. Gravity is enough to separate the bottom of the box from the top. Once you get into the box, you must hazard the finger sacrificial packing material before it will let up its prize. I believe the internal packing could use a revisit by the manufacture. Over all, my experience with this product was amusing but nothing that I’m taking seriously. At least not at my wine budget level. Hopefully, there are some reviews here form folks who used this product with quality wines and will offer a different experience.

My wife and I are wine drinkers and were skeptical at first. But after our first time use, the wine tasted the same (a good peace of mind knowing that it removed the sulfites). Overall, the packaging was easy to open and the instructions were clear but maybe step 5 to air or not air the filter was a bit confusing. We discarded the filter after 3 hours per the instructions and rinsed the gadget with warm water and soap. Now I plan to order more filters but the package comes with four filters.

I was rather skeptical going into using this product. I saw a few youtube videos but my first question is “how can filtering sulfates make that big of a difference?” Surprisingly, it works! The product comes in a nice box that feels rather premium. It comes with the unit itself, some directions, a cloth carrying case and four filters. Each filter can filter out one bottle of wine so for me this would last me about four months as I don’t drink that many bottles a year. The unit itself has a plastic base and a rubber top portion but feels high quality overall. It is easy to clean as you simply press the bottom part out with your thumbs and it pops out. I first used it with guests over a they thought it was rather cool and fancy looking. When filtering wine it comes through in a spiral through the unit which also aerates the wine. My first bottle was a cheaper bottle of Pinot Noir which I felt would be a good test case since you can very much taste each individual flavor in that wine. I am by no means a wine expert but it is a wine that is also pretty easy to taste the quality in. We did a test sip with unfiltered wine and we all made some silly faces upon drinking it. Next, we tried it with the filter and each person agreed it tasted better overall. The fruit flavor was more apparent and the wine did not have so much of a bitter taste to it. It also felt a little smoother. Overall it improved the wine, but you could still tell it was cheap. We also tried a more expensive bottle of the same type of wine. The before and after experiences were both much more enjoyable but the filtered version had more rich flavors and again, a smoother texture. I did not drink enough to warrant a hangover but supposedly this product can reduce the likelihood of getting one since people can have allergies to sulfates which can be a cause of the hangover. I am not a huge wine drinker but this product seems to actually work and it can improve all types of wines. I recommend it if you are a casual or avid drinker of wines. Keep in mind that you will need to buy filter packets down the road but this is not a big deal if you only drink 1-2 bottles a month.

I have tried this twice and both times I was headache-free. I have allergies to sulfites and always needed to take over-the-counter allergy pills if I had more than 2 glasses of wine. I don't believe they are needed anymore. I also don't like the idea of additives and believe in a more natural way of life and by taking out the sulfites from the wine, I believe I am living a more natural life by omitting another additive. Because I believe the filters themselves are a bit expensive, I am subtracting a star. As for the product itself, it is 5 stars because it works as stated.

I purchased this product on a deal of the day promotion. It was a great deal at a sale price mainly because with the purchase you also were to receive a 10 pack of extra filters. Because it was such a good deal I purchased 3 filters to give to family. However, Best Buy only provided me one 10 pack not three 10 packs. I tried to return and re purchase but the Best Buy would not let me repurchase and receive the filters. Very disappointed with the customer service.

    GOOD BYE WINE ACHES

When I first decided to get this product, I was skeptical. I can easily finish a bottle of wine, maybe two, by myself (go ahead, judge). Of course, during the drinking phase you dont care, but the results the day after... ugh. The Ullo is very easy to set up and use, so I wont get into that. Im a big fan of red wine and I used 2 Cabernet sauvignon and 1 Zinfandel as my test wines (the same wines I get headaches with). All three are moderately prices wines at about $20 between 2014 and 2016. Its one filter per bottle. and YES you must replace the filters. Ive seen reviews where people complain about having to replace the filter. ITS A FILTER. Just like a water, air, hepa... any type of filter needs to be replaced. So after dominating two bottles with the filters, I passed out. There was no significant change to taste, so the average drinker wont notice anything. So, I woke up the next day.. and wow wow wow wow. I was a little hung over, BUT NO HEADACHE. Hand to the God (in this case Dionysus), NO MORNING AFTER HEADACHE. So yes, this sulfite filter worked for me. I repeated this the next weekend with red wine (not a fan of whites). Same results. NO HEADACHE. Now, if you have a lower threshold to sulfites, this might not work. But for most people, it probably will. My only concern is the quality of the plastic where the wine aerates. It feels cheap and Im deathly afraid that a drop, which is inevitable, its going to break. Give this a try, Ive already recommended to my other friends.

