    Don’t waste your time

    We’ve had this tv less than a month. It was only used for evening watching, so it’s not like we used it excessively. In the middle of watching a show, the screen started blurring and even with a factory reset, there are still lines across the screen, making it unwatchable. Due to Best Buy’s 15 day return policy, we are now having to deal with Vizio on getting a replacement tv. Definitely won’t buy another Vizio or any other big ticket items from Best Buy again.

    Great TV with all the apps you've come to expect

    I was looking for a television to use in a secondary location, which is a mostly-enclosed sunroom/patio off our back entrance. Our main TV is in our living room and connected to all kinds of inputs, amps, speakers, etc. Instead of hooking a bunch of stuff in this location, we really just wanted a TV that would have everything built in to receive content wirelessly out of the box. While a lot of TVs do that these days, not many do it very well. Additionally, picture quality is still very important to us and we wanted a bright display. This TV foot the bill perfectly. The setup of the unit was pretty straightforward. It came with two small feet that bolt into the base of the TV. They're very minimalist in design, which I like. The included remote is also rather minimalist, but comes with dedicated buttons for several of the built-in streaming services. After a few moments of setting up and installing updates, the unit was ready for streaming. I found the process of logging into each respective service very easy by using a smartphone. Each time there's a QR code or link, you follow it on your device to authorize it on the unit. Once everything was setup, I was able to page between the various streaming services in Vizio’s easy to navigate interfaces. Aside from the remote and feet, the unit itself also features a minimalist, near bezel-less display with very limited branding visible. It looks very nice from the front, though it is somewhat thicker than I was expecting from the side. This wasn’t an issue for me, but I can see some people desiring a thinner unit. The location where I installed this TV is a semi-indoor semi-outdoor patio. While it's highly protected from most weather elements, there's still a lot of sunlight, especially in the afternoons. I can report that while it does suffer some brightness reduction during the daytime, the brightness of the TV is very easily raised and lowered. Raising it a bit above the manufacturer settings when appropriate, I have been able to enjoy very good picture quality, contrast, and visibility, even on bright days. In addition to the various streaming services, there are 4 HDMI 4K inputs, a USB, analog and optical audio out, antenna input, and ethernet for wired internet. We have had occasions where we move the Nintendo Switch to this TV and video games do very well on the display. I was surprised that AppleTV was even a choice to stream from. I guess they’re licensing the apps on a few televisions, but wanted to note this as I had expected to need to connect an AppleTV device for that content. It was very nice to save in that regard, plus, it keeps ports open. Finally, while most people overlook speaker quality in televisions, it was important that this could stand alone with sight and sound. I tested various levels at times when neighbors were being noisy with leaf blowers. It replicated sound very well, even at loud volumes, and I noticed no distortion, even in the robbery scene in the movie Heat. There are a few things I’ve noticed that, while not deal killers, might give some people frustration. When powering the unit up, it doesn’t make any indication that it’s on until the display is ready. On a few occasions, I thought I missed the IR sensor with the remote and had to do an on-and-off dance with the set before I figured out whether it was on or off. Finally, while there are so many included services, the interface can be on the slow side when compared to dedicated streaming boxes. It’s not so slow that you’ll be screaming at the set, but some might prefer to pair the TV with their preferred streaming box. For me and for this set, I prefer the simplicity of one remote and not having to help the kids or the wife juggle inputs. Overall, I really like this TV and would recommend to anyone who wants wide streaming possibilities, good picture quality, and an affordable price. While it likely isn’t the best in any of those specific areas, I think it’s a good balance of each for most consumers.

