Q: How much is installation

A: Installation costs depends. Just physically installing in the unit in a counter top with a correctly sized hole is super easy. You just drop it in, tighten up a couple hold down fixtures, and connect the 2 hot leads wires and the ground. The big installation issues are the counter top hole size, the wiring to the unit and appropriate circuit breaker. This design has a wider range of acceptable cut out sizes than most and can fit into cut out holes from 281/8" to 291/4" wide and 195/8th to 201/2" deep. I had thought about buying a unit I could flush mount by cutting a lip in the granite, but I'm very happy with how this unit sits and looks. The big installation issue is that this unit ( and most other induction units too) needs a strong electrical connection with wiring and breaker big enough for a 45Amp, 240Volt service. I pulled No. 6 wires (thick and heavy), but No. 8 (easier to install) should also meet code. If your present installation is for a gas cook top that only needs a normal outlet with 15-20A 120V service, or even if your present cook top is an electric unit that only has 30 to 35 Amp 240V service you will need to put in new wiring and a new breaker, or call an electrician to do it for you. I spent about $100 on wires and parts, and about a day to pull the wires, put in junction boxes and a new breaker, but I'm pretty inexpensive on my own projects. I'd guess an electrician would need to get a permit, and would have taken a day to do my job. My guess is that it might have cost about the same as the cook top. But, just listen to my sweetheart - that cook top is wonderful! So easy to clean, to control and use, and so blazing fast to heat. Made me a hero!

Q: what does it take to wire this unit up?

A: Induction units like this need a stronger power supply than most other stove top types. This model needs a minimum 40Amp supply, so you'll need at least number 8 wires (two leads plus ground -8/2 with g) from your breaker panel to the unit, and at least a 40 Amp breaker. I pulled 6/2 wg 50A for mine, but I'm an engineer and we often overdo things...

Q: Can the trim be removed? I would like to flush mount it.

A: No...the trim appears to be attached with a custom seal probably to isolate the glass/ceramic expansion from the trip expansion and to provide a positive connection of the glass/ceramic to the unit, itself. There's also a pan underneath that interfaces with the trim, and the trim is actually much wider underneath than you'd think . It essentially looks like it's the primary structural frame for the whole unit that the top, bottom pan and all internals are screwed/attached to. On top, it looks like a thin bezel, which is good. The thing looks great, though, even with the trim. I prefer a flush mount, as well, but this unit is positively gorgeous despite the 1/4" rise caused by the stainless frame.

Q: Is the Black Stainless truly a stainless metal edge that wraps around the glass edge of the cooktop to protect it, or is it a faux stainless design etched into the glass edge?

A: The black SS edge is an integral part of the cook-top structure and supports the units weight on the counter top surface. The glass top appears to float in the trim, sealed with with looks like an RTV caulking. The unit sits about 3/8" proud of the counter top surface. It sits higher than some competitive units, but looks very good as the edge is tapered in front, and is very thin in profile on the other three sides.

Q: A feature that I liked from our current Frigidaire unit: Auto Sizing™ Pan Detection automatically senses the size of your pan to only send heat to whatever small, medium, or large pan you are using. Does this unit do this?

A: Hi JessInPhilly75, Thank you for reaching out, and we hope you are in good health. We appreciate your interest in Samsung home appliances, specifically with Samsung - 30" Induction Cooktop with WiFi and Virtual Flame™ - Stainless steel. Yes, the Induction cooking zones of this cooktop adapt automatically to the size of the bottom of the cookware up to a certain limit. However, the magnetic part of the bottom of the cookware must have a minimum diameter depending upon the size of the cooking zone. I have shared the user manual link below. Please access the link and turn to page 27 for pot and pan sizes. https://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201904/20190417163623165/NZ30K7880U_DG68-00823A-06_EN-MES-CFR.pdf Please feel free to communicate with us through the channels below if you have additional questions. 1. Q: I read that the smartphone app had no controls, and the timer was simply a timer. Can anyone confirm these (are you able to shut off the cooktop from the app, or will the timer shut off the burners)?

A: I miss read when I took the plunge. The key word is "monitoring" that is used in the description for it's wifi capabilities of this induction cooktop. The timer doesn't shut off any of the burners. I hope they come up with an app that can control the timer where it can shut off the individual burners. However if you purchase a matching Samsun wifi range hood, that can be "controlled" and shut off remotely.