It's super easy to clean and the display base is smooth and sleek. As far as performance, I tried 3 different tests on a white and a red wine: one without the purifier as a control, one with air setting and one without the air setting. Visually the purifier filtered out both wines beautifully. The filter worked amazingly on the white wine, making the taste less tart and smoother. The same cannot be said of the red wine, I tasted little to no difference. Maximum filtration can be made if double filtered which made the white wine taste even better. Sad to say there was no change in the red wine. One thing that worries me is the replacement of filters. They are only an online item, but I figure as long as you are aware of how many you have there should be no problem with running out. Conclusion: If you are a white wine drinker, this will definitely make a difference in clarity and taste. (Double filter for best results)

    Mixed Feelings

To start I'm not a big wine drinker, the occasional glass with dinner, mostly around the holidays or with Italian food. Since I received this product for an unbiased review, I brought my wife and next door neighbors in to help with this one. We started with a red blend, I poured each of them two small glasses one straight from the bottle and one through the Ullo filter with the aerator on, not telling which was which. One couldn't tell the difference, the other two both picked the filtered/aerated glass as better tasting, with one saying it didn't feel as heavy on the tongue. We repeated the process and had the the same results. We then changed to a Merlot and a new filter just to be safe. Again one couldn't tell the difference, this time one picked the unfiltered as tasting better and one picked the filtered/aerated as better. We repeated the process with the the one who couldn't tell the difference picking the filtered as better, the one who picked the unfiltered was undecided and the last picked the unfiltered as better. The flow of wine through the filter is definitely slower and takes a little patience. My wife often has headaches the day after an evening of red wine, but didn't the next day, so perhaps it made a difference there. I think this might be a good deal for someone who entertains frequently, drinks a bottle at a time, or just uses it as an aerator until they do entertain. For for my wife who usually has a glass of wine before bed, the concern is around the filter life and replacement. The instructions say the filter should be replaced after every bottle or three hours after the last use. If the filter truly losses effectiveness after three hours, we'd have to use a filter for every glass of wine, or use it just as an aerator and save the filters until the holidays when the family is all together and we go through a couple bottles with our dinner.

I have used filter/aerator devices previously and have found some to be just a fancy funnel. I was skeptical that this one would be any different. I was wrong. This is the best product for decanting/pouring wine I have found. Once you figure out how to assemble and use it, it is very easy to use. Take your time the liquid has to move through the filter for it to work. It is worth the wait. I tried before and after testing using the same bottle and there is definitely a taste difference. It seems to remove some of the after taste or tannin/tinny tastew you sometimes get with certain reds. I drink mostly red, have not tried it yet on whites, but I have friends that do, so I will be using it on those soon too. I also have to say that I honestly felt better in the morning after using this. I am not sure what the filter may have had to do with it, but I have seen other that have had the same experience. I can't explain it. Sulfite removal I guess? Anyway more than one reason to use it...Better taste and feel better in the morning!

To be honest, I was pretty skeptical that this would make any difference. After trying it, I can say that the wine seemed slightly smoother when run through the Ullo. Is it a night & day difference? No, but it is there. The main difference I noticed was I didn’t wake up the next morning with a headache. I definitely didn’t consume any less wine than I normally would have. In fact, I probably had more than normal (purely for testing purposes, of course…) so I can only attribute the lack of headache to the Ullo. Unfortunately, this headache-free evening comes at a slight cost. For starters, it takes a minute or two for the wine to filter into your glass. This isn’t a huge deal, but you will probably notice it more than you’d think. The second drawback is that the filters are only good for one bottle OR 3-4 hours, so don’t think you’ll be able to enjoy a glass one night, then reuse the filter the following night. I imagine keeping filters around could get a little pricey, depending on how often you enjoy a nice wine.

Cool and Easy to Use Wine Upgrader!

This thing is very simple and easy to use. It takes about 30 seconds to put a filter in and snap it back together. The wine comes through fairly quickly, about 5 to 10 seconds for 4 ounces. A taste test on a cheap bottle of a California pink moscato had the Ullo removing a bit of the tart bite and rubbing alcohol flavor/aroma common to inexpensive wines resulting in a lighter, smoother body to the wine. My question is, when the 4 supplied filters for filtering four 750ml bottles are gone, and you pay around 3 bucks each for the replacements...are you going to wonder if you should have gotten a more expensive bottle of wine. Bottom line though--the Ullo looks cool, seems well made and is very easy to use, and seemed to do it's job well. If the filters were less expensive I'd give it the 5th star.

