Beautiful display for artwork, OK for general use

There's a lot to like about TCL's new Designer Series. The display is beautiful, with a fantastic matte finish that helps to bring artwork to life, the resolution is great and if you want your TV to double as an artwork display when you're not watching anything else on it, you'd be hard-pressed to get more bang for your buck. The TV came well-packed to secure it from damage, even though it had a hole punched in the box and it was delivered upside down, the panel suffered no damage and everything inside was perfect. I'm honestly sort of impressed at the engineering that must have gone into that. The TV comes with it's own flush-mount (it is not compatible with any VESA standard), which I have not used, opting to use the included foot stands. There are two different height options for the stands, but they're only about an inch of difference, which is fairly insignificant and begs the question as to why they bothered. There's a solid array of inputs and signal features, including ARC. Google's TV interface is fine, if a bit cluttered, and offers a variety of customization options for arranging your most used functions in a way that makes them more easily accessible. AI-generated artwork is controversial, and if you're vehemently opposed, you're probably not considering this model because of it. There are a variety of presets featuring pictures of historic works as well as the ability to use your own photos and images, but no way to disable the AI stuff, so it's pretty much in your face every time you enter the customization area. Anti-AI folks would appreciate a way to flat-out disable this so they don't have to look at it, I'm sure. When artwork is being displayed, it looks fantastic, and I can hardly imagine a better TV to serve that function. That being said, if you're a bit of a cinephile and want the best picture for movies, gaming, or anything with fast-paced action, you'll be disappointed with what you get. The VA panel has a high refresh rate to be sure, but suffers from the same sort of ghosting that all VA panels do. For lighting, the TV panel is side-lit, meaning no local dimming features. The side angles are better than expected for VA, but they still wash out when viewed at more extreme angles. While magnetic border panels exist, TCL doesn't appear to make or sell these themselves, and third party ones are couple hundred at cheapest, which feels a bit ridiculous for simple, painted extrusions. It'd be nice to see TCL selling a few different budget-priced color options for frames. Overall, while it's not the best TV out there for fast-action things like games, it's still perfectly serviceable for general use and great at it's primary feature, being a beautiful artwork display, and if that's an important thing for you, I think you'll have a hard time finding something that does it better at this price.

    Great picture quality but…

My journey with this TV has been a bit mixed. I got this through best buy but the manufacturer had to ship it. During the shipping, it ended up getting damaged . The screen was cracked in multiple places and there was a dent at the top where clearly the box had been dropped. This is not a TCL problem, more a shipping and FedEx problem so buying your tv is store should not result in the same outcome. Customer service at TCL handled my complaint quickly and a new tv was sent unharmed this time by FedEx. On to the TV. It is super lightweight and thin, and thus very fragile. There are tape strips for edge protection I think, that is also connected to the TV screen, and when pulling it off, it’s very sticky and it pulls on the pixels similar to pressing your finger against an lcd screen. I don’t think it’s good for the screen to be pulled on hard enough that it alters pixels and highly recommend TCL uses a tape more like painters tape that comes off easier. Minor annoyance but also potentially damaging and considering I got a broken one first, I was concerned. It’s very easy to hang, comes with a bracket and legs if you don’t want to hang it, but you should absolutely hang it because it’s a picture frame TV. You do need someone to lift with you, it’s light but fragile and large. The beige picture frame magnetic edges make it disappear into the wall. We may change the frame depending on how we decorate the room and I like the option to do so. The Google tv platform is very similar to an Amazon fire stick except that Google and Comcast do not get along with each other so my Comcast Xfinity app is not available and my MASN orioles app is also not available. This is a bit annoying so we’ve attached a fire stick to compliment the Google TV platform. Using my Google account I was able to easily add some vacation photos as screensavers to relive my past vacation memories, see pictures attached to see brightness and clarity of the TV. Set up was very easy, just follow the on screen directions and update the software. One additional concern, was my Internet connection. While watching football my Internet connection got disconnected every 15 mins or so. Not other products lost service and this has not been an ongoing thing so I am not sure what was going on, but only the tv was disconnecting. Overall, the 4 stars reflects the outstanding picture quality, good customer service, the look of the tv on the wall with the frame, minus the annoyances of lack of apps on the Google platform, the initial broken tv, concerns about fragility removing tape, and the internet issues. I think this is a good tv that I can recommend as a good buy, and hopefully your initial experience goes a little smoother than mine.

