    Powerful, Fun, and Pretty

I got this laptop to upgrade a gaming laptop about 2 years old. There were some newer games that I noticed were started to have some frame loss, but nothing major. When this thing popped up, I thought it was a great update. I was mostly right. The Pros: 1. It's a nice looking machine. The lines are sleek, the bezel is small, and the lines are hard giving it a great modern look and feel. 2. It's light. This thing packs a lot of power in a small format. This thing is ultra thin for a gaming laptop, but it hasn't generated a ton of heat even when sitting on my lap. 3. It has a built-in Ethernet port, 3 USB-A, 2 USB-C, an HDMI, and kind of oddly, a headphone jack and SD reader. Of course, it has built in WiFi and Bluetooth as well. And they all operate well out of the box (I'll be honest, it took me a few minutes to find wired headphones). 4. The OLED screen is beautiful, as it should be. It's responsive, it has deep, true blacks, and it has a brightness level that adjusts well even in the darkest games. 5. A small thing that I really appreciate is that the power port is on the back, keeping the cord out of the way. I like to shift whether it's on the left or right and this makes it much easier to do. 6. The processor runs everything I've thrown at it even beyond gaming. I run Fusion, AutoCad, all the M365 apps, Blender, and some proprietary 3D modeling all with great response. Not quite like a full fledged workstation, but that's more memory related than it is processor related. 7. The GPU is very nice. Doing frame rate calcs it surpasses my 2 year old laptop by nearly 10%. While doesn't translate to a true 10% increase across the board, it is noticeable. It'll work great for a portable gaming machine but isn't going to replace my workstation, but I didn't expect it to do that. Just work as an option while traveling or meeting up to social play. 8. The battery is good, not great. On the balanced mode it lasts just under 6 hours. On performance mode it cuts that to less than half. The Cons: 1. Out of the box, it has quite a bit of bloatware on it that I just don't need on a gaming machine. I realize most of it comes with Windows, but it would be worth it to provide a built in "Debloat" app or something. I use Titus's but I wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally delete laptop specific software so it took a little bit longer than usual. 2. While I love the power plug being on the back, I don't like that fact that both USB-C ports are also on the back. I don't need 3 A's on the side as much as I need at least 1 C. It just seems like a poorly designed peripheral inclusion. The Mehs: 1. It comes with a ton of AI programs with the Acer name on it. I'm sure it's a front end to a major engine, but I don't really get the appeal of it. Maybe after using it longer it'll become evident, but for now it's just extraneous. It asks if you want to be productive or creative and then tailors the interface to that. I just want one engine with a history of conversations. 2. It has a cool monitoring app that lets you change the profile, monitor the temperature and usage, and gives you a breakdown of performance. It's nice, but I'm not sure it'll replace my standards. At least it's well designed and actually useful instead of just pointing you to Windows settings. 3. It's an Acer. The Predator is a great machine and Acer has definitely made some serious strides, but old school users will remember when Acer was to be avoided. This machine has definitely made me appreciate the brand more and I'm glad I took a chance on them, but I'm still waiting to see the long term reliability and durability. I don't buy new gaming laptops often as I prefer to upgrade my workstation first, but when this popped up I couldn't resist. It was a great choice and I do not regret getting it at all. It'll work great for what I need/want it to do and it works as a great traveling productivity tool for 3D imaging, animation, and modeling. If you're looking for a good upgrade, this is the machine for you. 16" screen is still portable but big enough to see and use without always needing an external monitor. Performance is right on par with what you would expect from a modern gaming machine. The weight and thickness are the things that impress me the most about this machine.

    An absolute beast!

So let’s get the basics out of the way. This Predator is too big to fit in my backpack, sounds like a jet engine when it boots up, and has a ginormous 16” OLED screen that won’t leave you wanting anything bigger for portable gaming. It also has a chin that seems to be where all the good stuff is hiding - hence why it won’t fit in my backpack. Also with that chin comes a bit of weight, and perhaps an exaggerated definition of what “thin” means these days. It’s by no means a Kate Moss lightweight notebook computer, but that’s also not what you’re buying it for. Setup was easy as always, and Acer provides dedicated Predator support as a value add. The Core Ultra 9 rips on all tasks - whether you’re playing games in Steam or running agents in Copilot. The only quirk I found, and this might just be my own hands - is that the addition of the number pad seems to have thrown off the keyboard real estate. I found myself mistyping a lot more than I have on my work laptop. The Predator Sense monitoring and configuration app gives you all the goodies at a glance, and depending on what your needs are you can adjust the power up and down to preserve battery life in a more thoughtful way than the windows setup panel.

