SanDisk Flash Memory - ALWAYS My 1st Choice!!!

I've said this before, and I WILL say it many more times AGAIN(!) ... SanDisk "flash" memory devices ARE the BEST FLASH MEMORY DEVICES YOU CAN BUY! I'll probably never buy any other manufacturer's flash drive if a comparable SanDisk product is available, price NOT withstanding! I LOVE: The compact design AND the retractable USB connector! AND, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND attaching a 16 - 20" lanyard to help keep it from getting lost deep in the pockets of your backpack/messenger bag! I MISS: Not having an "access" light to know when it's actually in operation, but this does seem to be a feature that is just going to go away on most flash drives, especially as they get smaller and smaller and smaller. I bought this particular flash drive as a backup and secondary storage device for my ASUS Transformer Book T100TAF, 2-in-1 Tablet with Keyboard Docking Station (1 GB RAM & 32 GB SSD built-in, and a 32 GB Micro SD Slot). ... Unfortunately, Windows 8.1 (and Windows 10 for that matter) WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO MAKE A WINDOWS SYSTEM IMAGE BACKUP TO A FAT-32 FORMATTED FLASH STORAGE DEVICE - ONLY NTSF FORMATTED DEVICES CAN BE USED. ... So I used a 500GB "Winchester"-type portable hard disk drive to accomplish the backup. So now I have more than 58 additional gigabytes of storage for my "2-in-1" tablet! ... That's a WHOLE LOT OF music and photos and videos and documents and spreadsheets and etc., etc., etc. - Now, I'm good to go for years to come with about 90 additional gigabytes of storage (SanDisk Ultra 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive and a 32 GB Micro SD card) for my ASUS 2-in-1 Tablet! Thanks Again to SanDisk AND Best Buy for GREAT, Reliable, Compact Data Storage Devices at Incredibly LOW Prices!!!

Benchmarking this drive right out of the package may be misleading. I'd never bothered with benchmarking until about an year ago when I had some problems with a solid state drive. Since then I have played around with benchmarking various devices. When I bench marked this flash drive the results were terrible, barely better than my average 2.0 drives. At first I thought it might be defective but then I thought to check the 32GB version of this drive which I always thought was quite speedy. I'd purchased it over a year ago. So I benchmarked now and its average speeds were not real great but the interesting thing was that the first third of the drive was reading well over 120MB/sec, well above the advertised rate. The last two thirds were about as bad as my new 64GB drive. That's when I remembered the narrow 120MB/sec read spike at the very beginning of that 64GB drive. The software that comes on the drive? Then I wondered if you only get full speeds to data that's been written. That is, those parts of the drive that have been used, written to or written to and erased. To test this I filled the rest of the 32GB drive and then erased that added data. The average read speed for the entire drive was now 127.4MB/sec. I filled and erased the 64GB drive and it now reads 116.7. Not quite as good as the 32GB drive but I'm happy. I checked some of the poor reviews of this drive and see mentions of poor benchmarks. Maybe this was their problem too. I've had no problems with the 32GB drive and expect none with this one. Good drive. Got it on sale, so great price.

This drive runs unusually hot for a plastic flash drive. Even sitting without reading or writing while plugged into a USB extension cable, the USB connector gets uncomfortably hot. No other flash drive I've tried has this issue, although I understand that some metal cased ones also exhibit this behavior. The second problem is that writes are slow, painfully so for small files. I should have paid more attention to the reviews here stating this fact. After doing some research, I bought the SanDisk Extreme CZ80 64 GB flash drive as a replacement. It runs much cooler, and the write speed is 5 times as fast for large files and 20 times as fast for small files (this is with both drives formatted as NTFS). I was even able to pick it up on a Daily Deal for only $7 more than the Ultra CZ48, but even if you have to pay twice as much it's worth it in my opinion. I don't recommend the Ultra CZ48, but I highly recommend the Extreme CZ80.

Disappointing, but adequate for moderate speed writes. Tested with Ubuntu Linux 14.04.2 on Sony VGN-NW270F using default Disks utility. My computer has USB 2 ports. Benchmarking parameters:: Transfer Rate Samples = 100, Sample Size = 10 MB; Access Time Number of Samples = 100. Results:: Averages: Write = ~12 MB/s Read = ~39 MB/s Comments:: Reads were fairly constant at ~39 MB/s with insignificant fluctuation. Writes spiked sharply between 12 and 7 MB/s. Access times were constant at ~0.99 ms. Conclusions:: I have a few PNY flash drives of the same capacity, purchased recently, that benchmark about the same on read and access, but are twice as fast on write. The waveform on the PNYs are square and may contribute to the better write speeds. The SanDisk had sharp points on the top and bottom of the waveform. I'm not an engineer, but I suspect the controller in the PNY flash drive may be more modern and advanced than the one in this specific SanDisk flash drive.

Not much to say, other than it works for my needs. First, the one feature anyone these days should be checking for in flash storage is making sure it is USB 3.0 compatible. With the amount of computers, tablets, etc. utilizing a USB 3.0 connection, you'll thank yourself for having the faster transfer speed, when moving something like a few movies before a plane flight. It'll cut down the transfer time substantially from a traditional USB 2.0 flash drive. In other words, spend the couple more dollars to get the faster speed and always spring for the most storage you can comfortably afford, as opposed to what you think you may need. Its easier to have the storage there, then need it and you have run out of space. SanDisk is one of the leaders in flash storage so quality and performance have been great. I personally hold this on a lanyard for work because I deal with constant file transfers and application downloads throughout the day. Works perfectly!

The drive is fast and works as any thumb drive does and there isnt much to say good or bad. I bought the drive because of the encryption to secure files when I carry the drive and thought that since this is SanDisk it would be well thought out. The encryption , San Disk Secure Access comes on the drive and it is a simple process to set up a password. When you do this you find out that this is the light version and for the full access version you need to buy the upgrade. I am reluctant to upgrade due to the poor workings of the light version such as transferring files. When I tried to transfer several word files by dragging them from the thumb drive back to the computer I found that I could only transfer one file at a time. This was very irritating and due to the process I missed file and it wasn't until later that I realized this. In my opinion they should give you a trial version of the full program instead of the limited light version.

This is typical of flash drives, easy to use, fast, and in this case it holds lots of data (64GB). Since this is used as a backup, I don't use it often, but so far it has worked well. As far as speed, I can't tell much difference between USB 3.0 devices (which this is) and the older USB 2.0 devices, apparently because of the way I use it. This is borne out on other reviewers' tests. They say it depends on the type of usage, and I believe them. One note: The manufacturer warrants these USB 3.0 flash drives for 5 years, whereas they only warrant their USB 2.0 drives for 1 or 2 years. The difference in price was only about $5.00. So for a little more, you get a faster drive, and a much longer warranty. I suspect changing the interface to USB 3.0 is not the only improvement inside. Touching the sides after usage seems to show the 3.0 devices don't get as warm, and that always leads to longer life in electronic equipment. I'm satisfied.

The sandisk usb 3.0 is lightweight and durable. I got it on sale which was much cheaper. It is lightweight and has a attractive shade of red. File transfer rates is 2 to 3 times faster than a usb 2.0. It has a maximum read speed of 100MB/S.ec The black Sandisk USB 3.0 comparable models come with a read speed of 80 MB/sec and 100MB/ sec. This is noticeable if you are transferring a large file. You can connect a lanyard as it does not come with one. I would have purchased a red 128GB or 256GB is there was one offered but the largest is 64GB. I do have a Sandisk USB 3.0 100 MB/sec in black. The USB C models are still a bit higher in price.
