This brand new plastic model kit features the Folland Gnat T.1 Fighter Aircraft with 2 scheme options at Level 2 in 1/48 scale by Airfix. The kit comes in vintage-style, officially licensed packaging and contains 96 detailed parts molded primarily in light gray, unless otherwise indicated. A display stand is not included, and paint and cement are required for assembly. The assembled model measures approximately 9 inches in length and 6 inches in wingspan and includes decals to design the plane in 2 different schemes. The Folland Gnat T.1 was a two-seat jet trainer developed from the lightweight Gnat fighter, introduced into RAF service in 1962 to provide advanced training for pilots transitioning to front-line fast jets. Replacing earlier trainers such as the de Havilland Vampire T.11, the T.1 offered higher performance and handling closer to operational fighters. Compact, agile, and cost-effective, it became a crucial step in the RAF’s pilot training pipeline, preparing aviators for aircraft like the Lightning and Harrier. At No. 4 Flying Training School at RAF Valley in 1973, student pilots honed high-speed handling, formation flying, aerobatics, and tactical maneuvers, developing precision and discipline essential for operational squadrons. While the Gnat T.1 itself did not see combat, its single-seat fighter counterpart served notably with the Indian Air Force during the Indo-Pakistani Wars, earning the nickname “Sabre Slayer.” The T.1 trained generations of British pilots during the Cold War until its replacement by the British Aerospace Hawk T.1 in the late 1970s. This 1:48 scale model faithfully recreates the sleek profile, red-and-white training scheme, precise detailing, accurate proportions, and authentic RAF insignia of this iconic jet, making it a striking addition for collectors of classic British aviation and Cold War-era trainers.
