You do need to have a credit card to set up the account, but nothing is ever charged to it unless you purchase something using your Roku player. Caution: If anyone ever tries to tell you that you need to subscribe to a special Roku "premium" user account, or that you need to pay a fee to register your new Roku, you have contacted spammers and do not give them any information whatsoever. Don't even give them your name, or confirm anything they attempt to get from you.
