A: It IS a freezer. That’s the beauty of this unit. It can be a refrigerator or freezer; but not both at once. You get to choose. Right now I’m using mine as a fridge because I needed the room for the holidays. During hunting season I use it as a freezer.
A: I was just told by an agent it is frost free no defrosting needed
A: No, it is not reversible.
Q: Is it possible to setup this freezer to show the current interior temperature of the freezer?
A: This is really an important question that deserves an accurate answer: On the outside door is a digital display where you enter the desired temperature. Desired temperature is not the same as the temperature of the inside unit. This is because the unit cycles on/off, which is normal, but it's important understand the desired temperature is not necessarily the temperature inside the unit. When the unit is in the refrigerator mode (not freezer mode), the absolute minimum you are permitted to set the refrigerator is 35 F degrees. The digital display (where you enter the temperature) does not permit you to enter 33F as you would hope, it only permits you to scroll down to 35F and no further. This is important to know, because most people prefer their refrigerators to run on the cooler side, rather than the warmer side. I've got my fridge set at 35F (the coolest setting allowed on the digital display) and this translates into actual temperatures inside the refrigerator between 40F and 45F inside the refrigerator, using three different refrigerator temperature readers from three different reputable companies. I wish the unit could be set to 33F, because that would just about get the unit into the safety zone of 38 to 42F. I think 45F is a bit too high for a refrigerator that costs $600. Also note, the refrigerator door was not opened for 48 hours and it still reads out temperatures between 40 and 45. (Today, it actually read 46F). I had to toss out our Easter ham, because it just doesn't keep meat in food safe zone. Other than that, the unit is amazing. It's excellent as a freezer and functions much better as a freezer, with temperatures around -11F which is amazingly good. If you are purchasing this as a freezer, I would highly recommend it is one of the best freezers out there. If you are purchasing this for fruit/vegetables or sodas, this is also an excellent choice. I just would not recommend it for meat nor cottage cheese, because those items need to be kept in a food safe temperature zone, which these refrigerators are not able to achieve. It's too bad the refrigerator mode doesn't work as needed. I own two units.
A: I keep mine in my garage on freezer mode and it does a fantastic job. I have not noticed any issues at all with cold air circulation.
A: Hi. I truly appreciate the time you took to share this inquiry with us. While the unit could work in a garage, tit is designed and manufactured to be used indoors. Thus, we cannot ensure its correct functionality while on such location. Cesar G. - Insignia Support
Q: Can this unit be used in the garage?
A: Yes, that is where we keep ours. All you need is power.
A: During the initial setup, it took about 4 to 6 hours to get it cold enough to start putting our freezer goods in there. I would say 10 to 12 hours to reach actual temp used as a freezer. The continuous running to get it to temp did cause the unit to feel warm to the touch on the exterior. Keep in mind, our unit is placed in an enclosed garage. It is not inside where the ac has the temp cooler.

So far we’re very pleased with the Insignia freezer. It works as described; we’re using it as a freezer. It’s larger in the inside than we thought, and we love having the drawer and sections on the door. You literally plug it in, wait half an hour...and your freezer is ready to go. Due to the pandemic, we’ve been stocking up on food and meals, and have made, vacuum-packed, and frozen meals for my daughter and her hubby, who just had a baby. So in addition to our back up stock, there are about 21 dinners stored in the freezer. I froze all the dinners flat, and then stacked them sideways in a file folder holder; worked great!

It is versatile. I can be used as a fridge or as a freezer. I am using it as a garage fridge. Large capacity. Low noise. Easy to setup. Working great.

Freezers are hard to get these days that are either sold-out or not within 250 miles from where I live. I had been trying to buy one for over 2 months. I kept checking and checking Bestbuy for one. The Insignia 13.8 Cu. Ft. Upright Convertible Freezer/Refrigerator finally showed up at my local Bestbuy and I was there to snatch me up a freezer finally. I like that it can be used as a freezer or refrigerator. I will be using it as a freezer...needed one to catch the overflow of frozen foods and meats after shopping. Also, in the near future, I'm going to buy a quarter cow for the freezer to use in the future...and to be prepared. What I like about this freezer. 1. Size 2. Deep Glass Shelves 3. A Decent Light 4. Freezes Quick 5. Alarm If Door Not Closed 6. Frost Free 7. Bought At A Decent Price! I've had the freezer for about a month and it freezes away with no problems. If you're looking for a good mid-size freezer...this is it.