A must have for a wine connoisseur

While I in no way consider myself to be a wine connoisseur, I definitely enjoy having a few glasses of wine on occasion, so I was intrigued to experience for myself how the Ullo Wine Purifier impacted wines filtered through this device. I was quite amazed at the noticeable difference between wine directly from the bottle vs wine filtered with Ullo. I tried the product on several different Red wines: two lower cost bottles (a Shiraz and a Merlot at roughly $10 apiece from the liquor store), a mid-price Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately $25), and a premium wine (purchased for $55). Without exception, the flavor and aroma of the wines was significantly enhanced by the Ullo filtration. Again, since I'm not an avid wine enthusiast, my verbiage may not be exact, but for me the wines straight from the bottle seemed discernably flatter, slightly more bitter with more of a heavier/licorice like finish than they did after being filtered with the Ullo, when for me they all seemed to have a much fuller flavor, seeming lighter and zestier with more of a caramel finish. I certainly enjoyed them more after using the Ullo purifier, so I definitely think the product delivers on its promises. The Ullo comes with 4 filters, with additional filters available on the Ullo website @ 6/$20 or 15/$40, so the per bottle filter cost gets down to under $3 with purchase of the larger pack. For me this cost seems fair for how much more I enjoyed the wine when compared with non-filtered wine. I do not have an aerator, so I can't speak to the difference between a wine that has been simply aerated and ones filtered through the Ullo's proprietary filtration pack, however I have no doubt that wine aficionados will be very pleased with this product and am happy to recommend it.

    Remove Sulfites with Ease

This product claims to offer better tasting wine by removing the sulfites that helps preserve wine. It is very simple to use and the design is good looking but feels very cheap for a product that is expensive. Looks and feel aside, the Ullo Wine Purifier does the job on wine bottles I've tried it with which ranged from $13 to $25. I only tried it on red wine with the aerator feature on as recommended by Ullo themselves and the wine did taste great. It made a difference but only slightly. I believe this product is subject to personal taste and for people that are sensitive to sulfites and want them removed. With that being said, my brother and mother felt it made a big difference in taste and they would rather drink purified wine with using Ullo than without it. Keep in mind that additional filters have to be purchased for this product since each one must be discarded after each use with one bottle of wine. Overall, Ullo gets the job done in a simple and quick fashion while transforming your wine into what it once was before sulfites were added. Furthermore, I would recommend this product solely on the basis that it transforms your wine into what it once was before preservatives were added. Yes I did only taste a slight difference but what may be slight to me could be big for you as it was for my brother and mother.

    Premium wine purifier

Basically, what this wine purifier does is it removes Sulfites and Sediment. This is a very well designed piece and it looks intuitive (read fancy) in shape. It works with both red and white wine and with expensive and less expensive wines. It definitely helps anyone who is allergic to sulfate. When you pour the wine, it takes few seconds for the filter to purify and fall into the wine glass. There is a huge difference in the taste with and without using this filter. I even had people taste test using this filter and they all were surprised to see the difference. Similar to a pot coffee system, this one comes with a filter. You use one filter for 1-2 bottle of wine within 3 hours of the first use of the filer. So it is good to order or keep extra filters when having a party or people over. There is also a Decanter if you want to use a multiple bottles of wine with a single filter. The purifier is very easy to maintain and clean and also dishwasher safe, although I hand washed it. Overall, this is a premium product I would recommend to anyone who is allergic to sulfites and would like to taste the difference in the wine taste. It can also be a very good gift item.

This little wonder takes some time off your wine wait for reds! No need to "let it breathe" if you use the Ullo. The device comes in a handsome, high end package. It has a soft-touch, quality feel, no flimsy plastic anywhere to be found. And it's super simple to use. You can use it per glass or on a decanter. I tried it both ways. Basically, the Ullo sits on the top of your glass (it fits perfectly, no matter the wine glass). You pour your wine directly into the Ullo, and it aerates the wine and filters out the sulfates as it makes it way to the container. Taste the wine right out of the bottle. Then run it through the Ullo. I'm no wine snob, but I'm a red blend/cab fan, and my unsophisticated palate readily could tell the difference!

The Ullo wine purifier is simple to operate. Just pop in the filter and set it on a wine glass and pour some wine in. We tried it on about 2 bottles and did not notice any hang over symptoms in the morning. The only complaint I have is that you can only pour a little wine at a time. Other than that it works.

I do like the way the wine tastes smoother, and the product was designed beautifully. It's really attractive. But the single use filters are extremely wasteful. In this day and age, it's hard for me to justify using single use anything. Also, there's the cost of buying replacement filters. So, yes, it makes the wine taste nice, but not enough to outweigh the downsides for me.

A gift from the Gods! I am allergic to sulfites, cannot take sulfa drugs. This product helps me drink wine without the side effects of migraines, stuffy nose, and blotchy flushed skin. The purifier takes the weird tinny taste out at the end of the sip. The taste of the wine is slightly compromised, but it is fine. You place the filter over your wine glass or you can order the decanter and filter the entire bottle at once. The price point for this product is very reasonable. I wonder if this works for hard liquor as well?