Love the incredible image quality and matte screen

The TCL 65" A300L Designer Series Smart TV is both an incredible TV and a great way to add large-format art to your walls. The TV sits perfectly flat against the wall with the included flush mount, and the included magnetic light-woodgrain frame provides a clean and understated look. Not content to be just an art frame, the QLED panel does an excellent job with high dynamic range content, handles Dolby Vision like a champ and looks incredible with high refresh-rate video game content. While not an OLED panel, blacks look incredibly black. Of course, the TV comes with motion smoothing turned on by default, but the settings to amend that are both simple and actually quite robust, allowing users to set motion smoothing to high, medium or low, which is almost tolerable for content shot on digital video, if not for cinema. Other than the excellent display, the star of the show is the matte finish on the screen. It does an incredible job of diffusing all but the brightest ambient lighting and makes the TV a joy to watch in any room. As you might expect, sound from the built in speakers is quite bad. I can only truly recommend to someone who has an external amplifier or powered speakers. I am using an Onkyo stereo receiver to connect to and control the TV with a single HDMI cable with e-ARC. It worked flawlessly the first time I set it up. When the A300L is displaying art from the built-in TCL app, it excels at matching the image quality and "flat" feeling you get with the much more expensive Samsung "The Frame" TVs. The TCL app is quite robust and offers a lot of excellent museum-quality scans of fine art, alongside photography and more modern animated versions of classic pieces from artists as disparate as Van Gogh and Piet Mondrian. There's definitely enough good art here to satisfy most folks' need for something to display, and the app also allows users to add their own files from a phone via the TCL Home app or a local USB stick plugged into the back of the TV. The first time I tried this from my phone, I was only able to upload one photo, and the app glitched, but I tried again a day later with better results. The one downfall of uploading your own art is that you must match the TV's aspect ratio, or it displays black bars on the sides of your image. TCL should change this. At a minimum, they should issue a software update that simply populates what are now black bars with a blurry version of the image set to cover the full background. Ideally, they would allow the user to select whether and how they want the image to fill the screen. The Google TV software used as the TV's operating system also contains a full-screen screensaver pre-populated with masterpieces, which also includes AI art for those tasteless technophiles that would choose to display it. However, the Google software doesn't take advantage of the TV's ability to look like a painting, and the displayed art looks like (for lack of a better term) art displayed on a backlit computer screen. Other than the somewhat baffling inclusion of a second screensaver, the Google software is generally excellent. Navigating menus feels snappy and responsive; recommendations for media to watch from apps I already use is excellent, and YouTube integration is also great. Casting music from my Pixel 10 Pro XL to the TV works better than any other solution I've tried, including the built-in Chromecast functionality of my A/V receiver. I did have two small but significant troubles during the installation and setup processes. First, the paper guide that can be mounted on the wall to indicate where the low-profile mounting plates should be installed is too wide for this set, and the installation instructions make only one tiny mention of that fact in 4-point type, without any visual guide. When it came to mounting the plates perfectly level and centered on my wall, I measured and balanced the guide multiple times and drilled once, only to find that the mounts were spaced too wide, leaving me to do everything over again. Learn from my mistakes! The other bothersome bit came when setting up the TV with my Google Account. The process requires users to accept some pretty overwhelming privacy settings and directs them to make any changes they'd like on a different device. Come on, Google. Let's make it simpler to turn off ad tracking during setup. All-in-all, I am quite pleased with this TV. It looks great on the wall, offers incredible image quality and even makes a pretty great art frame whenever you want to display a beautiful static image.

