Q: must we have wifi/smart phone or can this be turned off/on manually?
A: No you don’t have to have WiFi or need it connected to wifi. I have wifi, but cannot get it to connect, and the only difference is that you have to turn it on manually. One push for vacuum, three pushes for mop. No wifi connection needed.
Q: Can I use my own homemade cleaning solution as opposed to the bissel cleaning stuff?
