Vanillaware makes great games. Unicorn Overlord has me wishing I was playing it while I'm at work, while I'm cooking dinner, while I'm playing with the dog, while I'm helping my kids, while I'm talking to my wife!
The story, music and gameplay is just excellent. The classes combined with items and then group management has you looking to try different ways to take on battles. Can't all be explained in a little user review. This is a really good game.

I took a chance on this game, despite not having liked JRPGs for year. Vanillaware is one of the most unique devs in the business. The gameplay has hooked me to the point that this is my game of the year, so far. The art is dope as always from Vanilla. Music is epic. And the gameplay... hoo boy. It is fast, intuitive, engaging and deep. I am mimaxing the heck out of 50 units right now and having a blast! 10 outta 10 game.

This is an excellent Strategy game with beautiful character designs and graphics.
A young prince escapes after a coup, leaving his Queen mother dead and his Kingdom usurped by a former ally. Now that new Empire is a threat to the world and a now grown Prince must confront it.
Battles are shown in a beautifully designed horizontal view but are played out automatically. You maneuver your characters on a map and pair characters to create more powerful units.
After you select your target, your characters move and the motions into battle play out like a real time strategy as you watch on the map until the characters meet and fight in a zoomed-in horizontal battle.
Story and voice work are great and there will be some trial and error to make sure you select the right units.
If you are looking for action, this might not be the game for you, but if you like setting up a strategy and watching it play out with beautifully designed characters, then this would be a great pick up.

fun game!! truly beautiful art and excellent character designs, as expected of vanillaware. interesting battle system, somewhat fire emblem-esque but definitely irs own thing. really enjoyed exploring the world and getting to know the huge cast! story was a little predictable, but still enjoyable. i hope vanillaware does some similar games in the future.

This game is great. Played on a PS5, the animation, music, and story all come together to formulate a fantastic tactical RPG experience. The battle and team building system are extremely fun to learn, and mastering them is very rewarding. Well done Vanillaware.

I was excited for Unicorn Overlord for two reasons. Firstly, I absolutely loved the studio's previous title, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, and secondly, it is very similar in tone to the Fire Emblem series, which I loved, but have not played in recent years since I never purchased a Nintendo Switch.
I did enjoy Unicorn Overlord a lot, though it falls short in a few areas. The story is terribly generic, though thankfully not bad enough for it to be a detriment. It's mostly that the story of a prince reclaiming his kingdom from evil has been done to death, and this game does not play with that trope at all. Considering Metaphor: ReFantazio came out around the same time and goes out of its way to flip the fantasy genre on its head, Unicorn's story came across as lame in comparison.
So, it comes down to the gameplay, which is fine. There are different classes that you can arrange and select abilities. There is a ton of depth to the way you can assign units together and rework their skills in battle, but the big issue is that oftentimes, it's easier just to grind up levels than it is to learn the ins and outs of the battle system.
Still, despite my complaints, and I had fun with it, even seeing the story to its conclusion. If you're a fan of this style of game, I can recommend it (though I would advise you play 13 Sentinels first, as I abolutely love that game).

As someone who has purchased every game Vanillaware has put out in the US and repurchased all their updated versions, this was an easy day one. Tactical RPGs normally aren't my thing, but it has that Vanillaware artstyle I love, a generally approachable gameplay style, and a lot of accessibility features that were nice even if I never used them. If you liked Ogre Battle or older Fire Emblems, definitely give this a shot.

Unicorn overlord brings a fresh new way of playing. You input your actions and then sit back and watch I'm your choices play out in stunning visuals. The story is set in fantasy and so far has me wanting to not put the controller down. If you are interested in turn based and or strategy RPGs, then do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Unicorn Overlord.

I went into Unicorn Overlord with few expectations but was blown away by how enjoyable the strategy elements of the game were. The core of the game lies with the unit building mechanics: you can build units of up to 5 members which each follow a routine that you create ahead of time. I had anticipated that the automated nature of the combat would be a bit boring, however I found it to be fun to try and optimize. Small tweaks can have huge impacts. If you fail to take out a particular unit or waste big attacks on units with low health, you may risk taking more loses yourself, and the swings from this may be huge.
The characters and story weren’t as interesting to me as prior Vanillaware games like Odin Sphere or 13 Sentinels, however they were passable. The main cast of characters is charming enough, and the voice work and designs are beautiful and well executed as to be expected from this studio.
Overall, I was surprised at how much more I enjoyed this game than I expected and would say that if you enjoyed the demo or are on the fence to try the game.

It may have one of the more bizarre names ever to grace a game but don't let that fool you! This game is a fully loaded strategy RPG with massive amounts of charm, story, and fun characters with which to wage war!

If your a fan of RPGs and/or tactical games then Unicorn Overlord is right for you. It's a ton of fun with lots of unique characters to collect. It reminds me a lot of the Fire Emblem franchise.

Excellent spiritual successor to Ogre Battle! I enjoyed my 55 playthrough on normal. The story is good, but the gameplay is phenomenal. I don't know if we'll get a sequel, but I'd love one!
