The Veldt, the pioneering American alternative soul and shoegaze group formed in 1986 by identical twins Daniel Chavis and Danny Chavis in Raleigh, North Carolina, has long stood as one of the most visionary and genre-defying bands of their era. Joined by David Burris and Marvin Levi, the group quickly developed a sound that blended ethereal guitar textures with deep R&B roots, creating a style that would influence generations of artists to come. After signing with Capitol Records in 1989, The Veldt toured extensively across the United States, sharing stages with The Jesus and Mary Chain and Cocteau Twins. Ray Shulman, known for his work with Björk, The Sugarcubes and The Sundays, produced their landmark 1994 album Afrodisiac, a record now recognized as a bold fusion of shoegaze, soul and Afro-alternative rock-an album so ahead of it's time that it continues to resonate with new listeners decades later. Now, Afrodisiac is available for the first time as a deluxe 2LP vinyl edition. This brings renewed depth and warmth to the album's swirling guitars, velvet-rich vocals and hypnotic rhythms, presenting the music with a clarity that highlights just how innovative The Veldt's sound truly was. The theme song InchYou're DeadInch to the FX show What We Do in the Shadows has fostered a new appreciation for the singular talent that was Norma Tanega. And it's high time, too... Norma was discovered while singing to Catskill summer campers by producer Herb Bernstein, who brought her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. Crewe signed her to his New Voice tag, and success was instantaneous the title song to Walkin' My Cat Named Dog went to #22 on the charts. But, despite the album's folk-pop trappings, Norma Tanega was not an artist destined to stay at the top of the charts for long; her voice was unconventional, and her songs were too idiosyncratic, not sticking to typical song structure or even meter (for example, InchNo Stranger Am IInch is set to a 5/4 time signature). In fact, Tanega's songs were so unusual that she had to hire session musicians to play them on the North American tour she took to support the album instead of her erstwhile back-up band The Outsiders! Upon returning, she then embarked on a British tour that was to change her life forever; there she met Dusty Springfield, and the two embarked on an artistic and romantic relationship that prompted Tanega to move to London for five years. After the pair broke up, Tanega wound up moving to California and shifted to playing percussion in more experimental settings, following the wayward muse that makes Walkin' My Cat Named Dog such an entrancing and unique listening experience to this day. Laura Nyro's final studio album, never available on vinyl, is now for the first time released on New Land Records. Originally issued posthumously in 2001 on CD only, the album is comprised of her recordings from 1994 - 1995. This achingly beautiful set of recordings featuring a who's who of New York's finest session musicians of the time, including Bernard Purdie, Freddie Washington, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, John Tropea and many others. Remastered and cut at AIR Mastering, the recordings are given their best sonic outing to date. Pressed on 180g vinyl and housed in reverse-board sleeve, it includes insert with words from Will Lee, Randy Brecker, Bashiri Johnson and Scott Billington.
