Wild Things [WS/P&S] [DVD] [1998]

Twists and turns abound in the thriller Wild Things. The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and looks excellent, save for a small amount of grain in the image. Otherwise, this transfer features solid colors and well-defined black levels to make for a very enjoyable viewing experience. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and is very apt for the film it supports. The directional effects aren't overly aggressive, though the film didn't require a sound mix à la Armageddon. Overall the Surround sounds are subtle and enveloping with the dialogue, effects, and music all free of any hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English and French subtitles. Columbia has included a few well-placed extra features on this disc, starting with a commentary track by director John McNaughton. The director has a lot to say about his film without many gaps of silence throughout. Three deleted scenes allow the viewer to see what ended up on the cutting-room floor, each adding a little more insight into the characters and story. Finally there is a theatrical trailer for the film and one for the sci-fi action flick Starship Troopers.

Synopsis

Wild Things
This thriller takes place in Blue Bay, Florida, where social-climbing guidance counselor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) is indifferent to teen-socialite Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards), who retaliates by accusing him of rape, an accusation that leads to his suspension by the school and a rejection from the country club. He can't afford a big attorney, so he hires shrewd Ken Bowden (Bill Murray), while Kelly's mom, Sandra Van Ryan (Theresa Russell), Sam's former lover, gets a platoon of top lawyers. Trailer-trash Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell) backs up Kelly's claim and additional plot twists and turns develop. The seldom-seen Carrie Snodgrass (Diary of a Mad Housewife) has a supporting role in this film. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi
