The TV show Westworld is based on this 1970s movie. The movie is a little dated but fun

Anyone watching HBO's West World, needs to see this film. It was where all was spawned.

Westworld was filmed in 1973, which shows the beginning of the story as definitely futuristic, for a 1973-filmed movie. But I was disappointed with all of the resort-settings in the story being recreations of the past: The Roman Empire, the Renaissance, and the Old West in the 1880's. I was hoping there would be an advanced "Spaceworld" setting, which would sort of be like a 'Star Trek' setting -- or a setting similar to '2001: A Space Odyssey'. Yul Brynner was good at portraying a realistic 'Gunslinger' android, in both the early gunfight-game in the film, and in the second gunfight-game in the middle of the movie. But toward the end of the movie, as the now *literally dangerous* Brynner-android pursued the story's protagonist to his death, I began losing interest in the story; in spite of how heavy the climax was.

Guys go to an amusement park of their choice where they can interact with robots... except robots now have ability to override commands. It turns into a blood bath when that happens and it is down to the robots versus man. Pace is pretty good in movie not overly exciting but for '73 movie it is entertaining.

    Michael Crichton's First Directorial Film!

This is the original, 1973 film. Michael Crichton wrote the screenplay, then directed the movie of an amusement part gone out of control. The resorts are hedonistic retreats, populated by androids, where the guests can indulge in any adventure. But the amusement park breaks down, and guests start dying (a theme Crichton will return to in Jurassic Park.) The firm is fast paced and suspenseful, as the Gunslinger won't stop hunting the lead character Martin. The SFX and technology shown do not age well, although it was the first film to use digital image processing. This firm provides a lot of the backstory to the current HBO series Westworld, and acts as an unofficial prequel (the HBO show references the "breakdown" of 20 years past.) All in all, a great movie for a rainy day!

I watched the HBO series first and thought it was amazing. From there I needed more west world and figured the original movie would be a great companion piece after the series. This is a good movie for sure, and seems to hold up well in my opinion. I can see where they chose actors and performances in the new series that were pulled direct from this movie. My only disappointment was that the movie did not expand the story or give me any other real information or insight beyond what we learned from the new series. I have not read the books and was told that is where you learn everything, so maybe I'll tackle that next. Overall great movie, run time is short for such a big idea, but still well made. I'm surprised there was never a sequel and that it took this long to revisit such a unique idea and concept.
