Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the overall performance of the washing machine, although some have expressed concerns regarding the fabric load sensor system's effectiveness and the spin cycle's noise and vibration. Issues with the water level sensor and its tendency to overfill have also been reported. Several users found the machine's operation to be unexpectedly loud and shaky during the spin cycle. These issues, however, did not overshadow the positive aspects of the machine for all users.

    I Can't Recommend This Washer...Sorry

I've read all the other reviews and wanted to post my own review once I actually used the washer myself. My new washer actually arrived today, but I have washed about 7 loads since I've been without one for several days. First of all, yes the fabric load sensor system really sucks. I found this out very quickly. I saw at least one other review which stated she had to babysit the machine. Well I feel the same. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my liquid Tide in the machine without affecting the sensor because it's true that once you close the lid if you raise it again, the sensor will fill the water level completely full. We all know we can't just pour the liquid detergent directly on the clothes because it will stain. What I've resorted to doing is pouring it in the empty machine, starting it just till it fills enough to dilute the water and then opening the lid once I turn it off to add my clothes. This really sucks because I can't add the detergent once the clothes are already loaded because the water won't begin to fill until the lid is closed. What a dilemma! Who in the world thought of this bright idea??? As far as getting the clothes clean, it seems to do that. I haven't experienced any lint on the clothes after the wash as some other reviewers have posted, and believe me I did check thoroughly. It's not a quiet machine folks. I was surprised that it was actually louder than my 12 year old Kenmore that just died on me. I just expected a quieter machine with all of today's technology. I guess we get what we pay for because I did get it for a very good price. I really wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this machine due to the fabric load sensor. You can't control your water levels, and once you raise that lid to add your detergent the machine just fills all the way with water. Had I realized I could not control the water levels myself, I would have bypassed this machine. I'm giving 3 stars due to the price and cleanliness of clothes. The rest is out the window though on this machine. Think again Whirlpool.

    Huge Disappointment

This is my first "new" washer and I feel very let down. I used the washer 2x and the auto water level switch burned up (you could smell it), and I had to call for repair, after waiting 3 weeks for the part the repair man replaced the switch and the water level still fills the entire washer up even when only 1 towel was placed inside. I have now been waiting an additional 2 weeks and am being told there are no switches to be had. I was thrilled about saving water, however I have done nothing but waste water since day 1! I agree that there is a huge defect that if you lift the lid once after the machine has started the water automatically fills to the top. I am constantly adding things after the fact and had I known this would happen I would never of purchased this!

    Not user friendly

Forget trying to get a rebate on this machine because it has an Energy Star rating. You won't. After you put the soap and laundry into this machine and start it, you can't open the lid for any reason or it will fill completely up with water. It has a sensor that lightly dampens the clothes, then weighs them, then decides how much water to add. If you lift the lid, it restarts the weigh cycle, so even if you're washing 4 items, the washer fills to the top. There's no way to reset the washer. I've tried. The spin cycle is very loud and vibrates. I'd tell you how well the wash cycle works, but since I can't lift the lid and look...I don't even know if it's really working. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy this washer.

    A good washing machine

We bought this washing machine a few weeks ago, so far it works fine for us on different tasks and options. It is a little bit noisy but not too bad. A couple of suggestion for users: 1. never use too much detergent than suggested, 2. if you want to open the lift, you need to pause the machine by pulling up the button; otherwise it won't save water. 3. Always level your machine. 4. If you need more water for your comforts, chose that option on the control pannel. Consider the price, energy star rating and options, it is a good investment.

    Uncertainty of product

I was very excited about the washer at first. It does get the clothes very clean and takes out stains well. I am uncertain if the water level feature really works? I see water draining when it is still filling, and seems to fill a long time even with small loads. Don't like not being able to lift the lid after it has started because it resets and automatically fills it to the top with water. After a couple of months it started to be very noisy on the spin cycle especially, and then after 5 months of owning it, it quit, and will not start at all. I am thankful it is under warranty and it may be worth buying an extended 5 yr warranty if this kind of thing is going to happen often. Very frustrating with small children to not have a washing machine!!

    Loud cycles, vibrates upstairs floor

Bought this in place of my front loader whirlpool washing machine, in hopes that buying an old fashioned top loader would minimize vibration (very powerful LOUD spin cycle) on my upstairs laundry room floor. Careful not to over stuff loads, after about 3 wks upstairs, this washing machine became just as shakey and squeaky as my big heavy front loader was (in the spin cycle). Bottom line, never buy a home with an upstairs laundry room...but if you are in this unfortunate situation be prepared to spend top dollar on your anti-vibrating new age washer.

    Hate it!!!!

Washer was replacement for the Whirlpool I had. Geek squad repairman came out to repair old washer under warranty six times. About six weeks without a washer. Finally, replaced washer with what was suppose to be comparable. Water level sensor is a pain. If I dropped or forgot a garment, I can not add it or the water level changes. I decided to check to see how well the washer senses for water level and even if you put a very small delicate load in the washer fills a third or more of the way up. Much more than when I picked the water level and could control it. Then when I put big loads in the washer does not even fill half way. Also I have more lint on my clothes than before and the water temp sensor is either too hot or too cold. I keep adjusting the intake on the valves to control water temp. It should be easier to wash clothes not harder. I feel I have to babysit the machine. My water usage bill and sewer bill went up.

i bought this washer dryer set a litte over a year ago. first the dryer heating element went out....fuse kept blowing with no reasons...the repair man said. well then a month later this washer went out...will not spin any more....I spent the extra money and switched to whirlpool thinking it will be worth it...but don't waiste your money or time with these unless you are a repairman yourself...If you do purchase it you better get the extended warranty with it....other than that look at a diffrent brand NOT WHIRLPOOL!!!!

