Synopsis

The Babe
John Goodman is cast as the Sultan of Swat, whose excesses -- especially drinking -- and private demons can (in this context) be excused in view of his genuine love of baseball. The facts never get in the way of a good story for screenwriter John Fusco; we're even offered the umpteenth rehash of "Little Johnny", the largely fanciful tale of the invalid boy who promises to get well if Babe hits him a homer (as in Pride of the Yankees, the cured Johnny makes return a appearance as grownup). The most amusing fabrication is the casting of narrow James Cromwell as the Babe's orphanage mentor Brother Mathias, who in real life weighed 300 pounds. Many of the characters are composites, notably Bruce Boxleitner's Jumpin' Joe Dugan. At least Ruth's two wives--Trini Alvarado as Helen, who suffers Babe's many peccadilloes and dies under strange circumstances, and Kelly McGillis as Claire, who keeps Babe on a very short leash-are depicted with a modicum of accuracy. The baseball sequences are well handled (though there could have been less slo-mo) while Elmer Bernstein's charmingly old-fashioned musical score is right in tune with the film's approach to its subject. The Babe is rated PG; had this been the whole truth and nothing but, and R rating would probably have been in order. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Ok when I watch films I do so on a 165" movie theater screen (Recently down from 180") with full 7.1 surround sound and the Buttkicker transducer system. This is not to Boast but to give an idea of the clarity that I rate both 4k and 1080p films. 1st off regardless if you are huge into 4k or still collect Blu-ray; I will add that with today's upscaling technology and with upscaling technology on theater projectors that the difference between Blu-ray & 4k is really is minimal. I will say that going over 75" that you will likely see a difference and recommend 4k for the future proofing of your collection. I found the The film to be a great watch. I wasn't bored for a second. The picture on the other hand had something to be desired. It's a small issue. I just adjusted the upscaling a bit to dial in the resolution and was 5 star happy. However if you cant do that I give it an Honest 4 stars for the picture only. The rest is fantastic!

Buy it for the film...keep it for the special features!!! John Goodman as 'the Babe' is an average film. Hard to imagine 'Dan Conner' as the Babe, but he does ok. BUT, at least in the Blue Ray version, there are 4 short films staring Babe Ruth himself!!! They are short baseball instructional films starting Babe Ruth. So, I say 3 stars for the film, but 5+ stars for the priceless Babe Ruth shorts that are included in the BR version that I bought.

John Goodman portrays an amazing Babe Ruth, I used to watch this movie a lot younger, and have always been intrigued with Babes career. Though he lived a rated R life, and this movie is PG, it'll teach you enough to know everything there was to know about the great bambino, extras on the blu ray too! A+

Goodman and McGillis were excellent in their roles. This movie was a biographical representation of one of baseball's greatest players. His roots growing-up in an orphanage to his rise to fame and eventual retirement from the game that made him a legend.

I love good bio films. Babe Ruth's a larger than life character so to speak. I've seen this film on TV, and always wanted to own it in my personal collection. To actually get it on blu ray at a low price just made the experience even better.

An adapted story of the life of one of the biggest characters to ever play the game. Parts are good and true, but at the same time the story has to be taken with a grain of salt.

If you're a baseball fan, you gotta respect the Babe, and this film does just that. It's fun, funny, and a good depiction of the greatest ball player ever.
