Network cards for servers provide the connection between a server and the rest of your network, helping support file sharing, business applications, virtualization and data transfers. Also called server network interface cards, or server NICs, these adapters influence how efficiently a server can send and receive data across a local area network. Choosing the right Ethernet network card starts with matching network speed to your workloads and infrastructure. A 1 Gigabit Ethernet adapter may meet basic connectivity needs, while 10GbE, 25GbE and higher-speed server network cards can provide additional bandwidth for demanding applications, shared storage and busy virtual environments. Actual performance also depends on your network switches, cabling, storage and server configuration, so a faster NIC alone does not guarantee faster transfers. Connection type matters, too: RJ45 ports work with compatible twisted-pair Ethernet cables, while SFP+ and SFP28 ports typically use compatible optical transceivers or direct-attach copper cables. Checking switch compatibility, cable requirements and connection distance can help you choose a server Ethernet adapter that fits your setup. The best network card for your server also needs to match its hardware, operating system and management requirements. Before selecting a PCIe network card, check the available expansion slot, supported PCIe generation and lane configuration, chassis clearance and bracket height. Confirm driver support for your server operating system or hypervisor, especially if you plan to run virtual machines. A server network card, also called a network interface card or NIC, is a hardware component that connects a server to a network. It provides network interfaces used to communicate with other servers, storage systems, and connected devices.

Server network cards may have RJ45 ports for twisted-pair Ethernet cables or transceiver ports such as SFP+ and SFP28. Depending on the card, transceiver ports can accept compatible fiber-optic modules or direct-attach copper cables. The card, cable or transceiver, and network switch must support compatible connection standards.

Many server network cards connect through a PCI Express, or PCIe, slot. Some servers use dedicated networking connectors, such as OCP NIC interfaces, while others have networking built into the motherboard. Compatibility depends on the server's supported interface, firmware, operating system, and available drivers.

A multiport server network card provides two or more physical network ports on one adapter. These ports can be configured as separate network interfaces or grouped using supported technologies such as NIC teaming or link aggregation. Configuration options depend on the operating system, adapter drivers, and network switch.

PXE, or Preboot Execution Environment, lets a server obtain boot files over a network before its installed operating system starts. It is commonly used for operating system installation and deployment. Network boot requires support from the network card and server firmware, along with properly configured network services.