    Quality Picture, SmartCast OS has Pros & Cons

    The TV came in perfect condition and was well packaged for shipping. I had no issues with setup (just need a screwdriver for the legs). It is not super heavy even though it is a 55”. Build quality is very good. I plan to mount it to the wall eventually, but I love the legs. The legs are metal and have 2 positions - allowing you to adjust the height of the TV (the higher setting is perfect for its current location on my dresser, which tends to collect things). The screen has virtually no bezel and is protected by a metal case, but the design does leave a small gap around the edge of the screen that I am concerned may collect dust. The TV does not come with a printed user manual (only a quick start guide), but a virtual on one is available in the TV’s menu under settings. I like that it has 4 HDMI inputs (1 eArc enabled for high definition sound), an optical output (useful for older soundbars/receivers) and a USB port for pictures. It is missing a VGA port and AV port. I realize that they are slowly being phased out, but I still have a few cameras and older game systems that need an AV port. Another minor issue is that the power cord is only 5ft long, barely reaching the floor from my dresser - forcing me to use an extension cord to reach the power strip. Picture quality is very good. The picture is sharp and in normal viewing I did not notice any motion blur. My favorite chair is at a 45-degree angle to the TV and I had no problem with the viewing angle. Colors are good, but not as vibrant as some OLED TVs have seen. Even with local dimming, blacks are not perfect, but the screen is very bright. It works well in my bedroom that has a big bay window with lots of sunlight during the day and automatically dims using the ambient light sensor at night. In addition to presents and normal settings there are lots of advanced setting available to tweak the picture (e.g. color correction, backlight settings, noise reduction). Sound quality and volume are good (for a bedroom). The TV does support HDMI eArc that makes hooking up a soundbar easy, but I don’t think I will need it. The TV also offers a simulate surround sound feature, but I prefer the normal setting. I have owned several Vizio TVs and they have been reliable. My oldest Vizio has been in service for over 10 years (with a fluorescent backlight no less). I have a Vizio in my living room that is an older Smart TV that I purchased about 5 years ago - it is a good TV, but the smart features were too clunky so I was interested to see how things had improved. There are lots of smart TV operating systems and I have tried most of them. They all seem to have their positives and negatives. This TV’s operation system is SmartCast and it is no different. SmartCast has some unique content and nice features, but it is missing a few features and has had a few stability issues requiring a restart. The SmartCast phone app is a winner. It allows you to search content and works as a second remote control (useful if you often lose your real remote like me). You can search by voice using the TV’s remote or the SmartCast phone app - handy for pulling up a quick YouTube video. You can also use Alexa to control the TV, but after setting it up the features are too limited and I can tell you that the SmartCast phone app is the way to go if you don’t like the regular remote. SmartCast screen casting from both Android (Chromecast) and Apple (Air Play) work well. With the TV on the same network it was easily recognized by both my Android phone and my Apple iPad. SmartCast has some good content that is easy to access. WatchFree Plus has many of my family’s favorites (Kiddoodle, This Old House TV, old Hallmark movies, and a Lifetime movie channel) and makes it very easy to use (no sign in, no password, no fee, no nothing - you just click on it). WatchFree also has the Vizio fireplace channel (it really is just what it sounds like), which is strangely more comforting than it should be. One of my other favorite components of SmartCast is the dedicated Family & Kids section, which acts as a landing for and has links to family friendly content from many sources (including a variety of movies). The Kiddoodle app is my 4-year-old daughter’s favorite, but WatchFree also has a few channels for kids. SmartCast does have a few issues. While it has many popular apps, it is missing a few that I use on other platforms (Food Network, HGTV, and some network channels). It does have Discovery Plus, which covers HGTV & Food Network, but it would mean paying extra since the same content is free for cable subscribers on those apps. I am also concerned about the stability. I have had the following issues once or twice over the past few weeks: the voice remote stopped working, the audio has been out of sync, and the TV froze while changing inputs. All of these issues were fixed by unplugging the TV for a few seconds so I would recommend you mount it such that you can still power cycle it if needed (a good idea with any smart device in my experience).

    Midrange TV with narrow viewing angles

    The Vizio model M55Q7-J01 Quantum LED TV is a mid-range TV at a mid-range price. It is currently one of your cheapest options with HDMI 2.1 and VRR. It is well packaged in the box and comes with the TV, legs, AC cord, quick start manual and remote. Just remove the straps and lift the box up to start unpacking the TV. I did not install the legs as I am mounting it on a wall. I was disappointed the bolt size for the wall mount on the back of the TV was different than my existing bolts. The online instructions state you DO NOT use the bolts installed the back of the TV for wall mounting. So off I went to the hardware store for M6 14mm bolts. It would be nice if they used the correct bolts in the back of the TV for wall mounting. So many people wall mount TVs now. Pros: - Supports the latest audio (DTS:X, ATMOS) and video (Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG) formats - Awesome color - Chromecast built in - Apple AirPlay - 27 local dimming zones - Fast response time if you are into gaming. - AMD freesync (no Gsync) - Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) - Apps and SmartCast is snappy. - HDMI 2.1 (all 4) - Works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri - Remote has buttons for most of the common apps. Cons: - Narrow viewing angles (VA panel). If you are not going to be sitting in front of the TV to view it, I would look at other options. - Remote feels cheap. The button presses can be a little “sticky” at times. - 60 Hz The connections are on the right side. I am using this in a bedroom and there is not much room on the right side. So I connected all cables (HDMI eARC, BluRay HDMI, Coax for antenna and power) to the TV before mounting it on the wall. I did this while it was still on the packaging base. Set up is typical of most TV’s. One extra step is to pair your remote to the TV as it is Bluetooth. I connected to WiFi easily. There is also an ethernet port. Pay attention to the privacy messages to use the WatchFree+. I did some research on the picture settings. I used many of the recommended settings from Rtings. Or just use Calibrated Dark and Warm color temperature for a good out of the box picture. I do not use this TV for gaming so cannot comment on that. It is mostly used for the apps on SmartCast like Netflix, Hulu, etc. I tried some Netlflix shows that are Dolby Vision and ATMOS. All I can say is WOW!. The picture is amazing. The TV is hooked up to a 5.1.2 soundbar. The surround sound is better than the previous TV. Conclusion – I rate this TV 4 out of 5 stars. This is a good TV in this price range. It supports the latest audio and video formats. Using this where you are positioned straight on to the TV is best. If off angle viewing angles are important to you, this is not the TV for you. The picture quality degrades quickly. It seems cheap from a finish and remote perspective.

