    Synopsis

    The Verdict
In Sidney Lumet's powerful courtroom drama The Verdict, Paul Newman stars as Frank Galvin, an alcoholic Boston lawyer who tries to redeem his personal and professional reputation by winning a difficult medical malpractice case. Frank, down on his luck, is presented with the case of his life when he is approached by the family of a woman who has been left in a coma following an operation in a large Catholic hospital. Helped by his assistant Mickey (Jack Warden), he agrees to take the case, hoping for a fast settlement. When he visits the victim in the hospital, he becomes emotionally involved, turns down a sizable settlement offer made by the hospital, and decides to bring the case to trial despite the formidable opposition of the Church and its lawyer, Newman (James Mason). He is also assisted by his new girlfriend, Laura (Charlotte Rampling), a woman who turns out to have an unusual past. Oscar-nominated for "Best Picture" and "Best Director" (Lumet) as well as for "Best Adapted Screenplay" (David Mamet from a novel by Barry Reed), The Verdict is an outstanding, if not very legally accurate, courtroom drama; Frank's decision to try the case without telling the family of the victim of the settlement offer would probably lead to his real-life disbarment. Paul Newman and James Mason give fine, Oscar-nominated performances, and Charlotte Rampling is quite good as the deceitful Laura, who never seems to turn down a drink. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

This film is brought up in books focused on writing good stories. The flawed hero played by Newman in an Oscar nominated role shows his journey for fixing the wrongs of a botched medical procedure that was covered up by the hospital and church and his inner struggle to fix his own flaws as an ambulance chasing lawyer. Look for a young Bruce Willis in the final courtroom scene sitting in the back behind Newman.

Wow, saw this years ago and it was hailed as Paul Newman at his best. Seeing it now in today's climate, it is slow-moving and ends before anything actually happens (you think). What? it's over? but nothing reached a conclusion yet! To enjoy, you must idolize Paul Newman, coz there are lots of close-ups of him. All others can ignore this flick.

When I saw this DVD at Best Buy, it was a no-brainer. I just had to buy it. Anything with Paul Newman in it had to be great. I was not disappointed. He was terrific, as usual. The supporting cast was also very good. I would definitely recommend this movie, whether you are a Paul Newman fan or not. If not, you will fast become one.

Paul Newman gives one of his best performances in this outstanding courtroom drama. This R-rated thriller is constantly engaging and keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. The less you know about the film in advance, the better. The DVD has two discs. The first disc contains the film in a very good looking widescreen transfer. Disc two contains a bounty of supplemental features that add an added insight to the film and its production.

Paul Newman's wonderful performance of a down and out attorney, finding his conscience along the way, fighting for his client. Great movie about a man trying to find redemption the best way he knows how.

Paul Newman stars as a down on his luck lawyer who is handed a "just get the settlement" case. He instead risks going to trial, taking on an elite legal team. Paul Newman was amazing, I loved this movie!
