  Blazing Gaming Refresh Rates

  The Samsung G60SF pushes the limits and bumps up refresh rates on gaming monitors from 360Hz to 500Hz. There are higher refresh rates for VA and TN panels at lower resolutions, but this G60SF boasts the highest OLED refresh rate as of now. Samsung continues with their QD-OLED panels and this is the latest version pushing 500Hz. In order to push that 500 FPS at 500Hz, you're going to need a beefy PC if you want to hit these frame rates in the latest games or competitive shooters or MOBAs. I paired the G60SF up with an RTX 5090 with 9800X3D CPU, and with some help from DLSS and Multi-Frame Generation 2-4x (MFG), I was able to hit 500 FPS in the games I tested. With MFGx4 however, you can likely use an RTX 5070 or better and still get great results with this game, you may also need DLSS:Quality or Performance in conjunction, which is fine and a great benefit of Nvidia 50-series cards right now. I'm no longer a competitive gamer, but I definitely noticed the increased refresh rates in games like Diablo 4 and ARC Raiders. I was able to max out FPS at 400 with just DLSS:Quality and MFGx2 in Diablo 4. You actually see more in the game as every animation is clear with no blurring or smudging, especially in motion. Name plates, damage numbers, hit point bars are also super crisp with excellent clarity in motion. In ARC Raiders, I was hitting 500Hz with MFGx4 and it made a game that was already great looking and very smooth, even smoother. This monitor does support 500Hz HDR (2560x1440p 10-bit color) over DP1.4, it also has 2x HDMI2.1 ports but they are not needed to hit 500Hz refresh. These ports also do not support HDMI e-ARC which is needed if you want to output HDMI audio from your GPU. You want to make sure to turn off Eco mode in the settings otherwise the colors look drab and brightness is low. I set it to Original or RPG gaming mode and results were good since brightness was already 50/max. Also, enable HDR in Windows and go through the calibration and make sure refresh rate is 500Hz. A few things to make note of. You may want to disable VRR in both the monitor settings and also disable FreeSync/G-Sync in your GPU settings. Why? Because OLEDs have VRR flicker when FPS hit certain breakpoints. Also, this is a high FPS monitor so the chances you actually need or notice VRR is less likely when you are cruising along at 240+FPS. In fact, with FPS this high you can just enable V-Sync and cap FPS just below your refresh rate and you're golden. Another major issue to note is that this monitor uses a MATTE screen. This is a controversial setting, especially with QD-OLED. The Matte layer in bright or daylight environments creates some light bounce between the film and the QD-OLED layer that results in a purplish hue. I notice it on my monitor but its not a deal-breaker for me since I'm usually working and not gaming during the day. The second thing is the matte screen kind of diffuses the pixel light and creates a mini-moire effect across the screen that makes it look less uniform. Glossy finishes generally make monitors, especially QD-OLED "pop" and really show off their dynamic color range. The panel looks and feels premium with a nice metal frame, solid metal stand, good looking finish and a LED ring that can be activated in the monitor settings under Infinity Core lighting. The menu joystick is a little higher than I'd like and the stick itself is kind of short, I kind of like monitors that put this on the bottom of the screen for easier access. While the bezels look nice and thin, there's a pretty large gap between the QD-OLED pixels and the edge of the monitor. The included cables are high-quality as they need to hit the rated specs and carry a 2560x1440px10bitx500Hz signal, but they are SHORT. Like maybe 5' max, so if you need longer cables either have some properly rated cables or be ready to order some. While the G60SF looks great, its not a great monitor for work or productivity. The matte screen makes text look fuzzier and less crisp, as does the QD-OLED subpixel structure. White backgrounds look pixelated and a sea of mini-green/red/blue instead of actual white. Text and fine icons also look grainier. And the 27" 1440p resolution just isn't that high compared to what you might already be using for work. Its also not great for movie watching because as mentioned, there's no eARC support for Dolby Atmos and Samsung just won't support Dolby Vision on anything choosing HDR10+ instead. Make no mistake, 2560x1440p at 500FPS with a system that can push those frame rates is a sight to behold and well worth the price of admission if you're playing games that can benefit from those high FPS. But there are some trade-offs to consider that make it less ideal for other applications beyond gaming.