    Great Picture Resolution and Adjustability

We needed a TV with a great deal of picture adjustability because my wife’s vision is limited now due to retinal damage from a medication she was taking. Dark scenes on our previous TV were basically a waste of time because she couldn’t see what was happening. This set has completely changed that for her. With the adjustable brightness, Gamma, color saturation, and other picture controls, we’ve been able to bring those dark scenes out enough that they’re still dark and look natural, but we can actually see what’s going on without washing out the brilliant colors in the brighter areas. It also has Google TV built in, so once I get all of our channels and apps set up on the TV, I won’t need our other streaming devices anymore. For now, though, I have everything hooked up. LOL. The onboard speakers actually sound great. However, because of our setup on an angled table, the rear-firing speakers just didn’t work as well for us as the speakers on our previous TVs. We simply connected the optical-fiber soundbar we already had, and now everything is perfect. There are also sound settings on the TV for different setups, such as wall-mounted or tabletop, which is a nice touch. ### My Disappointments **1. The TV is white.** That has taken some getting used to. It is growing on us, though. The included woodgrain trim is also a very light woodgrain, and from a distance, at least to my eyes, it really doesn’t look much different from white. **2. It is not a standard VESA mounting setup.** This is probably my biggest complaint. The majority of stands and wall mounts that you may already own—or can easily buy off the shelf—won’t work without additional adapters or a specialized stand, assuming you can find one that fits. The TV does come with its own wall mount, and it looks great if flat wall mounting is what you want. It also includes two rather sturdy, well-designed feet that do a good job of balancing the TV for tabletop use. We decided to try the included feet before buying another wall mount, adapter, or swivel tabletop stand. So far, they’re actually working out very well, and we may just stick with them. Setup was easy, and the remote is very straightforward to figure out and use. Switching between inputs is also a breeze when needed. As for the built-in art library, that’s not really a feature we consider important, although we may explore it at some point. ### Overall All in all, we are very pleased with this TV. The picture adjustability in particular has made a **huge difference for us**, and that alone makes this set a winner in our household. I would have given it **5 stars** if it used a standard VESA mounting system. That’s really the only significant drawback we’ve found so far.

    Lots of style, less substance

This is the first TCL TV I’ve tried, and it’s pretty good! There are a few issues that they could easily deal with that drag this unit down more than it deserves. First things first, this is not an OLED TV, it’s QLED, which is still the older style LED backlight, but there is a filter layer added in addition to the very bright backlighting that makes colors look more saturated, and I have to say it’s really nice. I use an OLED for my computer and often find it to be too bright, too intense, too contrasty (yeah, I know, weird). I find watching this TV at night in the dark is more comfortable viewing than the OLED. I have to say the black is more gray here than black, and it does take some liberties with colors as far as I can see. One thing that jumped out at me was how nice it makes my old low-res videos look, this TV does so much better smoothing things out. The matte display is simply wonderful when watching with lamps on or bright sun coming in the room. The reflections are still there, but are not mirror-like as in my old TV. Gaming with my Xbox Series X is amazing, I’m already hitting more stuff, as it will push past 60fps now with the FreeSync variable refresh rate up to 144Hz. I expected motion to be a bit blurry, but I found it to be sharp and responsive. No complaints here. Google TV is… well, Google TV. Good enough, I guess. I’ll never understand brands’ insistence on subsuming their own identity to online companies, but, enjoy. Download the arts, disconnect the TV from your network and use an Apple TV 4K to push video to it. You’ll get Dolby Vision, Atmos, full res, and you don't have to wonder why you had a conversation in the living room, then found all kinds of ads about that conversation later on. The TV keeps up with apps and streaming well enough, but I’m not interested in feeding the monster. There is a single physical button on the bottom left of the panel. It pokes out and can be snapped in and out to accommodate thicker frames. The button powers the TV on and off and is supposed to do other stuff, but I can’t imagine messing with it until the remote gives up. The mount is completely bespoke. As the TCL website’s specifications page states, there are no VESA standard holes on the back. Mounting it on an existing (VESA) wall mount can be challenging, and it’s not supported per TCL. I had planned initially to mount the TV flush like it is designed to do with the included mount. The wall behind turned out to be brick, so I used my existing arm mount for now. Since there are not VESA holes, I was only able to use the top holes, leaving the lower part of the mount free. This works as long as the panel is completely vertical. I’ll be adding a crossbar to secure the lower section against the OEM stand mount screw holes at the bottom. The remote control is very disappointing. It seems TCL is interested in people using the “smart” features, which need the remote. It’s a cheap, lightweight rattly plastic thing that is the only part of the TV a user touches all the time. The lens at the front is loose and has open edges that will eventually catch and break. While this TV has an incredible picture, the rattly remote (I’ve tried two of them) will remind folks of the value nature of this TV every time they use it. I can’t imagine this remote lasting very long with daily use. As far as the picture and basic performance, this is a good panel. It has a hardcore cost-cutting feel all around it, cheapening the experience for users. I would not recommend this TV, as there are better options in this range.