    A Beast of a Laptop

Acer’s Predator is a beast when it comes to gaming performance. It includes a well-thought-out design, a high-quality build, and powerful components that make it comparable to desktop or console gaming. *Quality of Build* This laptop is both robust and ergonomic. The keys are large, mushy, and quiet. I am not sure what it is exactly about the design of this keyboard, but I find it incredibly easy to adapt to and use. I normally take a while to adapt to new keyboards, but I make less errors on this keyboard than on any other keyboard, even the one I use daily on my desktop. The keys are backlit with vibrant RGB the looks amazing in the dark. The log on top of the laptop’s lid also lights up. Additionally, it comes equipped with a large and highly responsive trackpad which also has mushy clicks. Overall, this laptop is very quiet when it comes to typing and clicking with a satisfying and ergonomic feel. This laptop is on the heavier and bulkier side of the spectrum. While it is great for moving around your home to use it where you please, it isn’t ideal for portability outside the home. It is doable but inconvenient, especially if you plan on gaming and also have to consider the charger, controller/mouse, and headset. That said, it does feel robust enough to handle being lugged around. Part of what makes this larger than most 16” laptops is that a portion of the back protrudes out by 1”. I surprisingly like that it is made this way as it somehow feels more stable and robust, and I particularly like that the power and HDMI ports are back there. It makes so much sense and prevents awkward cables from getting in the way. The laptop includes the following ports: -3 USB-A (1 on the left and 2 on the right) -Micro-SD port on the left -Headphone jack on the left - 2 USB-C ports on the back -HDMI port on the back -Power insert on the back *Functionality* The WQXGA display is fluid, vibrant, and sharp with vivid colors. The laptop provides smooth visuals, staying true to their advertised 240Hz refresh rate and FPS to match that. One detractor to the display is that the screen is highly reflective and any light whatsoever will cause glare problems. It looks nice but involves a lot of careful angling, especially during the daytime. This laptop is fully equipped for full gaming when plugged into ac power but does lower its capacity when running on battery. There is definitely some noticeable stuttering when gaming on battery. Most of the components in this laptop make gameplay comparable if not sometimes better than my desktop or console. For one, the wi-fi is amazing! I thought I had bad internet this whole time, but I have been pinging on average at 24, regularly surpassing all other players. Normally I am well above that with other devices, sometimes past the 100’s. One downside is that I have dealt with some poor rendering in heavier games such as Fortnite and a stretched-out look in other games. Lighter games do just fine rendering the graphics properly though. I may need to find better way to tweak the settings, so I can’t fully say this is the PC and not just user error. The fans in this laptop are incredibly strong and loud. They are quick to kick in and usually stop after a short run. They do exceptionally well at keeping the GPU and CPU at acceptable temperatures and the bottom of the laptop doesn’t get as hot as others do. It is definitely bearable to the touch. Overall, gaming is top-notch on this and all other regular computer uses exceed what I am accustomed to in speed and efficiency. *App* The laptop comes equipped with PredatorSense, a control center app for monitoring, setting changes, and an app center among other functions. It is simple yet helpful in optimizing use depending on activity. Battery Life Battery life using the laptop for basic functions is about 3 hours while using it on balance mode. It lasts about >1.5 hours if using it for gaming, also on balance mode. *Conclusion* Overall, this laptop has far surpassed my expectations. While I have some tweaks to try, it overall stands up to gameplay on console and desktop PCs. Not only is it great for gaming, it makes workflow, internet use, and everyday use better when it comes to experience and time consumption because it is equipped with next gen components. While heavy, it is beautifully designed and robust. It is definitely a great value and serves several purposes while providing portability as needed.

