Excellent especially if you plan on getting the upcoming 2nd Part, The Mask of Truth. The story leaves off with a cliffhanger so playing the next game is essential to getting the whole story.
Utowaremono: Mask of Deception is a visual novel with Strategy RPG elements. The SRPG battles are sprinkled in every 30-60minutes but you can replay them when at the camp. They are a good break from the constant flow of the story, especially when playing for an extended period of time. The battles include two difficulties normal and hard for an extra challenge. The visual novel aspect is rather bare meaning there are no choices that affect the story outcome, but the battles and voice acting make up for the lack of choice. Despite that, the story is well done. The occasional innuendo or erotic scene may upset some but they aren't too frequent.
If you don't mind the lack of choice in a visual novel, I'd highly recommend this.

This game is a typical ATLUS JRPG. Lots and lots of reading carachter diolog but the storyline is really great so he reading doesn't seem to bad. I have been playing for about 8 hours now and have read for the majority of the time and have only had 3 actual battles where you can control you carachters and fight. I hope there will be more fighting and carachter leveling later on but so far it is a great game. I.E. for people that don't mind reading or if your child is a slow reader then I would also get this game for them to practice reading while not being to bored

If you set the dialog to auto-play and listen to all the (Japanese) voice acting, it's easy to go hours without actually hitting a button. Like the original (never sold in the US), it's a very story heavy game --- essentially a visual novel with bits of tactical rpg, slowly increasing in frequency until the game's end.
While a relatively small part of the game, the rpg parts are well fleshed out. That said, it isn't too hard (even on hard mode) and you can rewind to any point in a battle without repercussion. Once a battle is complete, you can replay it at any point to grind.
I only have two major complaints.
1) PS4 share is completely disabled after a certain point in the story --- mid-cutscene, not even halfway through,
2) Unlike the original, the story is not self-contained. While the length is fine, it feels like this is barely half of the plot.

I adore strategy games. I had never seen or heard of the anime, but the strategy aspect of the game's battles pulled me in. The story is deep and interesting, and the characters are developed enough that you care what happens to them. The PS4 is quickly becoming this gaming generation's JRPG powerhouse like the PS3 and PS2 were before it. IF you like strategy games, visual novels, or both, Utawarerumono is for you!

Great Visual Novel/Strategy Game

Decent is simplistic strategy game but main draw is the characters and the world. If you don't like visual novels and reading a lot for character and world building than this isn't for you. This is where a lot of the charm of the game comes from. The mystery of the situation your in and how the characters within it play off each other is the main draw. You don't need to have played the original Utawarerumono as the story is more self contained with a few cameos from the original game. Do realize that this game like the more recent Legend of Heroes trilogies that this games ends in a semi-cliff hanger where things are partially settled but clearly somethings just about to set off again. If you love Leaf/Aquaplus made games it's wonderful that we're actually getting releases in English now.

First, let it be known that this is a visual novel, only occasionally broken up by a straight forward SRPG battle system. It can be several hours between battles at some points. This isn't a dig at the game at all, that's just what it is. If this doesn't turn you off, and you're looking for an interesting and emotional story, then this is probably for you. The art and music were top notch, and I thought the story was great. It's a pretty powerful ending, which leaves a few threads open for the next game to address. Can't wait to play the Mask of Truth.

If you are a fan of visual novels (Stein's Gate, Code Realize) then you will enjoy this game. It is a long immersive story that fans of the genre will definitely enjoy. Not a lot of gameplay in a 30+ hour story, so you really have to be a fan of visual novels to enjoy this game. I am, so I did. :)

I played this on the Vita prior and the PS4 version is much of the same, but with the gorgeous artwork displayed at a better resolution. You can't go wrong with this version.

Happened to run across this and decided to give it a try. As far as a RPG/tactical RPG it's ok. Seems like they spent a lot of time on the storyline which is ok but not enough time to develop the actual gameplay. Unless you really love all kinds of RPGs pass on this one.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception is mostly a visual novel with light grid-based strategy RPG elements drizzled in. The story begins interestingly enough but falls victim to modern JRPG tropes like verbose dialogue. I like visual novels, having played quite a few, but I found Mask of Deception's 40-hour runtime a bit hard to swallow since the more interesting bits are buried underneath hours of mediocrity.