    The VIZIO - 55" Class M7 Series Premium Quantum LED 4K UHD Smart TV is a definite winner. Vizio has upped their game big time with their latest M Series. The unit arrived very well packaged and secure inside. The outer shell did have some minor nicks from shipping, but the TV was in good shape. Unpacking was simple, and the handled bag that is included for removing the TV, was a big help to insure that TV was removed correctly. The assembly was a breeze. Two screws for the feet and plug in the power cord to the back receptacle. The television was surprisingly lite for a 55- inch TV. I have a Sony 55-inch flat screen TV that I bought 13 years ago, and it felt at least 20 pounds heavier when I set it up. The remote cover was hard to take off. I had to really squeeze and push the back to get the remote cover off to install the batteries. I managed to pull it off without breaking the remote. There are 4! Yes, 4 HDMI inputs, 1 USB 2.0 (2A) input, 1 Audio out, 1 Optical, 1 cable, 1 ethernet input. I also attached a picture of all the inputs which has more than what is needed for most TV hook ups. The one issue that I did have with the unpackaging was removing the tape and protective shield from the TV screen. The adhesive was very, very sticky, and it seems too rough on the sensitive screen. The whole time I was pulling it off I was cringing, worrying if I was damaging the screen. Vizio needs to dial back the adhesiveness on that blue protective tape because it is a nail biter when being removed. Operation/Functionality The Visio has awesome smart TV capabilities. It has built in Visio TV, which is good for people who do not subscribe to Cable TV. The free TV channels cover most needs for news, since most of the main news outlets are there to pick from. There are also many good free movies options. Additionally, the applications for apple tv, YouTube, etc. are log in ready for those who have subscriptions ready to access. The remote is very easy to use. I use the “back” button more often since it gets you to the view that you previously had, without making you push the home button and losing your place. That is a problem if you are watching a free movie and you accidently push the home button. You lose your place in the movie, and then you must go back into the home button to find the movie that you were watching and start back at the beginning and fast forward. Some applications allow you to sign up for their app. This allows you to pick up where you left off on a movie, without having to go through the home screen and starting over. Also, the ability to sign up is free. It would be nice if the signing up was not necessary, but I can see how each app runs independently. Settings The settings are easy to use such as picture, sound, and global settings. The sound is impressive, and I feel that no additional sound bar is needed (this is never the case with a new TV). I have high standards for the sound experience from my TV. The Vizio M series has saved me a couple hundred dollars (at least) because an additional soundbar is not needed. The picture settings did provide a lot of options to modify the picture, color, and ambient lighting detection. I have chosen to leave it as it is. Usually, I do have to adjust the picture on my new TV's to get it to look crisper and more vibrant. Straight out of the box, the picture is great. There is also Advanced Picture settings, which further your ability to create the picture that is 100% satisfactory to your preferences. Since I am big on privacy, I did not engage the voice remote settings. Also, it is not clear where the voice enabling settings are in the TV settings menu. I did see a setting called “Accessibility” which had a “Talk Back” setting. The "Talk Back" was “off” by default. I am thinking that this is the setting that turns the remote voice command settings on and off. During set up, the TV asked default set up questions; one of which was, if I wanted to enable the voice remote capabilities. I am very pleased with Vizio for respecting privacy and having it default to "off" where voice command is concerned. There is an “Extras” setting for Alexa, Apple AirPlay, and Google Assist. I do not use these settings, but I am sure that these settings useful for those that do. In conclusion the TV functions perfectly for my individual needs which are: · Free news and movies because I do not have any cable subscription · This TV has more apps than you can shake a stick at. No Fire Stick Needed. · Wifi Connectivity is good I noticed no lag. . Sound is surprisingly awesome right out of the box, no additional sound system needed. . The picture is vibrant, crisp, and clear.

