This is a game that will give you dozens upon dozens of hours of gameplay. This is also a remake of the first yakuza game and fixes a lot of the problems of the original such as fast loading time, better graphics, better collision detection and a far better fighting system. This or Yakuza Zero are great starting points for people new to the series.

Yakuza Kiwami makes great strides in updating the classic original Yakuza game to modern standards. But while it adds better combat, bizarrely charming side quests, and a gorgeous graphical revamp, it also ignores some of the original’s biggest problems in pacing and storytelling. And because of its relatively short length, Yakuza Kiwami’s fun trip through the tangled web of Japan’s criminal underground feels like a prelude to something bigger and better to come.

The steelbook is very impressive. The video game itself is solid, but does get repetitive.

I played the original back on PS2 quite a few years ago now. When I heard they were remaking the game, I was pretty stoked. I can say that at a price point half of that of normal PS4 games, with more content than the original had, with updated graphics, this is definitely worth the money. The only thing holding it back in my opinion is the combat, though that's never why I play the Yakuza games anyway.

I remember playing the original game back on the PS2 and I am so happy with how this remake turned out. Honestly the only con I can think about is that there is no option to turn on original bad english dub from the original... that's really it. Everything else is incredibly better.

I can't say enough good things about this series. Kiwami is a remake of the original Yakuza 1 game (originally out on the PS2). This is an actual remake not a remaster. Everything has been remade from the ground up, new graphics and updated game mechanics. You can definitely start with this game as it is a remake of the first released Yakuza game. There is a prequel that was made and released recently, Yakuza 0, and I definitely recommend playing it, but it is not required and it's story does not directly tie into this game.
If you do like this game and want to continue with the series here's a breakdown (listed in terms of series continuity not release date):
-Yakuza 0 (PS4, the prequel to the series)
-Yakuza Kiwami (PS4, the Yakuza 1 remake)
-Yakuza 2 (only available on PS2, but recently announced they're making Yakuza Kiwami 2 which like this game will be a total remake of the second game for PS4, no US release date announced yet though)
-Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, and Yakuza 5 (these are all PS3 games, note Yakuza 5 was only given a digital release in the US, no physical copies)
-Yakuza 6 (last game in the series coming to the US sometime next year)
-Yakuza: Dead Souls (PS3 only, technically this takes place sometime after Yakuza 4, but this is a zombie apocalypse game so it's not part of the official series canon and is just for fun, unlike all the other games this is a shooter and the controls can be a bit frustrating at times, you can safely skip this one if you wish, but worth a play if you like Yakuza's goofy humor)

This a remake of the first game. If you missed out on the PS2 original this is a great place to start. It great as a sequel if you started with Yakuza Zero. It's same as the original with updated graphics and the combat of the modern games. Definitely worth checking out!

Happened to get the SteelBook Edition after Christmas for only $12 with the gaming subscription at Best Buy, which made it an unbeatable deal. This game has plenty to keep you entertained and makes for a great gift if you've played it before, like I have.

This game is very good but i recommend playing Yakuza 0 first to give you context. This is still a good game but 0 is the better entry into the series despite this one being much cheaper i would say to buy Yakuza 0 first to get the best experience.

I was pretty bummed when Yakuza 5 didn't get a physical release in North America as this is my favorite game series. It seems to have done well regardless and we got physical releases for Zero and Kiwami and 6 is finally confirmed for the west! If you haven't gotten into this series yet, but have been interested now is the perfect time to get on board. Zero is a prequel and Kiwami is the first game remastered. These games are a lot of fun, great combat similar to the Virtua Fighter series and an outrageously fun story to get hooked on. Can't recommend highly enough.

I just happened to read an article in a gaming magazine about this series the day before I wandered into my local Best Buy and found this game on sale. I was familiar with the series but had never played any of the games. The price was right so I decided to give it a try. This is an HD remake of the first game that came out on the PS2, I believe. The story is entertaining, the control scheme works well. The voice acting is Japanese with English subtitles. I personally don't mind this and it didn't think it hurt my understanding of the story. The graphics are very good considering the age of the source. Not the best you're going to see but not bad. The fight action was very good and easy to get the hang of. It's definitely inspired me to get more games in the series

Going into this game I already knew how the story was going to end. Still I love Yakuza games, played them all but 6 [which comes out here 3/2018] and the zombie one. They use the same engine that was used for Yakuza 0 which is great and they added 'Majima Everywhere'. Game looks and runs great with a couple of frame hitches now and again. If you are new to Yakuza you might want to start with Yakuza 0 because it's a better game overall. This game is half crime drama and Beat-em up. So expect long dialogue sequences and button mashing. If you are a returning player than you know what to expect and are here for the great story, mountain of mini-games, and crazy antics of Majima. The "Majima Everywhere" systems has you fighting Majima as he surprises you in multiple ways. Kiryu and Majima always had some the best back and fourths through the series and this one is no different. Great game overall for returning players, has all the things we like about Yakuza. Disclaimer for newcomers, know what you are getting into. This is NOT GTA. This was the big problem when it originally came out for the PS2. Yakuza is a great series, and you should play it, just become knowledgeable about what you are buying.

This is a remake of the first Yakuza game, which can be hard to come by now. The Yakuza series is loaded with content, and this game is no different. This is a great place to start if you haven't played a Yakuza yet. I highly recommend it.

Time to go back to where it all began. If you just finished playing Yakuza 0 this may feel like a step back, but if Y0 got you invested in the series, it's way better than going back to the original PS2 release. Bring on Kiwami 2!

This is a remake done right. This is not merely a remaster where Sega tinkered around the edges, this is a full-on remake with the latest Yakuza tech that powered Yakuza 0. While it's not graphically on par w/ the most bleeding edge game graphics, it is a fantastic looking PS4 title w/ crisp visuals & a very detailed depiction of Japan & its culture. Do note, however, this is a far more challenging game than Yakuza 0, so be prepared for that. Overall, I highly recommend this title, and the steel book & low price definitely help!

Great Entry Point Into the Series

I had always wanted to get into the Yakuza series back when the third and fourth game came out in the PS3 era, but didn't really want to skip the story bits for the first few that had come out on PS2. Unfortunately since the PS2 games had gotten so expensive over the years I had just assumed it was a series I just wouldn't have the wallet to get into. Flash forward to today and I was able to pick up the complete remake of the first game for a mere $9.99. For that price I got what I would gladly have paid $60 just because of the sheer amount of content and the quality of it. For those that are looking to get this game know that it holds a riveting story full of strongly-written characters and high stakes. The main storyline keeps a very serious tone but the numerous side quests are more mixed. Occasionally there will be a serious story such as helping out a prizefighter who's being blackmailed by a bunch of thugs into losing the next match and then the next sidequest will involve getting toilet paper for a man in a park. The core gameplay of the game is a 3D brawler. You'll engage enemies in all sorts of places, especially with the Majima Everywhere system this game has, and you'll have four forms you can use to fight. In addition to all this, there is plenty more you can do in this game such as bowling, karaoke, and Pocket Racers. Overall I would greatly recommend you pick it up just know that the game is entirely in Japanese with English subtitles.

This game is a remake of the first Yakuza game, and a really good one at that. So if you loved the first Yakuza game, I totally recommend playing this! And if you've never played a Yakuza game before you'll still love it!
