I am very happy with Wd - My Book Duo 8tb 2-bay External Usb 3.0 Storage. What is nice is it had the ability to stripe the drive for speed or mirror for another layer of backup. Hooked it up to my router and use it as a backup and personal cloud storage. They include software for backing up but I have not used it so I know nothing about those programs.

This was not what we expected as we thought that it would be a plug and play system so that we could download everything easily. However that was not the case.

I've tried three different backup manufacturers. This was by far the best.

Can't beat the features for the price

I'm running this 8TB My Book Duo in RAID 1 Mirror on an iMac and I love it. The setup is so fast and simple and transfer speeds are amazing. You can't beat the price for having two independent drives set to RAID 1 for complete redundancy. God forbid one drive fails, just pop in a new one and you won't miss a beat. The only reason I'm giving this 4/5 stars is because I'm actually on my second unit. I'm running the latest version of Yosemite on my Mac and for some reason, the My Book Duo keeps giving me a RAID Stripe Set has failed error message. Working with WD support, they suggested just to be safe, I swap the unit out, so I did. Now my second one is doing the same thing. However it might end up being a firmware issue with the HDD and Yosemite. Working with WD to confirm that. The drive is running flawlessly so I highly doubt two back to back random units would give me the same error message because of actual faulty hardware. Love this thing...

Western Digital Is The Way To Go

I recently had purchased this Western Digital 8TB My Book Duo External Hard-Drive about a week ago and I couldn't be more happier. I have been a Western Digital user for a long time and have been very pleased with all their products. This hard-drive has more than enough space to hold all my audio, video and software files. It has blazing transfer speeds of up to 295MB using USB 3.0. It also comes with RAID storage so you can configure it with "Strip" (Maximum Capacity & Storage) "Mirror" (Maximum Data Protection), or, "JBOD" (Individual Drives). I would recommend this product to any one who wants massive storage capacity and reliability from "Western Digital"

    Out of the box problems

I bought the WD My Book Duo 8 TB drive two days ago from Best Buy. Ordered online, picked up at the store within 3 days. Best Buy was quick and efficient, and I like the fact I saved on shipping by being able to pick up at my local store. Best Buy = 5 Stars. I picked up this drive and headed home to install. The drive comes with WD Drive Utilities, an application that allows the user to reformat the drive for either windows or mac, and also to choose the optimal Raid configuration. I reformatted to HFS+ (mac) and chose the Raid 1 configuration. Raid 1 mirrors the 4 TB drive for backup purposes. This was easy and fast. Immediately I started moving over several TBs of data, as I was long overdue for a new external drive. The USB 3 is faster, but moving this much data takes all night. Unfortunately, the next morning I awoke to an error on the computer screen stating "Raid Stripe 1 has failed" and referred me back to the WD Drive Utilities. I opened the utilities to find that my only option is to reformat the drives once again and reinstall the Raid 1, which, coincidentally, I had done less than 24 hours before and 2TB of information already moved onto the drive. A quick Google search shows that this problem has occurred with other customers of this drive, refer to the large retailer page named after a jungle in Brazil. I have not tried removing all the data and reformatting once again, as I assume the exact same error will occur after I put forth all that effort. I am highly unimpressed with this drive from the get go. 12 hours out of the box and already a Raid 1 failure, already leaves me quite skeptical as to how much security this mirrored drive is really going to provide me in the future. I have contacted WD to open a claim. I have rated this drive with 1 star pending WD's customer service attempt to help fix this problem. I will update this review as I receive additional information.
