Auto reset circuit breakers help protect compatible electrical circuits from excessive current by interrupting power during an overload and automatically restoring the connection after the breaker cools. Unlike a fuse, which typically needs replacement after it blows, an automatic reset circuit breaker can reset without manual intervention. Many thermal auto reset breakers use a heat-sensitive internal element that opens the circuit as current exceeds the breaker’s operating limits. These resettable circuit protection devices are commonly used in automotive electrical systems, RV accessories, marine equipment and other low-voltage DC applications, provided the specific breaker is rated for the installation. An auto reset circuit breaker does not correct the underlying electrical problem: If an overload or short circuit remains, the breaker may repeatedly open and close as it heats and cools. That cycling is a reason to disconnect power safely and investigate the fault, rather than assume the system is operating normally. Choosing an auto reset circuit breaker starts with matching its specifications to the circuit, including the AC or DC voltage rating, amperage, interrupting capacity and trip characteristics. A 12V automotive circuit breaker, for example, should not be assumed suitable for a higher-voltage system or household AC wiring. The amperage rating must protect the wiring while accommodating normal operating current and expected startup loads; selecting a higher rating simply to prevent nuisance trips can leave conductors inadequately protected. Also consider terminal configuration, mounting requirements, operating temperature and whether the installation requires corrosion resistance, weather protection or ignition protection. For marine circuit breakers and RV circuit breakers, verify the manufacturer’s stated environmental ratings instead of relying on appearance or a general application label. Automatic reset protection is appropriate only where the equipment manufacturer permits automatic power restoration, since an unexpected restart can create a hazard with motors or moving components.
