I respectfully disagree with the lower rated review because you can't say Valkyria Revolution isn't like Valkyria Chronicles gameplay without taking into account that Chronicles is a lot older and games evolve in some cases. Nonetheless, I would say Valkyria Chronicles is the Final Fantasy 6 or 7 of the series where Revolution is the Final Fantasy 15 of the bunch. It's really good but it's not Final Fantasy 6 or 7 and no one should go into it expecting it to be since JRPGs were much difference during the time. It's worth buying at this price because it's already pretty cheap. Sega needs people to show love to their quality games like this and Yakuza if we ever want more games to come to the states like this one. Not buying this game and future releases that are similar means Sega is less likely to take a risk in bringing stuff like this over to the U.S. Sonic Mania and Forces can probably survive a price drop if they're not good because they will most likely still sell okay and get new entries of some sort. Pick this game up, it's fun. No it's not Persona 5 or Final Fantasy but if you're done with those this should be next in line. P.S. first prints come with some cute little extras so if you wait that might not be available in later prints (soundtrack and pins).

I enjoy this game a lot, however...

While I really enjoy this game's characters, the story, the soundtrack, and the boss battles, there's a lot of annoyances here. If any of the following turn you off, you may not enjoy this game: 1. There are TONS of cutscenes, more than actual gameplay, and the cutscenes are split up by a TON of loading screens. I haven't seen this many loading screens in a game since Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. Luckily, this game's a lot better than that one. 2. Gameplay takes a backseat to the story. Personally, I'm a fan of many of the characters, so the story is interesting to me. I'm normally not one for anime, however I am enjoying this. That said, it's too bad that they're so frequent since I'd like to be able to enjoy more of the gameplay if there was more of it. 3. Graphically, I think the game looks pretty nice, however it's still pretty dated with stilted & robotic animations that would be more at home in a PS2 game. This doesn't bother me much since many Japanese games are behind western games in this regard. There's a lot to like here, however there's a lot to dislike too, so just be aware of that before buying.

    Fun and beautiful, but different

Valkyria Revolution is the newest game in the Valkyria series and the most important thing to note is that it is a spin-off. Making a return are the beautiful, water-colored visuals that the series is known for and the fantasy pseudo-WWII Europe setting. The character designs are great, the music is scored by Yasunori Mitsuda and it's fantastic, and the game features top-notch Japanese voice acting. What's different is probably the most divisive thing that could have changed. Rather than the turn-based- grid-based strategy RPG approach of the previous games, this game takes to a more pseudo-real time combat system that utilizes an active-time bar found in many Final Fantasy games. This is a huge departure for the series, but as it is a spin-off, differences are to be expected. And despite the great change, it still retains an element of strategy and planning that veterans of the series would be familiar with. Valkyria Revolution is a good game with a couple of flaws, but I would recommend RPG fans to give it a shot.

    Impossible To Play

I was really excited for this collector's set. It looked great. The pin is cool. But that's about it. The game itself is nearly impossible to play. There are so many loading screens. In the first hour of the game, there is 5 minutes of actual game play. The rest is loading screens and so much talking. There are a lot of cut scenes and I'm not against that but it has to load every time one start. The worst part is the loading screens aren't quick. Running it on my PS4 Pro, the loading screens are just as long as the scenes themselves. The graphics are another disappointment. The moving painting style ruins a lot for me because it's in every scene. It's like a bad filter over an anime. Besides all of the technical mediocrities, the story itself is slow and lackluster. The combat is fast and is often over before you know it. I'm not sure if a diehard fan could get passed all of these hangups.

Starting off, this *is* part of the Valkyria universe but should be seen as a side story and doesn't play the same as previous games, which isn't a bad thing. Visually, it's easy to tell this isn't a native PS4 game. Animations are somewhat stiff at times and aren't completely fluid. Graphics could be better, but this game is also on a portable system, you can tell the engine used is scalable to work on weaker hardware. There is also a major difficulty spike more than half way through the game that almost requires you to have skills and gear maxed out to that point. It can get rather frustrating if you don't like or want to grind. But if you don't mind that and get past the fight easily; the game, story and characters are entertaining enough. The music is also great.

Forget everything you know about the Valkyria series. This is a reboot and it has nothing in common with the other games, save for some thematic influences. This is a strict ARPG with only minimal strategy elements, and the squad-based action that goes on is akin to the character switching you see in games like Dynasty Warriors 8 or some such. It's fun, but mindless and repetitive. You go around large scale battle scenes fighting off grunt enemies until a boss appears, and that's pretty much it. There's some rescue missions and huge super-boss scenes, but it's basically Dynasty Warriors: Valkyria. If you like hack n' slash with some minimal strategic and ARPG elements, look no further.

