Before there was a massively popular TV show called Westworld there was the not so popular TV show Beyond Westworld, and before that the movie Futureworld, and before that the movie Westworld that started it all!
It's directed by the best selling author Michael Crichton. Like most of his works it has the theme of humans creating life, and that life creating something unexpected and against plan. Chaos Theory. Like Jurassic Park, Westworld takes place at an adult amusement park where you can enjoy realistic lives in Medieval World, Rome World, and Westworld. Life like robots roam the park, and you can essentially do whatever you want, no matter how vile. This thriller is very fun, interesting, and tense as the machines start to become more aware than anticipated. This is what started it all, and it's totally worth the watch.

Reasonably interesting sci-fi fantasy from '73, that still is moderately enjoyable. When it was new, I saw it, theatrically and went back, multiple times. The gimmick (a morbidly funny/scary satire on theme parks) was really fun, like a ride on a roller coaster. Some of that still remains, but seeing it dressed up on blu ray just emphasizes what a cheapjack production is really was. It looks tacky, today. The performers are all still great, and the pace is quite nice, but the production looks like TV movie of the period, something I overlooked, then.

This is one that was a bit hard to swallow till you see how its all put together and the normal world goes into a futuristic format , a Disney land for adults ! And you get to choose your poison/fantasy and you take your place in whatever future or past . And then see how going a little too far in your favor upsets the situation and activates something in the computers to revolt and take revenge .
Then it becomes horror land and how stone faced that Yule looked was scary ! He really became a monster for this part , real good stuff !

I was interested in seeing this after watching the new HBO version of the story. It's definitely worth a watch just to see the differences of each version and see how far the concept has come.

Michael Crichton only directed a few films, but his novels have been made into some great and not-so-great flicks; JURASSIC PARK being one of the former! WESTWORLD (written AND directed by him) prefigures some of the system-breakdown/machines-run-themselves elements that feel like more a part of our lives today than they ever would've been in 1973. Yul Brynner's iconic Wild West death machine is certainly worth the price of admission, as is James Brolin's easygoing pseudo-hero. The disc looks and sounds great & should be on the shelf of every self-respecting sci-fi cineaste.

I think the video looks very good although a bit grainy but that might just be the way it was filmed. I was scared when the movie started in 4:3 but the rest of the movie is widescreen. My only issue was the Spanish track was in mono but at least it had a Spanish track. Yul Brenner is so scary in this movie. What a great talent! It didn't really blow me away in terms of audio and video but its a good film worth watching.

Yea, well -- what can I say about this movie? A lot of things but basically I'll just say this. This is a movie from the 70s with some tremendous actors, great story and perfect build up toward the end. A sci-fi, action, adventure movie that will make you see how an expensive trip for those who want to vacation can start off as a dream come true to a worst nightmare tho those just looking to have fun in a time where you could be a cowboy, a knight or part of the romantic time before 20th century. The movie was just great beyond words.

Before Jurassic Park Michael Crichton envisioned an immersive set of theme parks where YOU’RE always the winner right or wrong. In Westworld a couple guy buddies enjoy themselves and get the better of Yul Brynner looking like he stepped off the set of “The Magnificent Seven”. Everything is fine until malfunctions cause the Brynner figure to not take any guff anymore. The special effects are dated and clunky but it’s still a fun ride.

Don't get this version of the original Westworld film for the extras--they are sparse, but the original film looks and sounds fantastic on Blu-Ray. If you're a big fan of the HBO Westworld series, you should certainly check out the film on which it's based, written and directed by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Congo, Sphere, The Andromeda Strain). This story serves as an interesting foundation for what Crichton would do later with Jurassic Park. And nobody can beat Yul Brynner as the Man in Black.

Westworld is an engaging movie about robots/androids based in a park to entertain rich patrons. Of course there will be a problem, but the movie plays out very creatively and the payoff with an actor of Yul Brynner's stature is quite creepy. This movie was made before computer generated effects, yet the effects are quite convincing.
I do recommend it.

Anyone growing up in the 70's probably remembers this movie...and upon viewing it again recently I think it still holds up. Sure, there's a little cheesiness here and there, but James Brolin and Richard Benjamin in a movie with a robot Yul Brenner??? Winning!!!
The transfer here is not fantastic but as a cool trip down memory lane it was totally worth the price.

I watched the HBO series and wanted to watch the movie, so when I saw it at Best Buy I had to have it, we watched it right away and I liked it more than what I thought I was going to like it. Watch the special features, they have the TV pilot and it explains some things that I didn't understand from the movie. It was a good buy.

While I enjoy the new version of Westworld, I couldn’t wait to see the original again. When this movie came out, it was very unique and quite a different concept from the movies being produced at that time. This movie may cause everyone to rethink the merits of artificial intelligence.

Had this movie years ago on DVD but loaned out and never returned.
Finally have a copy on Blu-ray! The story line is still very good, even today. Yul Brynner is awesome as the gunslinger. His portrayal makes the whole plot click. No other actor could have done justice to the part.
The new cable series is missing one thing. Mr. Brynner!

I remember watching this on Saturday afternoon on TBS or another cable channel. It brings back nostalgia which is good.
At the time I found the story very surprising and clever and loved it. It is stil very clever and has good acting. I wish more movies were this smart and fun to watch. A great popcorn movie and the blu ray brings some improvement in its transfer.

Westworld is an outstanding classic film. It is very well acted and the filming is good, especially for a movie from the 1970s. Blythe Danner, the main character is Gwyneth Paltrow's real-life mom. The plot and story line [always the most important items] are excellent. I like the surprise ending.
