Was waiting to give this review after the update because i wanted to experience more of the game in fps boost. Still a great game to this day and the small but new little tidbits they added in the game have been even more appealing. This game deserves the title of a “remake” even though they last version was great too.

I LOVED the original Until Dawn, it pushed me to finally buy a PS4. I was excited for the remake, and for the most part it’s very good.
It now has 2 video modes (a cinematic wide screen mode that shows much more, and a 16:9 mode that is zoomed into full screen, showing less picture than the cinematic mode). Gameplay has both Fidelity and Performance modes, but the cinematics look like they are locked in to only 30FPS Fidelity. Either way, beautiful game.
This remake is littered with new scenes and “interactables” which make this game feel alot like the extended versions of the lord of the rings movies. Doesn’t necessarily need the additions, but if you loved the original then it’s fun to see the new additions.
My issues are with the actual performance of the game and the update to totems. The game can be a bit buggy, with the frame rate of some cutscenes and even gameplay getting a bit patchy. The new third person view is great, but sometimes the characters seem to get stuck when you try to make them walk, and other times it’s almost like there is a delay between you moving the controller to make them walk and characters actually starting to walk.
My biggest gripe though is with the totems. There is a new series of totems which includes new premonitions (very cool), but the remake requires you to locate a crack on each totem in order to actually see the premonitions. You have to turn and lower each totem until you find a glowing crack. It is ABSOLUTELY ANNOYING and honestly quite ridiculous considering all you had to do was pick up totems in the original game. I don’t know why they thought it was a good addition, but it definitely is not, it’s completely pointless.
Overall though, it’s a lot of fun to revisit Until Dawn with improved visuals and new scenes. But if you played the original, wait until it’s discounted a bit to buy it. Definitely worth playing, but maybe not for $60.

A Lack-Luster Remake

Now, Until Dawn was a terrific horror game when it first came out in 2015. Don't get me wrong. It was a really cool idea to make a game that basically functioned as a "Choose Your Own Adventure" title where you choices can shape the story and fates of the characters. It for sure increases the time you'll spend with the title to explore decisions you didn't make the first time around.
The story is also very well thought out. After a tragic opening, it's a slow burn as the mystery unravels. There's a lot more going on with mountain your characters are staying on than meets the eye and it's very cool to watch it all play out.
With what this PS5 remake gives you, it is absolutely NOT worth the $60. I bought it during a temporary sale and I'm still let down. Only if you haven't played the original would this version be worth it. I've outlined what I feel are the biggest pros and cons:
Pros:
-Obviously, graphics have improved. There's no longer any of the really uncanny valley facial expression moments. The characters also look way more roughed up as the game goes on.
-They did do a few nice changes to the opening prologue so you spend a little more time with it. I appreciate that the cast actually shows some remorse over the prank on their faces when they see how hurt Hannah is.
-The scene with Matt and Emily that you could only originally get as a pre-order bonus was added back in.
-The Wendigos look awesome.
-Josh can have a much nicer ending.
Cons:
-There's no options to brighten the game. It's so dark characters will react to scares you can't even see.
-The subtitles are unreliable and I'm shocked that hasn't been fixed yet. Sometimes they flicked on for a split second or not at all.
-Nerfing the prank can also be seen as a con as it does kind of cut down on the believability that Hannah would run out like that. The note no longer encourages Hannah to take off her shirt; she's shown as deciding to do that on her own.
-They removed that awesome "O Death" song for one that's sung so breathily I can't even understand what she's saying.
-Ashley's character was ruined; she's no longer secretly the worst out of the group. Her "Honesty" trait doesn't go down anymore if she tells Chris she's sorry about the prank and, if you chose to shoot her, she no longer very intentionally leaves Chris outside to die. She's shown experiencing the trauma from night so she freezes up and cries when the Wendigo gets him.
-The added scene at the end of the game with Sam is pretty lame.
So, as I said before, the changes make it so anyone who owns the PS4 release can pass on this remake or wait for the price to drastically drop. It's really too bad more effort wasn't put into this remake to give us more that's new to make it worth buying.

Regarding the game, I find it pretty spectacular! It intentionally changes some of the art design from the original game, creating a different vibe with its updated lighting. At several points in the game, it looks incredibly realistic. But it’s not without its drawbacks the frame rate is noticeably choppy at times and the anti-aliasing is a mess. There are a number of bugs as well, relatively unpolished despite its sophisticated presentation.
Regarding the package itself, the game arrived in pristine condition. It even had that new video game smell when I opened it! I did pre-order this item, however, so I expected it to come on its Friday release date. It didn’t come until Monday, which still isn’t so bad, but I set aside my weekend to play it and all that time was wasted.
Still, Best Buy is always a great option to buy physical games, especially because of the security of their return policy. I’ll just not pre-order next time.

Super scary game, bought after watching the movie that came out in 2025, and this game by far is better than the movie. It has a ton of jumpscares and is overall a great scary game!

An amazing psychological horror game! I never played the original so im glad i pulled the trigger on this one. You got to be on your toes throughout the entire game as one mistep could have massive consequences to one or all of your characters. Picked this up day one and glad i did. Its not a super long game so i would recommend playing through it multiple times as there is many endings you could get depending on your choices throughout the game. I believe 256 different variations? All around a 10/10 game for me and glad i finally got to experience it in beautiful unreal engine 5.

This remake is better not just in visuals than the original, but also improves upon the save system, chapter select, camera angles for all those collectibles and yes even the music.

Haven’t put this game down since the day that I bought it. From the jump the game got me hooked and is extremely fun to play… the possibilities of a jumpscare or a possible decision that could affect the outcome of the story is amazing.
