A: Convertible means you can use the same range hood for rectangular vents going up or going backwards, or circular vents going up, and finally if none of the vent options are present you can convert it to a ductless mode, and air would just circulate in the kitchen area through fan! GE Profile Hood
Love the modern look of this hood. Was slightly disappointed that it seems louder when operating than I expected.

Buy something else, this hood is terrible.
This is a terrible hood. There is only one fan (many 36 inch hoods have 2 fans). The fan is positioned far from the center, so that it really only pulls from on side. The fan is loud. One of the two lights stopped working within a month of installation. I have a service appt scheduled . . . Fingers crossed.

DO NOT ORDER GARBAGE PRODUCT GARBAGE INSTALLATION
Garbage product made worse by Best Buy's garbage installation team. They ripped the old unit off the wall and damaged it even though it was in perfect working condition. They installed the new unit poorly resulting in it constantly rattling loudly and dumping half of the exhaust fumes into the cabinet above it because they didn't seal it properly even though I asked them to make sure. Replacement unit was scheduled to be delivered/installed today. Best Buy calls me at 7:30am to tell me my appointment is cancelled because the product isn't in stock. Replacement not available until 11/21 and earliest installation date is 11/30. We can't use our stove because the hood doesn't vent properly and we have 20+ people coming over for Thanksgiving. Best Buy customer service is a joke. Best Buy's Envision installation services are a joke. This product is also a joke.