    Easy Set Up, Good Pic Quality, Bloatware Galore!

    Even getting it out of the box was easy as pie. Instead of struggling to pull it out while it's laying down or a second person is holding onto the box while you'd be pulling the tv out, Vizio has it set up so that you simply cut off the packaging ties then pull up the cardboard cover, like a game show model revealing your prize. There's a quick start guide, remote with batteries included, general/warranty info, the two leg stands with screws, the power cord, and of course the tv itself. Be careful when handling the tv because there's a warning not to put any pressure on the screen when trying to carry it, move it, or whatnot--there's absolutely no bezel around the tv screen except for the extremely thin plastic frame, and the warning says the glass may break if you apply too much pressure. As stated, set up was easy. You need a Philips screwdriver to attach the leg stands, and there's a choice of two levels or heights, depending on if you intend to put a soundbar beneath the tv. I've had multiple flat screen tv's over the years from several different brands, including Vizio, and this is absolutely the first one ever to give options like that. After attaching the leg stands, I went to put the included batteries in the remote and this is where I ran into trouble, yes, the remote is what gave me the most trouble with set up. The back cover of the remote is impossible to get off--you're simply supposed to slide it off by lightly pressing down and sliding it at the same time, but I could not get a good enough grip to do it; it's lodged shut and the material is smooth and slippery enough so as to not provide any traction. After several frustrating minutes, I ended up getting a fat rubberband which I wrapped around the remote, and that did the trick. Then I plugged the tv in, and Voila! Pops of really bright, clean graphics, great colors, excellent detail. Not the overly bright, saturated, looks-too-fake colors that lots of 4K tvs have these days. Unfortunately though, you are then presented with a TON of bloatware. And when I say a ton, I mean a ton—such as 100 (you read that right, one hundred) apps preloaded onto the main screen and NO way to get rid of any of them. You can reorder them, but that's IT. The main menu itself is just jam packed with what seems like ten thousand choices, and you have to wade through them all. One of my pictures shows this--that's just the top of the menu which scrolls down with a LOT more choices, and that's not even counting choosing from the top bar menu (categories like kids, movies, free stuff, shows, apps, extras). I would have to say it's more than a bit overwhelming, then you kind of get used to it, and how to navigate to your personal favorites. But that doesn’t make it any less frustrating or tiresome. The setup also walks you though connecting to your home Wi-Fi, again, part of the easy set up. The remote control (save for the battery incident) is the redeeming factor in the tsunami of menu items and apps--because it has voice control, and it works well! You simply press it and tell it what you want, and it instantly goes there, without having to wade through the menu. For example, I'll press it and say "YouTube" and it opens the app in seconds, ready for you to watch. There's also some built-in buttons on the remote, if you have those subscriptions, such as Netflix, peacock, prime video, Disney+, etc. (I have a picture of the remote, too). Then there's the standard Home, input, power, settings, mute, etc. buttons as well. Quick note here--we have Spectrum, and this tv cannot download its app to watch. You can purchase/use a Roku streamer or Apple TV to hook up to this tv as a workaround; they both have the Spectrum app. Fortunately this tv has some good video/audio connections--4 HDMI's, a TV tuner, a 5.1 Digital Optical, a Stereo Audio, an Ethernet, a USB port. It also works with practically every assistant/home automation--Apple AirPlay, Apple HomeKit, Hey Google, Alexa...it even has Chromecast built in. We have a lot of Apple products in our household, and we're glad it has AirPlay so we can effortlessly mirror what's on our iPhones, iPads, or Macs when we want to. I also tried out using the Chromecast to mirror our phones/tablets/laptops and again, it worked flawlessly and easy. I would say that the tv itself is thin, it's good enough, but I've seen thinner at similar price points (picture of this view as well is included). For the picture quality, software, features, etc. it's really good; I'm thinking that all the bloatware is one of the reasons the tv isn't at a higher price point. The tv is excellent overall, but I'm dinging it one star because of the excessive bloatware and convoluted menu with no real options to streamline it or personalize it other than rearranging the one row of 100 pre-loaded, non-deletable apps.

