    Media Storage Dream Drive

    |
    Posted .

Pros: Lot's of space for movies, music, pictures, game backups, etc. Dual 8TB drives is great. Seamless RAID, drives are easy to access and replace if ever needed. Being able to centralize media in a single l drive location is perfect especially if you need to take it and run quickly. (fire or traveling, etc) Gray coloring blends into my media setup unlike my previous 2TB World Book that was white. Very fast transfer speeds over USB 3.0. I've seen peak transfers around 280MB/s but I don't typically monitor it. Source drive has a lot to do with the transfer speed. SSD to USB are very fast. Works with Dish Network, LG BluRay player, Windows 8.1, Windows 7. Large 1080p movie files stream with additional traffic without issue. Runs cool Indicator light is dull unobtrusive white. Cons: none to note, just not the most stylish of devices, it's looks will not impress your family. May have issues with 8TB with some routers. TP-Link AC 1750 router would not recognize this drive as a media device. If using this over network be sure to check your router's USB connection (3.0) and max hard dive specs. Not sue why other comment has idling issues. Probably some software accessing the drive constantly. Don't see this issue while hooked up to a large network of computers and other media devices. comes preformatted to NTFS

Best bang for the buck RAID!

I had been looking for a RAID drive for a year and finally came across this drive. It's by far the least expensive RAID drive I've found and being that it's from Western Digital, you know it's reliable! It uses two WD RED series drives. It's not listed on their website as a drive for Mac however all you have to do is reformat the drive for OSX and then download the software compatible with this drive and you're up and running!

Very Happy With Purchase & Product

Western Digital has been one of my all-time favorite companies for storage. I have tons of photo's/video's and when I found this product, I was amazed that it has (2) two, 4TB hard-drives enclosed in one case. I like the idea of formatting one or, both drives separately using Raid and using both drive together for a total of 8TB. So far, as I suspected, I've had NO PROBLEMS with the workmanship of the unit and I have been VERY HAPPY with it's performance. Western Digital stands by their products if you ever need any questions asked. I would definitely recommend this item to anyone who wants the ultimate in storage capacity.

    Great external HDD

This is my 4th WD Hard Drive. I filled up my last two 2TB drives so I wanted to get a much bigger drive and 8TB seemed to fit the bill. I absolutely love the usb 3.0. Only one of my previous drives had that so the speed is great. I also love the two port hub on the back for expansion. Would definitely recommend!!!!!!

Can't beat the features for the price

I'm running this 8TB My Book Duo in RAID 1 Mirror on an iMac and I love it. The setup is so fast and simple and transfer speeds are amazing. You can't beat the price for having two independent drives set to RAID 1 for complete redundancy. God forbid one drive fails, just pop in a new one and you won't miss a beat. The only reason I'm giving this 4/5 stars is because I'm actually on my second unit. I'm running the latest version of Yosemite on my Mac and for some reason, the My Book Duo keeps giving me a RAID Stripe Set has failed error message. Working with WD support, they suggested just to be safe, I swap the unit out, so I did. Now my second one is doing the same thing. However it might end up being a firmware issue with the HDD and Yosemite. Working with WD to confirm that. The drive is running flawlessly so I highly doubt two back to back random units would give me the same error message because of actual faulty hardware. Love this thing...

    Worked as advertised

I am very happy with Wd - My Book Duo 8tb 2-bay External Usb 3.0 Storage. What is nice is it had the ability to stripe the drive for speed or mirror for another layer of backup. Hooked it up to my router and use it as a backup and personal cloud storage. They include software for backing up but I have not used it so I know nothing about those programs.

    Out of the box problems

    Posted .

I bought the WD My Book Duo 8 TB drive two days ago from Best Buy. Ordered online, picked up at the store within 3 days. Best Buy was quick and efficient, and I like the fact I saved on shipping by being able to pick up at my local store. Best Buy = 5 Stars. I picked up this drive and headed home to install. The drive comes with WD Drive Utilities, an application that allows the user to reformat the drive for either windows or mac, and also to choose the optimal Raid configuration. I reformatted to HFS+ (mac) and chose the Raid 1 configuration. Raid 1 mirrors the 4 TB drive for backup purposes. This was easy and fast. Immediately I started moving over several TBs of data, as I was long overdue for a new external drive. The USB 3 is faster, but moving this much data takes all night. Unfortunately, the next morning I awoke to an error on the computer screen stating "Raid Stripe 1 has failed" and referred me back to the WD Drive Utilities. I opened the utilities to find that my only option is to reformat the drives once again and reinstall the Raid 1, which, coincidentally, I had done less than 24 hours before and 2TB of information already moved onto the drive. A quick Google search shows that this problem has occurred with other customers of this drive, refer to the large retailer page named after a jungle in Brazil. I have not tried removing all the data and reformatting once again, as I assume the exact same error will occur after I put forth all that effort. I am highly unimpressed with this drive from the get go. 12 hours out of the box and already a Raid 1 failure, already leaves me quite skeptical as to how much security this mirrored drive is really going to provide me in the future. I have contacted WD to open a claim. I have rated this drive with 1 star pending WD's customer service attempt to help fix this problem. I will update this review as I receive additional information.

Does what it's supposed to do

Hard to review storage drives they either work or do not I'll say this was definitely on the more expensive side but with the 2 Xtra USB ports you can double or triple your capacity very easily I connected 2 4tb drives with no issue, I already have n now have 16tb of space for movies, pictures etc.

    So far so good...

Pretty good deal for this purchase. Was on sale at Best Buy but someone else had it cheaper so they price matched. Can be used as "just a bunch of disks" for the full 8 TB or in a mirrored or other RAID configuration for 4 TB. Exactly what I needed for my photo library and music backups.

    Great back up!

It's a great back up, easy to set up, and very fast it backed up a 1tb in only 7 hours which is pretty quick for just a usb connection! Although reason I rated it a 4 out of 5 is cause it's made very cheap and feels cheapy since it's all plastic.

I use it in mirror drive mode so all files are double saved. I feel very confident that my files are protected. I even cloned my Mac OS system so I can use it as a startup drive if necessary.

I needed a backup solution at a reasonable price. This backs up to two 8 TB hard drives at the same time. If one drive fails I still have the backup. Great product.

The drive was not recognized by my PC. I had to go through WD to get a replacement which worked just fine. Then after a WD Smartware update I had to do an uninstall of the drive and driver then reboot PC and reinstall the drive.

This was not what we expected as we thought that it would be a plug and play system so that we could download everything easily. However that was not the case.