  TLDR: OLED screens are game changers. Though often offered at a premium price point, the images and displays are worth it. PROS OLED Blacks 1000 nits Peak Brightness 500Hz Refresh Just enough RGB Reduced Glare w/o Looking Matte CONS Not 4k No USB-C for Power or Input No Speakers INPUTS 1 x USB-B 1 x USB-A 1 x 3.5mm Headphone 2 x HDMI (2.1) 1 x DP (1.4) GAMING QUALITY I have zero complaints about the Samsung image quality. OLED monitors are the latest and greatest monitors to hit the market. Although they often cost a premium over conventional VA and IPS LED monitors, they are totally worth it. I don't know of any apps, programs, or games that do not benefit from an OLED monitor. If your go-to games are ones like Call of Duty, Cyberpunk, Doom, etc., OLED's are your friend. Their ability to reach to complete black without crushing are musts. Anyone that has been frustrated by hard to see enemies in dimly lit scenarios will absolutely love an OLED monitor. No other technology offers the ability to reproduce such deep, dark scenes without distortion. Samsung's new "OLED Glare Free" screen is very nice. Using it back-to-back with a competitor's 27" OLED gaming monitor, the reduction in glare and reflections is quite noticeable. The best part of the new screen is that it doesn't have the traditional matte looking finish like most anti-glare screens. That is good, as you get a reduction in glare, but still get to enjoy all those beautifully saturated colors. COLOR REPRODUCTION If you are springing for an OLED monitor, it better be able to deliver the goods when it comes to color reproduction and accuracy. The new G6 delivers. I measured color accuracy with my X-Rite i1 Display Pro. Photos attached show color reproduction accuracy. The G6 is extremely accurate with colors below the limit for visual errors, aka a Delta Error less than 2. Excellent work Samsung. NEGATIVES I know built-in speakers aren't often used with gaming monitors, but I still like to have them built-in. I don't always want my headphones on when surfing or just doing work. The option to use a monitor's speakers would be a welcome addition. I wish the monitor offered provisions for USB-C, both for data and for power. The Samsung power brick is annoying, not to mention feels like it's going to break every time I have to plug in the barrel connector to the back of the monitor. I really prefer competitors' gaming monitors that take a basic 3-conductor computer power cable. FINAL THOUGHTS It's hard to find major faults with the Samsung G6. With a blistering 500Hz refresh rate, .03ms response time, and OLED black levels that are second to none, what's not to like? The silver stand and back look very nice and there is just enough RGB to satisfy those that want the feature without being over-bearing and obnoxious. If you are in the market for a new monitor, the G6 should be on your shopping list. Pricier than VA or IPS panels, but so worth it. RECOMMENDED

  This Samsung G6 OLED monitor is absolutely beautiful. I’ve owned some pretty good looking monitors but this is the most unique monitor from an aesthetic perspective. It was also wife approved which is nice! Let's talk about the most standout feature, the 500Hz refresh rate. Most monitors are 240Hz or 360Hz. This monitor is 500Hz! The motion clarity in fast paced games is uncanny. It doesn't even compare to my other monitors. It's ultra smooth! Not sure if I could go back to anything less to be honest now that I’ve experienced 500Hz. Combined with a GtG response time of .03ms, this is an absolute gaming BEAST! Color accuracy is something else I really look for in a monitor because I’m a photographer and color accuracy is paramount. This monitor is Pantone validated meaning its color accurate enough for professional work right out of the box. This is great if you are a videographer or photographer. The Quantum Dot OLED panel really enhances the gaming experience. The contrast is amazing because every pixel turns off providing true blacks which is great. This monitor also features VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 500. It can hit peaks of 1,000 nits in HDR mode making highlights like explosions and water reflections extremely realistic without washing out the shadows. One of my favorite features of this monitor is the OLED Glare-Free coating which provides a matte finish. It not only looks great, but performs extremely well. I have several windows in my game room which typically cause a nasty glare on my previous monitors. Not with this one. This solved that problem 100%. No glare. This is huge. Especially if you have windows and lights behind you. It's a complete game changer. Last but not least, this model includes the OLED Safeguard+ which is an advanced burn-in prevention technology for premium monitors in this class. It uses thermal management and static image detection to prevent burn-in. This gives you a great piece of mind as OLED panels typically have burn-in issues and it's one of the reasons I've stayed away from them in the past. Having this feature is great and takes the worry away. This is my first OLED monitor I’ve ever owned. Luckily, it has some great standout features and performs fantastic in all my FPS games. It looks beautiful, has built in burn-in safety features and doubles as my photography post processing monitor with fantastic color accuracy. If you are in the market for an OLED monitor, I would highly recommend this premium OLED monitor from Samsung. I absolutely love it!
