Let me start by saying this actually plays an okay game of baseball. However, it definitely needs more work done for it to truly be competitive to MLB The Show. There's definitely some good things here, for one, the GUI looks good, very clean and easy to navigate. You can create a player, begin a franchise and other standard things. It works and it works well. I will say that like the pitching interface. Absolutely a dream to work with. You just use the left analog stick, pick your pitch and hold down the A button depending on how much finesse and power you want behind the pitch itself. Simple, easy, right to the point. The batting stances are pretty on point too, all of them looking good and animating smoothly. It's in the outfield that things start getting a bit wonky. The animations are jerky and at times glitchy, not to mention skipped frames are quite the thing on the Switch. The transitions in between innings can get real bad when it comes to load times and sometimes make you wonder if the game froze or not. Even the camera transitions between when you or your opponent hit a home run can at times suffer from this. Trust me, this is normal and it definitely needs work. Also new to this game is commentary. Fran Charles provides it, and it's a mixed bag. Sometimes it's on point, other times it's just there in the background and the audio quality at times feels like it was compressed or spliced from elsewhere. I feel this is definitely an area that needs further improvement. MLB can do better, and actually get a full on commentary team to provide broadcast style play-by-play in future installments I feel. Still, this game does have its charms for sure though and it nails the tense battle between pitcher and batter down to a science. I would like to see things get tweaked though, like being able to warm up a pitcher to take over the mound. I would also like to see things like players getting angry at the pitcher and bench clearing brawls resulting in players and coaches being ejected from the game too. All in all though, for 30 bucks, it's an okay game. Just bear in mind this is no MLB The Show by a nautical mile, but all in all it's enjoyable if you get down to the nitty gritty.