Valkyria Chronicles take on Dynasty Warriors

Very disappointed with this game. It is Valkyria Chronicles take on a Dynasty Warriors game with RPG elements. The game-play, graphics, and combat by itself wouldn't warrant a low review, but the execution of the game as a whole is just poor. Long loading screens, very poor animated cut-scenes, and a lackluster story make this one to avoid. It is very obvious they rushed this to release, and shouldn't be worthy of your time or money.

This spin-off of the Valkyria Chronicles franchise is not the same game. The playstyle is more hack'n'slash action oriented than the tactical, squad-based gameplay of the core games. Although it takes place in the same world as the Chronicles' series, this game is extremely repetitive and lackluster. If you're a fan, you might find some of the story elements interesting, but outside of that, you should not enter the fray with this title. The pin that comes with this edition is pretty nice though!

The Valkyria, the embodiment of death, is returning to the battlefield in Valkyria Revolution, and players will have to do - and sacrifice - whatever is necessary to liberate their homeland. With an engaging story full of political intrigue, a battle system that mixes real-time combat and tactical strategy, a gorgeous visual style, and more, the game will immerse players into the frontlines of a desperate war.

I've played a few hours so far, and it's a pretty fun game. It has many similar themes and names/locations as Valkyria Chronicles, but plays nothing like those games, and is NOT set in the same world. Has a similar art/painting style as the previous games that looks very nice. I feel like it would have been better as a pure action game: the RPG elements feel a little bolted on. Would recommend for $30 or less.

I, like most people, picked this up because of my love of Valkyria Chronicles. I knew this wasn't going to be the same kind of game, but I bought it anyway thinking it'd be a neat spin on a great franchise. It wasn't. The graphics are somehow worse than the PS3 original, the combat is repetitive and bland, and most of characters are tired tropes. Skip this one and hope they make a proper sequel or localize the third game like they should have done in the first place.

Valkyria Chronicles was definitely a special strategy RPG when it was released. It has been remastered on PS4 as well and is definitely worth your time. With that said this title (Valkyria Revolution) tries to build on the style and flair of Chronicles. In my opinion, it falls short, and the game is difficult to get into. Still as a fan of the series, I'm glad I purchased this title, mainly since the packaging is very nice (and comes included with a soundtrack.)

Fuses real time action and turned based strategy. It focuses more on positioning and decisive take downs, rather than leaving the combat solely to RNG. Duck into the tall grass with a Lancer (bazooka) unit to sneak up on an enemy tank, and aim a blow on their power unit from behind. All in real time movement. It's a refreshing take on turned based strategy games. If you were waiting for another Valkyria Chronicles game to reach the States, this is it.

This is not a bad game, but it just isn't anywhere as good as the previous valkyria chronicle games. They cut out all the tactical goodness of the previous games and replaced it with a bland hack-and-slash system which got really repetitive. Those who enjoy Dynasty Warriors-type games will like this, but those wishing to experience the same type of thrill as the previous valkyria games will be dissapointed.

Some People are turn off and giving bad reviews because this game is not like Valkyria Chronicles and is more like Dynasty Warriors. You know what? Thsts ok. This game has good graphics and a great story as long as you take your time to read it and see the scenes. The action part is fun and easy. Not all games need to be hard to be good. I got the edition with the pin included and do not regret it a bit.

When I purchased this game I thought it was a JRPG much like most games of this genre, I was pleasently surprised when the gameplay was a lot more open and free then a JRPG. However bouts of gameplay (roughly five to ten minute missions) are interrupted by about ten minutes of cutscenes both before and after missions and that's for the short videos.

I've played about 2 hours of this game and though it's not exactly like Valkyria Chronicles it does share a few similarities in combat but it's most action and not turned based. It's very story heavy, the opening felt like 30 minutes of cut scenes. I will continue to give this game more time, but so far it's just not scratching that Valkyria Chronicles itch like I had hoped.

I was a big fan of Valkyria Chronicles and was hoping that this would be more of the same. I suppose my nostalgia for Valkyria Chronicles spoiled my impression of this game. For me it was tedious and repetitive in many spots. Wasn't feeling it in the end. If you never played Valkyria Chronicles you'll probably like this game. Otherwise if you're a fan pass on this one.

I have always been a fan of the Valkyria series. As with most of them, this entry is enjoyable however the gameplay seems to get disrupted by the story cutscenes very often. The game looks great, plays well and the story is very well written. Be prepared though to sit through very lengthy cutscenes and load scenes before taking back control if your character.

For anyone who enjoys strategy games both on fighting and story, this game is for you. In addition it offers a wide customization of equipment for your characters and overall the game gives you the ability to sing a lot of hours into the game, or to ignore a lot of the strategy/customization and just kind of blaze thru the story if that is your thing.