    Great performance to value ratio

I’ve never tried an Acer windows laptop but when I saw the Predator Helios Neo specs and features vs price ratio I had to give one a try. On unboxing I was pleased to see Acer had included a thin sleeve case. A small touch that is appreciated. I wish all manufactures included these on their premium line laptops. Acer even included one on a lower end chromebook I have. At first glance the aesthetics of the Helios Neo looked good. Feels good in the hand, nice and thin and feels solid. The power supply is your typical large brick, the noticeable difference is the cables are longer than average. This is a pro and a con. Good that you have longer cables to reach an outlet, but bad that you have more cable to wrap up and store. I’ll take the longer cables and deal with the slight inconvenience of storing. First power up, boot and windows setup was pretty typical, I was impressed at my first glance of the 2k OLED screen on the Acer splash screen. I did all of my prerequisites on a new pc, burn in, stress test, benchmarks, etc. Overall performance of the Acer Helios Neo showed numbers as I would expect from the hardware. The drive transfer rates however, were better than I expected. Many times on other brands I see lesser quality drives installed on premium laptops. In this case it appears Acer has included a nice fast drive. Some other ergonomic / aesthetic notes. When closed, the display portion of the laptop is slightly smaller than the main portion. There are no indents or cutouts of any type on the screen portion which makes it a little difficult to grab the screen to open it. My fingers just slide off the edge when trying to lift it up. I have to use my fingernail in the seam to lift the lid. A minor little annoyance, but it is something that stands out every time I open it. Also, it seems every mobile/portable device is prone to attract some smudges and fingerprints. This Acer seems to attract and hold on to my finger smudges more often and harder than other devices I’ve used. In day to day use of the Predator Helios Neo, this laptop is a nice snappy performer. Powered by the battery, even in the ‘balanced’ mode I’m getting good battery life and not noticing any lag with day to day work tasks. The fans stayed quiet in my day to day projects. Plugging it in, switching to turbo mode brings it up to another level of gaming performance. When stressed and working it, the fans will spin up and you will hear them, maybe even a little more than other laptops I’ve used. I noticed the air outlets seem to be angled up a little, so the hot air will blow ‘up’ and not heat up your desk/table or whatever you have the laptop sitting on. The keyboard on the Predator Helios Neo feels good and crisp, backlight RGB can be adjusted and gets pretty bright if you want it. The touchpad feels a little ‘cheap’ and ‘rattely’ to me. It is still usable and I don't mind using it over a mouse, but it didn't feel as premium as others I’ve used. Acer held back on the preloaded ‘bloatware’ for the most part. There are some Acer software apps preloaded for tuning the display, and mic, etc. Acer Intelligence just takes you to an app allowing you to install various AI type software packs if you choose. PredatorSense is also installed and useful for switching modes/etc. Some of the installed links just take you to the store to install other Acer software. For 3rd party, you will get nagged by at least: Mcafee, McAfee web, Dropbox, the Acer UEIP program that wants to track everything you do and send to acer, and one other nag to install something, but I forget what it was.. The OLED screen is nice and bright, crisp and clear with great colors and a pleasure to look at. The screen is more reflective than others I’ve used. Depending on your environment, reflections of yourself can be distracting and take away from the overall good quality of the screen. For ports, 3 of the 4 sides are filled with options. RJ45 network, USB A, MicroSD and 3.5mm audio/mic on the left side. 2*USB A and led status lights on the right side. Power in, HDMI, and 2 USB C on the rear. I would have liked at least one of the USB C’s on either side for convenience. I tried to charge the Predator with both USB C ports and from 2 different supplies that support 100w PD, and was unable to get the 100w charge rate. My meter only showed between 30-70w jumping around and never really settling. It would be nice to see the full 100w for ‘emergency’ charging if you forget the power brick. Sound quality is decent for a laptop. Not sure if it was the DTS audio or what, but the stereo separation was good and sounded crisp and clear. It doesn’t get real loud, but even at max it’s not distorting and still sounds good. Overall the Acer Predator Helios NEO 16s is a solid performer in the category, but it does have a few annoyances that may or may not distract from your experience. It is a great laptop but with the few items mentioned it is not quite perfect and gets 4 stars from me.

