I had low expectations going into this movie. I thought it was going to be a somewhat goofy comedy based on the trailers. But I was pleasantly surprised. It's a really good story!

Tina Fey Shines in this Oddly Paced Dramedy

Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have carved out something of a niche for themselves by making high-brow, star-centric, concept dramedies that one can't help but to be interested in if over a certain age. With Crazy Stupid Love being something of a breakout after their underrated 2009 debut in I Love You Phillip Morris the co-directors collaborated on writing and directing the stylish if not overly convoluted Will Smith caper last winter in Focus and have now moved on to collaborate with Tina Fey and long time writing partner Robert Carlock for this adaptation of newspaper reporter Kim Barker's memoir, "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan". While I haven't read Barker's book this is one of the few stories I almost feel compelled to go back and read after having seen the movie version. Typically, I like to read any type of source material prior to seeing a film adaptation due simply to knowing where the idea for the film came from and what/why certain changes might have been made to better adapt the material to a different art form, but Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (why they didn't keep the more engaging title of the book for the movie is something of a mystery, especially given I don't recall there being a title card in the film) is something of an aberration in the sense that the film itself is not necessarily what we might expect from a seeming comedy, that somehow was able to get away with an R-rating, and stars one of the more agreeable celebrities of our time. Fey is someone even the most cynical among us can't seem to dislike and so to pair her with directors who have somehow managed to secure solid budgets on thoughtful, adult fare such as this is inspiring and thankfully, worth the endeavor as the resulting product is a well-constructed, nicely measured bit of insight into a set of circumstances not many can identify with making this inside look and the general proceedings all the more engaging and interesting.

I never heard about or saw a trailer for this film. I like Tina Fey and her work in other films. When I read the cover while shopping at Best Buy, I read that this was a comedy "Tina Fey will make you laugh until it hurts".
I didn't laugh very much. This seemed more of a serious movie with a few light hearted funny moments. Overall, this is a great film and I'm happy I bought it. Date Night was funnier

Journalists are truly brave

We forget that journalists venture into these hot spots without weapons to protect themselves. They rely very heavily on their military escorts. They do a lot of sleeping around when they are abroad. I just want to say "Thank you for risking your lives to report the sanctioned news globally."

Good movie about the lives of war correspondents.
What they are investigating.
What they may go through emotionally and physically.
Why they do it.
The inner workings as portrayed by Hollywood. All the intrigue and reality anyone could handle. Also all the fun in between assignments.

TIna Fey plays a journalist who travels to Afghanistan and learns some life lessons in her time there. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie as the trailer didn't do much for me. There are some funny moments but this is more of a drama than comedy.

I find this movie does a good job looking at many aspects of life in a serious place, but without getting too depressed watching it. It's a look at the culture in Afghanistan and the war and the issues surrounding the foreign people involved in it.

The film clearly depicts the conflict between career choices and life choices [that change with age]. The acting was superb. The conditions in battle zones are vividly portrayed. The film was an instructive and enjoyable experience.

It starts out with the main character (Tina Fey) getting tired of her newspaper job and she is going through a breakup at the same time. She deciders to go to Iraq for 6 month's and becomes enamored with the people and their culture.

It's nice to see a movie about something 'real'. You are the voyeur in a setting foreign to most and the social fabric that is developed because of their surroundings. Events, experiences can certainly change a person. This was a crafted look into people in impossible situations, doing a job few really understand in full or appreciate. They did it with humor, grit and came out on the other side with all the scars to prove it with varying degrees of grace. Very good addition to my collection

Interesting story line about a female journalist covering the war in Afghanistan. If the coarse language offends you don't watch it but it helps define the characters and how they deal with their circumstance.

This movie is a lot better than I was expecting. Tina Fey is charming, witty and fun to watch. There is a lot of messages here, but they are subtle and do not detract from the enjoyment and humor of the movie.

I don't often watch the extra features, but for this movie, it proved to be worth my time. The movie has entertainment value on its own, and with the added features that show how it is based on true experiences, it proves to be a winner. By way of example, shortly after watching this movie & features I saw a news story from a current conflict area. It was interesting to see the added insight I had into that news report.

I think this was a very good movie. Not necessarily the comedy we are used to with Tina Fey, but it was a very good story. I enjoyed it very much and I would recommend it to my friends.