    AUTO-FILL=MAJOR DESIGN FLAW

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was leery about the "auto" water level, but decided to buy because of large capacity and EnergyStar rating. HUGE mistake! I have contacted Whirlpool, had a repair man come, and now will be contacting EnergyStar. First, the smallest load fills to about 1/3 of the big 4.0cf tub. I tested this w/ my daughter's small nylon windpants. Repairman said 1/3 tub is the smallest setting. If you have a small load, you'll being using a good 8-10 gals too much for both wash and rinse cycles. Second, it fails on the other end, too. I filled it with an XL load, even over-stuffed, and it only filled to 1/2 a tub. Tried this many times. I had to dig through clothes to find the water level. There's no way clothes can get clean like this. For those who said clothes came out "fresh and clean" - first, the "fresh" is the smell of your detergent; second, just see how "clean" the clothes are after a few washings! Third, repairman confirmed that ANY time you open the lid - even if it's just to check if you used enough soap, peek at water level, etc - it will automatically fill all the way to top. This is good when you want a full tub (to override the previous flaw), but another huge waste of water if you just have 1/2 load...and there's no way to override it. Take note, Whirlpool: the consumer needs to be able to control the water level!

It is a great washer for the price. There is one feature I could live without and that's the load sensor. But now that I'm used to it, it's not so bad. I'm really happy with the purchase I made. I would recommend this machine.

Haven't had a single negative issue with this washer since we bought it! We previously had a front loading H.E. washer and it was a nightmare. After three years of it ruining everything we washed with the foul odor that those machines develop, we went looking for a standard top loader with an agitator so our clothes would get clean. This machine has done that without a hitch. Plus a load takes half the time to wash and everything comes out clean and smelling great. The additional bonus is being able to wash as many loads as we want without having to spend money on "tub cleaning" products to eliminate the nasty odor that a H.E. machine will generate.

    Whirlpool 4.0 cu.ft. 32-cycle washer

I recently purchased this washer mainly for the large capacity. I can wash my blankets in the tub. I liked the idea of the automatic sensor, however I did not know that by opening the lid for any reason it would fill to capacity. One time I heard the machine struggling and I opened it to find it did not fill with enough water.

    Great Washer!!

This is a wonderful washing machine. First off I want to say to the other people... READ the manual. It explains how it fills and you say wasting, but did you know your old machine used 60% more water than this one?! I have 2 of these units one in my cabin and one at home and both work flawlessly. Capacity is huge and I can wash my queen comforter without taking it to the launrymat. This is my 7th Whirlpool appliance and I have had nothing but good things to say about them!

I purchased this washer in March of 2010, and it never has worked properly. On the spin cycle the washer shakes violently. I have to hold it down to keep it from banging up against the wall. It is terrible. The contract service company for Whirlpool has come to look at it several times, replaced everything that can be replaced in the washing machine, and the washer continues to shake violently when in spin cycle. Whirlpool states they cannot (will not) do anything about it, but asked if I wanted to schedule another service call with the service company. Anyway, I won't be purchasing another Whirlpool product. It's been a good washer

Wife and I bought this after our last washer died. It's been nice to have. Our last washer was really loud compared to this one. We sometimes forget we have clothes to change it's that quiet. It seems people have given it poor reviews just got a bad one and never really got a chance to use it. We've had ours for about 5 months now, and we've had no problems with it. We would have liked a front load, but they were a little out of our price range, but we also wanted to get something that would last, so we settled on a good name in the washer/dryer business.

DO NOT BUY WORST WASHER EVER!!!

I purchaced this washer and had it delivered. I choose for the brand and features. The day the washer was delivered and hooked it only run for one half cycle then did not run again. Best Buy came out next day and checked it and said it was dead. They did not know why. I had Best Buy haul it away and I choose a different model. I was very disappointed with Whirlpool. The reason I did not get another washer is why? If it broke half way through a cycle being brand new who knows if it would work a week, month from now. I am very disappointed and chose a Magtag instead. DO NOT BUY I wish I could give it no stars at all.

    Nice, capable washing machine

I have two very young kids so we don't have a lot of delicate fabrics and such to worry about. We were more concerned about 1) how well it cleans stains and 2) Energy efficiency improvements are a bonus. I bought this model because it was the cheapest energy star rated washing machine that qualified for the stimulus rebate. I've used it for about five loads so far and have had zero problems whatsoever. I haven't noticed a discernible difference in the ability to clean stains vs. my '88 washing machine but it does at least as good of a job.

    Worst Washer Ever

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The first time I used my washer I started it and went outside to do something and it was so loud I could hear it going outside! With every load of laundry that comes out of it the clothes are covered with lint. I have never had that problem with any other washers. I wish I could find out why that is happening. It is ruining our clothes. I do NOT like the washer and wish Best Buy would take it back!