This made my games better and looks good doing it

This laptop has really upped my (casual) game! This is my second gaming laptop, replacing one a few years old and past its prime, and has been a big improvement over my previous device. The Acer Predator Neo gaming laptop is solid, relatively understated considering the target market, but capable of performance beyond what I had expected for the price point. The out of the box setup process was straightforward, as I have to say, I expected. This isn’t a review of the Windows operating system, but I have found that recent generations of the OS have made start/setup of new machines a snap. Signing into my Microsoft account allowed me to transfer settings and import subscriptions and services with little effort. This startup process made it quick and easy to get up and gaming without spending much time on configurations, sign ins and updates. The laptop included an XBOX Game Pass trial which was a welcome bonus. This provided immediate access to a large library of games and was a great way to showcase the laptop’s capability right out of the box. In terms of the physical design, I have to say that I am a fan. Although the 16 inch display is a bit larger than my previous laptop’s screen the device as a whole doesn’t feel bulky or excessively heavy. The chassis feels sturdy and has no flimsy feeling bits, ports and buttons are well spaced (crowded ports are a personal pet peeve). There are USBs on both sides, along with a collapsible opening ethernet port, micro-SD port and 3.5mm audio jack. The USB-Cs are on the back with the power port and the HDMI port. This setup works nicely for a dock or for connections to peripherals at the gaming desk while leaving the other ports easily accessible without “pulling out” the laptop. Overall, the wide selection of ports makes it easy to connect peripherals, displays and external devices like drives. This flexibility is particularly useful for managing several devices at once. The baseline look of the laptop is something that I appreciate as well. Visually, there is some of the aesthetic of a “gaming” device, without being completely over the top. It certainly incorporates some aggressive lines and gaming-styling, but avoids the excesses and flash appearance I have seen in many gaming laptops. It doesn’t have a purely utilitarian look, but I appreciate the somewhat more understated appearance as I am much more interested in what it can do, than how it looks. With the internals and excellent screen, I could easily see someone using this laptop for in-the-field photo viewing/editing or other tasks, without drawing too much attention to the look. The RGB keyboard adds a degree of flash and customization beyond the styling of the shell for those so inclined. Beyond the lighting effects, the keyboard is very functional. It has a better feel than my old laptop, and when compared to most other laptops (and even non-laptop keyboards) I have experience with. The keys have a satisfyingly clicky feel and provide a nice tactile feedback. This makes typing feel precise and is really nice when gaming when key response is very important. Compared to the more mushy, shallow keys of most of the laptops, this keyboard feels closer to a separate desktop keyboard which really contributes significantly to the laptop’s premium feel. The display is another standout feature. The screen is very bright and is comfortable to use in a variety of lighting conditions. Colors are vibrant, and games, videos and other content look sharp. I have also been impressed with the display’s uniformity. I have not noticed any color shifting, dimming or discoloration in the corners of the screen. Contrast is excellent, producing deep blacks and strong separation between light and dark areas of images. I would say that the screen more than any other aspect enhances the premium experience of the laptop. Storage in generous by modern standards for a laptop in this class. The included 1 TB SSD provides plenty of room for games, files and applications without requiring immediate upgrades or external storage solutions. Given the size of many modern games, the capacity is especially appreciated. The drive has also proven to be as zippy as one would expect, and a major improvement over older system’s HDDs. Overall performance has been outstanding. I used Minecraft to test frame rates, as it has built-in tools for this purpose. In that game, I achieved around 40 FPS using MAXIMUM settings and an extremely demanding shader pack. This was a massive improvement over my old computer that struggled to run shaders at all. Without shaders, performance was consistently around 500 FPS on MAXIMUM settings and under ideal conditions I briefly saw frame rates exceed 1,500 FPS. Beyond Minecraft, the laptop has handled every game I have tried at the highest settings while maintaining very good frame rates. There has been basically zero slow-down when running more mundane, non-gaming tasks. Not sure if this is the higher end processor or the dedicated graphics components that provide this capability. In today’s market it was looking like the 16gb of RAM that this comes with was looking “lower tier”, but I haven’t felt it has hindered the performance at all. Outside of gaming I would once again see an excellent spot for this laptop for photographers to view and edit shots away from their fixed assets, and for a wide variety of tasks that require good image quality and rapid screen response. Despite all the high-performance capability, the laptop manages heat quite well. With lots of porting for ventilation the case remains reasonably cool even during demanding gaming tasks, and never becomes uncomfortable to hold or have literally on your lap. The cooling system is also not overly noisy. While the fans are audible under a load, they never become distracting. The laptop maintains strong performance without sounding or feeling like it is struggling to cope with waste heat. Overall the slight fan noise is a more than adequate tradeoff for the effectiveness of the cooling system. Wireless internet performance has been reliable with download speeds meeting expectations on stable connections. Live online gaming has exhibited no significant lag or connectivity issues during my testing. The included ethernet port is a nice option I might take advantage of if I was a more serious gamer, or if my home wireless network becomes too cluttered. There were just a couple of items that I felt were less than outstanding, and all involve the power system. Battery life is somewhat of an issue, although this is likely due to the “performance” components and the way it is being used. When not at the gaming desk I have to be aware of the battery condition, particularly if I am actively gaming or intend to. The second related issue is with the design of the power plug connector that goes into the laptop. The plug is an angled connector that can occasionally be inconvenient to position when compared to a straight plug. Finally the power “brick” itself becomes quite hot during use, and seems to do so regardless of the intensity of the use. This does become a factor when placing and I do worry occasionally that it is too hot for certain locations or neighboring objects. None of these issues are a dealbreaker for me, but I feel there could be a way to at least slightly improve all. Overall, this laptop combines excellent gaming performance, effective cooling, low noise levels, a bright and vibrant display, strong build quality, ample storage, and a restrained design that avoids the excessive styling common in many gaming systems. The 16-inch screen provides plenty of workspace without making the device feel bulky, and the understated design gives it broader appeal than many gaming-focused alternatives. While battery life and charger ergonomics leave room for improvement, these are relatively minor issues in an otherwise excellent package. I would readily recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful yet practical gaming laptop that performs exceptionally well while remaining comfortable for both gaming and everyday use.