    Please learn from my couple of mistakes and you can make the absolute most of this beautiful TV! I would like to start by recommending that you maybe do a curbside pick-up of this TV because I completely understand that the mail services are overwhelmed but there was a good deal of bang ups to my box and I can attest that this TV is extremely fragile; I didn’t seem to have any damage caused by the shipping of the item but if you can pick this one up in person, I would definitely recommend that option. This is definitely a fragile TV, there’s a notice on the front of the box that it’s bezel-less and let that be your warning that unboxing and setting up this TV needs to be done with the upmost of care! I was able to keep the TV in the protective bag and cut holes in the bottom of the plastic (bag) so that I could install the “feet” while it was nice and safe. I want to note that the “feet” feel like good and heavy duty steel so as much as I’d love to have this TV mounted, that’s just not an option in our living room and so I have to depend on the feet to stabilize it and I will say that even with two kids under 10 running around, I am not concerned about this thing shaking or being unsteady at all, which is a godsend! The only issue that I ran into was when removing the tape that is supposed to protect the edges of the screen, it did pull slightly on the screen. If the screen is solid white, for whatever reason, then I can see two faint pinkish lines on that area but otherwise it is not something that I notice at all, I do mention this wishing that there was a better way to package it up and keep it safe with less potential for damage. I feel like I was super careful when removing that tape, but I do warn you, dear review reader, to take your time there, just in case! As far as the packaging, though, I do want to commend Vizio for doing an awesome job putting the remote and cord and instructions into a separate box so that there’s little to no chance of misplacing it when going through all of the packing pieces. It should also be noted that the remote is a great size and weight so I’m hoping that there’s less opportunity for it to get lost around my living room. Our old remote was pretty “standard size” for smart tv attachments, and that little thing wound up slipping between couch cushions all of the time and causing some strife between me and my precious children… we are going on a week now without any issues with this remote so we’re on a winning streak here! Now the really good part… I consider myself a pretty avid TV watcher, but I will say that in the past, especially having two small children, I just felt like I should always go with whatever TV happened to be best size at the lowest possible price. I will attest that some good deals can be found out in the wild on TVs, but this TV has REALLY shown me the benefit in investing a little more because the picture is absolutely gorgeous!!! I set up my TV on a Saturday night so I naturally started off watching some college football on it and I cannot really put into words just how amazed I was at the difference between the previous “budget” 55-inch screen that I had verses this one, it was honestly like every person in the crowd had been put on the portrait mode from my phone! It actually took me about two days to get used to the red colors on the screen because they are so vibrant that it was a shock to my eyes at first. It was quite a wonderful “problem” to have. I just cannot overstate how lovely things look on this screen!!! The set-up was an absolute breeze because (most) all of your apps are already downloaded and right on the main part of the home screen. Most of the apps allowed us to simply scan a QR code with our phones so that we didn’t have to try and remember every password and type in our email address by scrolling through letters on the screens. I LOVE the QR code way of logging in! The only app that we had an issue with was the ESPN+ app… or well, the lack of ESPN+ app, I’m not sure why that app is not available on the Vizio TV but Disney+ was so that appeased my children quickly. The “casting” feature is VERY easy to use and my husband, who is not a person comfortable with “a lot of technology” (his words not mine) was able to pick it up super-fast so we have used that successfully to watch anything we needed that wasn’t downloaded and available. There are ton of channels on the Watch Free+ app that is downloaded and available and we have found some really fun content and movies to watch on there that was not available on our regular streaming services. All in all, I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this TV to anyone looking to improve their family room, the picture and the sound are just fabulous, and I’m so glad to get to experience it!!!

    I had been looking at a different brand from another retailer, but we had issues with it such as it wouldn’t even power on. We have a number of Vizio TVs, but this one is a step up in quality. This M series gives me a better picture and features for a decent price. The salesperson at Best Buy was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.

    I say good, but not great for a couple reasons. Viewing angle is too narrow for a TV of this size. Also, colors were not as rich or vivid as I expect. I tried every single combination of settings, including defaults and those recommended on calibration sites. It seems the best it can be should be better.

    The picture is very clear. You will need a fire stick or Roku device to get certain streaming apps. Overall this is a great tv.

    The quality of this TV is spectacular BUT it has to be tweaked to your liking, the default pic settings are not good and unrealistic, but once you modify it, the quality can be compared to a Tv almost double the price, I was having some issues with the HDMI ports and CEC feature but they released an update like two days after i got it and everything worked out, I have a Sonos beam 2 connected through the EARC port and is magnificent, one more thing that is does have 4 HDMI ports when other brands that are 2 or 300 dlls more expensive only offer two and sometimes 3 ports, I don't use the smart part of the vs which is the smart cast I have an Apple Tv connected and it looks amazing specially cause of the Dolby Vision, the value on this tv i would say minimum 999.99 and I can't believe I paid 559.00 for it, GREAT DEAL, QUALITY etc etc

    So far is working great and was easy to mount above my fireplace. Only complaint is the input for my cable box sometimes is not recognized and I have to reset it. Overall happy with the purchase though.
