Q: Can the cartridge be upgraded?
A: YES. Audio Technica recommended upgrading the stylus to the AT-VMN95ML (red). It is a simple snap in replacement but provides much better sound. It retails around $150 though. You can also get the Ortofon 2M Red Moving Magnet Cartridge for around $99 but you will have to install the cartridge which is a little more work. Personally I feel investing in higher quality speakers is a better choice as most of the noticeable sound quality is from the speakers. I just bought an extra AT-VMN95E (green) stylus as a back-up since I am happy with the sound so far. I might try the AT-VMN95ML if I decide to upgrade the stylus.
