Customers enjoy the ample storage space and ease of use of the My Book 5TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive. The drive's reliability and price point are also frequently praised, along with its fast USB 3.0 transfer speeds and quiet operation. While some users found the included software less intuitive, the positive feedback on other features outweighs this concern.

Nice Backup - when it actually functions.

Unfortunately, WD's MY Book external storage drive constantly stops functioning. After a lot of, well, 'chink-a-chink' akin to an 19th-century choo-choo train, the PC-connection often just suddenly disappears. At best this requires unplugging the WD both from the outlet and it's USB. Now, how long before this drive mechanically goes poof?.

I did not like the Western Digital software at all. I returned the item and purchased a Seagate drive instead. Their backup software is much better. It backs up your data faster and it doesn't bog down your PC like the WD software does.

First time I've had an issue with WD. I have a few WD products, and never had a problem but this one from the get go was having trouble being read by computer. It was hit and miss if it was going to find it, now nothing at all.

WD has a great reputation. I have at least 4 WD external drives that I trust my data with. So when I saw this 5TB drive for $120 I thought what a great deal. I can put all my stuff in one place and finally cull out those duplicate and triplicate files. I wanted to partition the drive out of the box to separate my pictures from documents from other stuff. I wasn't able to partition it until after I ran Windows scan disk and repaired 100+ bad sectors. I've never had to do this to a new HDD, and it didn't instill confidence that I would be able to retrieve my files long term, so back it went.
I'm going to give it a shot with the 4TB MyBook. Got it unpacked and no issues partitioning the drive or copying files. So far so good. I would avoid the 5TB model.

I bought this to backup photos from my computer. It serves the purpose. One thing I don't like is that it is not simple to find the photos on the drive, I had to search to find the folder that they were stored in.

This drive has issues if you try and use it with a laptop or tablet. It doesn't seem to draw enough power even with the separate power source. I have a Microsoft surface pro 4 and the drive stops spinning randomly and has a significant delay spinning back up when trying to browse or open files. These issues are not present when connected to my desktop PC with a 500 watt power supply.

I put Xbox One in the title because that was exactly what I was looking for when I was shopping for an external hard drive. This worked perfectly and it was extremely easy to transfer all of my games from my internal drive and also re-download all the games I had to delete because of the undersized 500 GB drive the original system came with. I went from 500GB to 5TB with minimal effort and a very decent price. I could have got by with a less expensive, smaller external, but the price and ease of use made it a good choice for me.
