War Dogs – Jonah Hill is repellently brilliant

This is a review from The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/aug/28/war-dogs-review-jonah-hill-repellently-brilliant) Jonah Hill is so repellent – all swagger, sweat and unapologetic sexism – in War Dogs, that for a while, you don’t immediately realise what a blitzkrieg of a performance he delivers. Bulked up considerably for the role, he plays Efraim Diveroli, one half of a real-life pair of twentysomething Yeshiva schoolfriends from Miami who made millions by hawking dodgy supplies to the US military. He looks like a doughnut stuffed with testosterone and reckless ambition; his hyena laugh has a combination of pleading neediness and mania that makes it chillingly effective. It’s the force of Hill’s tremendous, committed performance, plus the chemistry with costar Miles Teller (very much the straight man here as Efraim’s business partner, David Packouz) which carries a film that takes too many cliched routes to ever match the quality of its lead actor. War Dogs: how Todd Phillips went from the Hangover to arms dealing in Iraq. Director Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Old School) is an old hand at telling stories about blokes behaving badly, but with this film, which could have been the picture to elevate him from gross-out mass-market comedy to something a little more sophisticated, he drops the ball. The aim, evidently, was to combine the brash racket of American Hustle with the cynicism of Lord of War. But by copying Hustle’s voiceover narration, the blanket-bombing approach to music and the toe-tappingly obvious retro score, Phillips just looks lazy. It’s a pity, because this is a great story: a tall tale about a couple of chancers scoring billion-dollar deals and blundering through some of the most dangerous places in the world, it should have made for a propulsive, stylish thriller. Entertaining as it may be, original it certainly isn’t.

I expected a movie filled with bad words but compared to other movies this had an interesting timeline and not so much bad stuff.. It was funny and it was not over the top. It has a nice and believable acting. It wasn't loaded with CGI and Physics defying effects as most movies are today. In fact everything looked as it should have, in a real life scenario. for that reason I enjoy it.

I bought this because I love Jonah Hill in previous movies. There were some funny parts, but could have benefitted from more comedy. I watched a few times, but not one of those movies you can watch over and over again. Ana de Armas was too beautiful, she should have had more time in the movie. I would move it to watch over and over again category had that been the case!

Surprisingly good. I didn't have high expectations for this movie, but it was informative and entertaining, and exceeded my expectations. Will it be a "go-to" movie of mine? No. But was it a waste of time to watch - no.

The comedy drama follows a couple of young and unseasoned arms dealers, who receive a US Army contract. They supply bullets for the Afghan Army worth about $300 million bucks. But things go very wrong, and they get caught. Funny sometimes, and also sometimes sad, but a very original story that will keep you entertained to the end.

Hill gives another astounding performance! However he is freaking annoying, it's part of his character. Miles Teller is alright himself! Great fun movie, don't expect any action at all because there is absolutely none of that here! The 4k quality on this bad boy is on point! Sound is still good too, but I mostly buy these for quality. Great movie!!!

Who wouldn't want to make a lot of money fast? And off the government to boot! These guys had the idea to legally sell weapons to the military and make a lot of money doing it. It is always tough to work with family and friends and this is no different. Things start out great and slowly go downhill. A must see movie!

Very funny and thought provoking movie. The picture quality and scenes in movie really show well on my new high definition tv. The colors really stand out and make it enjoyable to watch and hear on a high def TV set. I would recommend to see and hear the movie on a high def TV set.

Great movie...sad that they got away with cheating the military with poor quality weapons, that may or may not have gotten US soldiers and Marines killed...but a well made movie...actors were great...not a high level theatrical performance, but good overall for entertainment.

You ever watch a movie that isn’t necessarily a “great” movie that you’d stump for awards, but you just enjoy watching it and keep coming back to it? This is one of those.

This is actually a true story. There were several funny parts and I enjoyed the movie. I can't give it 5 stars since it was not "great". However, I will probably watch it again because there were entertaining parts in the movie. Lot of cussing though...

another "based on a true story" that surprised us by being very engrossing - the cookie cutter aspects of the story are rescued by a wonderful performance by Jonah Hill who is rapidly becoming a terrific character actor - he's not all laughs here

This was a great movie and insight to how two 20 something year olds were able to score a three hundred million dollar contract from the government on arms. Jonah Hill hits the comedy as he normally does, and Miles Teller gives it the quiet flare that it needs.