Q: Does the cooktop come with the special smart knob.

A: Yes - but it is pretty useless. Easier to just use your finger.

Q: Is it easy to keep clean?

A: Yes, it’s very easy to clean because the surface isn’t hot like an electric cooktop. Everything just wipes right off.

    On the fence.

I love its steady temperature--I had a big pot of lentil soup that I cooked on low overnight and there was no scorching! The glass surface is easy to clean and doesn't burn on food like my previous glass cooktop seemed to do. It is easily scratched, though. I've cooked on it only a few times (installed late August) and it has scratches ( see picture). There's a 'burn in' time where it gives off a weird smell, like a moldy sponge and melting electrical wire. I was assured this is normal for new cooktops. The circlular dials for setting temps are difficult to master, and are affected by any touch, such as wiping a spill. The super boil is amazing--rolling boil in less than 2 minutes! The big zone cooking area works great, but my smallest saucepan (2 cup, 5 inch diameter) is not acknowledged by the sensors, so it is unusable.

    Great so far

I received compensation for this review, but the review is my own: I ordered this to replace an old Jenn Air that we had from the prior owners, one of the burners went out and we figured we'd move to induction due to the Samsung Cookware giveaway with purchase. Prior to purchasing I was reading a lot of reviews about the sensitivity to the cooktop and how the burner turns off with moisture, etc. In my testing, I have been unable to replicate this issue and in fact, the other day I was boiling water for pasta and dropped some water on the cooktop and it didn't turn off and I was able to wipe it and continue cooking. I'm not used to having the biggest burner in the middle of the cooktop but I will get used to that with some time. Things I love?I love that it has a built in timer, a pause button which is great for needing to walk away and the rapid boil and ability to not have the entire cooktop hot since it's only heating with the connection of the induction. Things I hated? Nothing really, the only thing I'd note is the analog magnetic is annoying and unreliable and I much prefer to use my fingers, so I keep it on the fridge in the event I'll ever wanna try it again.

Touch “pad” gets in the way.

I’ve had this unit for almost a year now. The features on this piece are a great, the flex zone, the power boost, and melt mode. But if anybody is like me, you tend to make a little bit of a mess when you’re cooking, or a lot. For example if you’re boiling something and you pick up the lid to check and any condensation runs down off of the lid and drips onto the touch pad, it can activate a touch button or two or more, and then unit will shut itself off. It treats the liquid across the buttons as a fault and automatically shuts off the burners. So if you’re cooking more than one thing at varying temperatures, for example, you have to know where you left off because it just cleared all the settings you had. And if it doesn’t shut off, the water droplets can actually change the sitting on the keypad. So if you have it set at seven for example, and you pick up the lid and it drips onto the keypad somewhere, picking up the temperature or lower the temperature so changing from 7 to 12 or 4. I called Samsung to treat this as a warranty issue. They sent somebody out and replaced the board. It does the exact same thing. The technician took a video and send it to Samsung and said that’s just the way it works. I can re-create this problem anytime and every time. It is very frustrating to be in the middle of cooking and because you dropped condensation across the keypad it can completely shuts everything off. It seems to be almost too smart for Its own good and there’s no fix for it. Also the timer on the front is almost useless. The volume is so low you don’t even know when it went off. The picture attached is the air code that you would get during a “multi-button touch fault”. Also, the “Child lock” feature can be overridden by same method. If you lock the buttons, just put a few drops of water on the touchpad and viola, the “Safety” lock has been turned off. Again, i showed the tech representing Samsung, “nothing they can do about it”. I can trigger this fault by fluid on the pad, a finger that touches more than one button at a time, a metal utensil/object across multiple buttons. I trigger the fault everyone I clean it. It is way too sensitive for my liking. In the middle of Thanksgiving, multiple burners going, and to check my smashed-taters, condensation drips on the pad and shuts off the gravy on one burner, the green beans on another and the simmering honey butter. To turn the stove back on, you have to completely clean the touchpad. No other button will work if faulted. Whole lotta fancy for something like this to get by QC. Not cool Samsung.
