Very pleased with the system. Easy to setup and review content online through App. You need to play with the IR setup a bit because it must bounce against something to really work well at night. Software UI is not great but it works.

Very bad camera system DO NOT BUY

I purchased this product as a camera system for my house. For the first 2 months the equipment was working flawlessly. One day I randomly decided to take a look at my camera and 2 of the camera locations were not working. I then got on my extension ladder and went up to the camera to find out that the connection was oxidation and burnt out. I must say I did silicone seal the connection and shrink wrapped it to prevent moisture from reaching the connections however this system failed me. I am very unsaatisfied with my purchase and to add insult to injury it is impossible to get a hold at anybody at zmodo. This product is not worth spending the money on and I would not reccomend it to anybody. If you still decide to purchase this product just remember that you have been warned.

THIS IS NOT THE FINAL PRICE

It is lower price than other sec cam. You should buy it if you are ready to pay the extra $200. Don't ever trust Zmodo. The positive feedback you read is their employees posted. Money might not be your problem, but I'm sure time is your problem if you purchase this product. Their hardware has so much problem. Especially is the hard drive. My case was I purchased this item and used it less than a month, I need to file an RMA to return the complete product to Zmodo to fix it. The problem was the device didn't turn on. After they shipped back, we found there was missing parts. We waited for another 5 days to receive the Power supply which was missing in the box. Now the hard drive doesn't work, and we have to file another RMA. Each shipping fee cost about $16. Would take about 4 weeks to return back to you and not guaranteed is fixed. Eventually, I have to spend $150 for the hard drive and fix it myself. Look at my screenshot email for what I said

It took a little while to set up but not hard to understand or overly complicated. We have recorded about 3 weeks of footage so far and it has not recorded over anything so there is a lot of storage. We like that it is stored on the cloud.

Pleasantly surprised. Cameras were a bit difficult to set up, but once we installed a monitor and got them online, we have not had any problems. Video review is a pain and not very effective, but for remote real-time viewing via the Zmodo app - this system really does the job.

After buying this unit on the "deal of the day" I hooked up the cameras hard drive etc. I spent most of the day running the lines through the garage and attic. One week later the hard drive crashed. I told the hard drive back to Best Buy . They could not exchange the unit because all my cameras where still hooked up on my house. I just wanted to exchange the hard drive. Well I had to buy another unit, wait two weeks to have it delivered then returned the unit after switching out hard drive. Three trips to Best Buy and finally have a working unit.

It's not bad so far. It's been working 24/7 for a month now with no issues. Improvements can be made with the app as it's very simple that's why I gave it 4stars will give it 5 if they improve the app and system software . For the money it's a good buy.

Highly Proprietary System / Not Secure

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Where do I begin with the problems and issues...... Cameras included in kit are not actually IP/Ethernet cameras. These cameras are model ZP-IBT15-S and do use CAT5/6 cable for hookup. But its not ethernet between the cameras and the NVR. Its using a proprietary wiring configuration and POE configuration. So you can't hook camera up to a standard POE injector and ethernet port. Cameras ONLY work when hooked into the sPOE port on the NVR. If you go out to the zmodo community site you can find a lot of discussion about this. They list the pinout for the cable and you find that its not running ethernet but a proprietary connection. Power over Ethernet requires at least 4 wires for data and 2 for the power. Zmodo only uses 2 wires for data and 2 wires for POE, so its not really power over ethernet as its not running ethernet. Zmodo dance's around this by always referring to system as sPOE (simplified POE). Not a True NVR. Most NVR's on the market support different camera's. Can use different makes/models of ONVIF compatible IP camera's . This unit can not. Uses a proprietary camera protocol and port wiring. So you have to use the camera's they give you. Requires Internet explorer and requires you to change its security settings. This was the final deal killer for me. If you have problems sooner or later tech support will walk you through installing an old/insecure activex control to access the system. And can only do that by disabling a bunch of settings in internet explorer. Nothing like installing an old, unsigned, insecure activex control. NVR is not secure. At its core its running Linux. Zmodo is a Chinese company doesn't believe it has to honor/follow GPL and release source code as required by Linux license. But that is a side issue. Bigger issue is system has things like Telnet services and other services running on the NVR. Zmodo doesn't disclose the root login passwords for the device but its available in forums on the internet. PASSWORD IS THE SAME ON ALL ZMODO NVR's. And you can't change it. Which means all Zmodo boxes are exposed to hackers because they all have the same root accounts passwords and services exposed. Doesn't matter what you change admin password to (that is different account) there still is the underlying root account hackers can use to hack the box. Do yourself a favor and find a real NVR that uses real IP camera's.

      Hello daoriginalman,

If you don’t want to use IE with the ActiveX plugin to access camera video and settings remotely, you can use the PC software Zviewer. You can download this software from our support page at http://surveillance.zmodo.com/support-software. This software will have some settings options.
It’s also important to note that when you change the security settings for ActiveX settings in IE, you are only requesting that IE prompt you when a plug-in download is available. You still control when ActiveX plug ins are downloaded.

We appreciate your feedback. You can contact us at [email protected] if you have any other concerns.

Thanks for your feedback. This system comes with 4 cameras, a 4-channel NVR, 4 cables to connect the cameras to the NVR, the needed power supply, and brackets and hardware for mounting the cameras. If you are missing any of these parts, please contact our support team at 217-903-5037 Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm central time. You will need a smartphone to setup remote viewing, a network cable to connect the NVR to your router, a monitor and VGA cable to access the NVRs' menus. These are not included, but are needed to use all of the system's features.

For the money you can't beat the picture quality during the day or, if using this system indoors and the environment is always illuminated. Nighttime or, indoors with lights off, you won't be happy! Also, the mount for the Camera is extremely cheap and, don't expect to talk with Zmoto "tech support", they don't exist! Bottom line; use only in well illuminated applications and hope you don't need "tech support".

      Hi WPW1,

There are a few things you can do to make sure the cameras will show the best nighttime image. First, make sure the cameras are angled slightly toward the ground. The IR lights need to bounce off of something to direct the light back toward the camera lens. Image if you have a flashlight parallel to the ground in an open field. You won’t be able to see where you are going. If the flashlight is angled toward the ground, you will be able to see where you are going.

Also, adding a small amount of ambient light to the room or area can make a huge difference with the night vision. A small amount of light from an outdoor porch light can help the lens create a better night vision image.
