Prepare meals conveniently with this Insignia induction cooker. Its glass surface provides uniform heat distribution for an even cook, and its easy touch controls let you pick functions, choose between 10 power levels and set a timer to complete recipes properly. This Insignia induction cooker has an automatic shut-off function for safe operation.
A: The flashing L means that the cooktop is in standby mode. It is normal for the fan to be on from the moment that your plug in the unit until several several minutes after cooking has been completed and you have touched the power icon (circle with verticle line) to turn off the unit. From standby mode, you must put induction-compatible cookware on the cooktop, touch the power icon, touch the function icon (three dots and three horizontal lines), and touch - or + to select a power level or temperature level. (Refer to the table on p. 9 of the manual; stupidly, the display lacks enough digits to show power in watts or temperature in degrees.) I would suggest putting a magnet to the bottom of your cookware. If it doesn't stick, the cookware is incompatible with induction. Even some cookware with a base containing magnetic metal might work. For example, some pots and pans don't have uniform, flat bottom surfaces, and others are composed of layers aluminum and stainless steel, with alumnimum predominating. It's crucial to check the label on the cookware. Please post to let other people know whether it was the cookware, or whether you had to exchange the unit.
Q: Can you buy any type of induction cookware for use with this cooktop?
A: Flat bottom cast iron or stainless steel pans only can be used on this induction cooktop. I suggest getting a magnet if you are unsure if your pan is stainless. If the magnet sticks to the pan it should work. The burner works by heating up the molecules in the steel.
Q: If power cord does not come with unit what type of cord would I need?
A: It comes with a 3-prong power cord. By the way, I love this little cooktop. We are remodeling our kitchen so this cooktop has become invaluable in my make-shift kitchen. I recommend this product!

A: No. It will get to above 400 degrees, but once the meat hits the pan it drops to below 250. You cannot effectively sear steak.
